1. What are the different competing concepts of globalization?

Answer:
According to (Bartelson,2000), there are three concepts of globalization. First, globalization is
an intensified
transference or exchange of things between pre-constituted units, be they political, economic,
or cultural. Second,
globalization is a process of transformation that occurs at the systems level, and it affects this
system as much as it affects
the identity of the units. Third, globalization is a transcendence that brings change not only to
the identity of units and
systems but also to the conditions of existence of objects of inquiry and the fields where they
are situated.
Jeffrey Hart identified five concepts represented by globalization: 1. The existence of global
infrastructure, 2. The
global harmonization or convergence of important characteristics 3. The lack of borders 4.
The Global Diffusion of
initially localized phenomena and 5. The geographic dispersion of core skills in the highest
and most desirable activities.
These concepts form a whole in which human society develops.

Definition of Globalization
Underlying Philosophy
1. “Globalization is the expansion and intensification of
social relations and consciousness across world-time and
across world-space.”
Claudio, L.E. (2018). “The Contemporary World

Globalization:
A
Very Short
Introduction.Oxford: Oxford University Press. 3rd ed.
It has to do with people's perceptions of time and place.
Globalization processes involve not just the objective,
material plane of human consciousness, but also the
subjective plane of human consciousness. People begin to
believe that the world has shrunk in size and that thousands
of miles have been reduced to a single mouse click.
2. “Globalization means the onset of the borderless world.”
Al-Rodhan, N. R., & Stoudmann, G. (2006). Definitions of
globalization: A comprehensive overview and a proposed
definition. Program on the geopolitical implications of
globalization and transnational security, 6(1-21).
A borderless world is a globalization idea in which
commodities, services, technology, information, and capital
move freely across national borders. Components may be
manufactured in one nation, assembled in another,
marketed in a third country, and funded in a fourth country
in today's globalized world.3. “Globalization is the intensification of the worldwide
social relations which link distant localities in such a
way that local happenings are shaped by events
occurring miles away and vice versa.”
Reguyal, P.K. (2018). “The Contemporary World”
(1st ed.). Rex Bookstore,Inc.
Giddens, A. (1990). The Consequences of Modernity.
Cambridge:Polity Press. p.64
Giddens sees globalization as the motor of development
that brings varied changes, which shape modern societies. It
is a process that contains varied, often opposing,
tendencies. Globalization affects societies, firms, and the
personal lives of people in modern societies.
4. “Globalization refers to the compression of the world
and the intensification of consciousness of the world as
a whole.”
Robertson, R. (1992). Globalization: Social theory and
global culture (Vol. 16). Sage
Lechner, F. (2001). Globalization theories: world-system
theory. Department of Sociology, Emory University.
.
The emergence of capitalist modernity is preceded by
global interdependence and awareness of the globe as a
whole. It brings the globe together in both thought and
deed. What it means to live in this place and how it needs to
be organized become universal concerns. Individuals and
societies respond to these problems in a variety of ways,
defining their place in connection to a system of societies as
well as the shared attributes of humanity from a variety of
perspectives. As a result of their clashing worldviews,
globalization entails "comparative contact of different
forms of life".
5. “Globalization refers to all those processes by which
the peoples of the world are incorporated into a single
world society, global society.”
Pieterse, J. N. (2018). Globalization as hybridization (pp.
39-60). Routledge.
Globalization makes the world more uniform and
standardized, through a technological, commercial, and
cultural synchronization emanating from the West, and that
globalization is tied up with modernity.
3. How the course on contemporary would relate to globalization?
Answer:
The term contemporary world refers to the current era's circumstances and concepts, which
include difficulties
and issues relating to the environment, population, wealth, power, tensions, and conflicts
while globalization impacts the
way nations, governments, businesses, and people interact in the current era. With that being
said, the course on the
contemporary world introduces individuals to the modern world by looking at the many facets
of globalization. This is to
encourage people to become interested in modern world challenges and difficulties that all
cultures face, as well as to gain
competencies and knowledge. It studies the economic, social, political, technical, and other
shifts that have resulted in a
growing awareness of the interconnectedness of people and places around the world, using
multiple social science
disciplines. Moreover, this course gives a broad understanding of global governance,
development, and sustainability
concerns. People learn about the nature of the interactions that form between societies and
how these links impact the way
the world is organized now by examining these challenges and issues. Lastly, it aims to instill
a sense of global citizenship
and global ethical duty in the people, in addition to exposing them to the world outside the
country.References:
