I. (a) What are the various limit states of design for a steel structure as per IS 800:2007? 3
(b) State the types of connection and explain failure of connections 3

(c) Explain steel as structural material. State the advantages of steel as structural material 3

(d) What are the factors affecting plastic moment capacity? 3

2. (a) Determine strength due to Block Shear for the given section in figure No. 01 and comments on it. 6
Assume diameter of bolts is 16mm.

(b) Design the framed connection for a beam ISMB 350 transmitting factored reaction of 200kN to 6
flange of column ISMB 500 as shown in figure No. 02

3. (a) A single unequal angle 100 x 75 x 8 mm is connected to 12 mm thick gusset plate at the ends with 6 8
numbers of 20 mm diameter bolts to transfer tension as shown in figure No.03. Determine the
design tensile strength of the angle if the gusset is connected to the 100 mm leg. The diameter of the
bolt used is 20 mm. fy= 250 MPa, fu= 400 MPa.

4. (a)
Detennine the axial load carrying capacity of column ISMB 400 if length of column is 3m with both
ends are fixed.

A simply supported beam of span 8 m subjected to UDL of SOkN/m over the entire span. The 12

compression flange is fully restrained. The rolled steel section available is 18MB 300 and IS mm
thick plates. Check whether the section is sufficient to resist the moment. If not design a economical
built up using flange plates.
OR
(b) A simply supported beam of span Sm (effective) is laterally supported throughout. It carries 12
unifonnly distributed load of 40 kN/m. In addition the beam carries a central point load of SOkN.
Using steel of grade Fe 2S0, design the section and check for bending, shear, web buckling and
deflection also.

S. Design a built of column consists of two channels placed back to back to carry factored load of 12
1600kN, the unsupported length of column is 10.5m with column effectively held in position and
restrained against rotation at both end. Also design the suitable lacing systems. -

2. The R.C.C. overhead circular water tank has an internal diameter 7.5m and height of wall is 4.0 15
m. The base slab of tank is supported over its periphery by a circular ring beam. Using M20
concrete and Fe415 steel, design theroof slab, wall and base slab. Sketch reinforcement details.
Assume freeboard of O.3m.

1. [CO-I] Detennine the reinforcement required of a beam of b =325 mm, d = 600 mm, D = 650 mm 10
and subjected to factored Mu = 205 kN-m, factored Tu == 65 kN-m and factored Vu = 85kN.
Use M 25 and Fe 415 for the design.

2. [CO-2] A short rectangular column with overall size 300 mm X 500 mm subjected to an ultimate 10
axial load of 1410kN together with ultimate moments of 115 kN m and 85 K.N m about the
major and minor axis respectively .Adopt M-20 grade of concrete and Fe 415 (HYSD
bar),Assume (d'ID)=O.l

3. [CO-I] Design a simply supported beam of effective span 7 m subjected to imposed loads of to
35 kN/m. The beam dimensions and other data are: b = 250 mm, D ::: 550 mm, M 25concrete,
Fe 415 steel, Assume d'=50 mm. Check Minimum and Maximum tension and compression
steel.

4. [CO-5] Design a cantilever retaining wall to retain earth for a height of 4m. The backfill is horizontaL 10
The density of soil is 18kN/m3 • Safe bearing capacity of soil is 200 KN/m2 • Take the
co-efficient of friction between concrete and soil as 0.6. The angle of repose is 30°. Use M20
concrete and Fe415 steel.

5. [CO-3] Design a slab panel for a room having effective dimensions for 4.5m X 5.5 m. The slab has 15
two short edge continuous and two long edges discontinuous. The slab carries a live load of
2.5 kNl m2 and a fmishing load of 1 kNl m2 • Design the panel using M20 concrete and Fe 415
steel. Provided all the checks as per code. Sketch the reinforcement details.

6. [CO-4] Two column Cl and C2 spaced 4 m c/c apart are having size 300 mm x 300 mm and 350 mm 15
x 350 mm respectively. The column Cl carries 1050 kN axial and column C2 carries
1250 kN axial load. Design a combined footing for column if the width of footing is restricted
to 1.8 m and safe SBC of soil is 175 kN/m2• Provide all checks as per IS Code. Sketch the
reinforcement detail. Use M20 concrete and Fe 415 steel.
