Exercise 5

1. Given the population data values 4, 6, 3, 3, 1, 8, 14, 13, compute the measures of central tendency and
measures of variability. You may use Excel for ease of computation. Round off answers to 2 decimal places.
Tabulate only the results.
Standard
Mean Median Mode Range Variance CV (%)
Deviation
7.13 5 3 12 31.11 5.58 127.74

The distribution is skewed to the right based on the fact that the value of mean is larger than the value of
median(7.13>5).

2. Refer to no. 1. Construct the box-and-whisker plot of the data values using the following:
a. https://www.geogebra.org/m/gQkXhAvd (Read Additional File.)

Screenshot the result and paste it on your exercise sheet.

b. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zON-p3wanjc

Screenshot the result and paste it on your exercise sheet.

c. Compare the results of a. and b.
The result or the figure only differ on the line that divides the box. In the figure generated from the box and
whisker generator based or uses he mean value while on the figure from the excel, the Quartile 3 alue was
used to indicate the line that divides the box.

3. Given below are the number of cells observed from a sample of onion root tips in each phase of mitosis.

a. By using/exploring Excel, calculate and tabulate the following measures in the table below.

b. Which phase is the most variable? _______________________ least variable?

_________________________
c. Which phase/s is/are skewed to the left? Interphase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase are skewed to
the left because the value of their mean is less than the value of its median.
d. Which phase/s is/are skewed to the right? Prophase because it is he only phase that has its mean greater
than its median.
e. Which phase/s is/are symmetric? None of the phases are symmetric because we can only tell that the
distribution is symmetric if the value of the mean and the mean is equal.
f. Construct the box-and-whisker plot for each phase; screenshot and paste each plot in your exercise sheet.
Compare the phases using these box-and-whisker plots.
