Slender columns
A slender column is defined as a column that has a significant reduction in its axial-
load capacity due to moments resulting from lateral deflections of the column.
In the derivation of the ACI Code, “a significant reduction” was arbitrarily taken as
anything greater than about 5 percent.

Sway and Non-sway frames/columns
Frames a and b are prevented
against deflecting laterally. They
are said to be braced against
side sway or non-sway frames.

Frames c and d are free to sway

laterally when they buckle. They
are called un-braced or sway
frames
Sway and Non-sway frames/columns
Sources of Sway in frames
1. Lengths of different columns are unequal
2. Columns in a frame have different cross-section
3. Loads are unsymmetrical
4. Lateral loads are acting

Side Sway prevention

1. Provide shear and partition walls
2. Fixing the top of frame with adjoining rigid structure
3. Provision of properly designed lift well in a building which may act as backbone
and reduce the lateral deflections
4. Provision of lateral bracings
P- and P-∆ second order moments
P− moments result from
deflections, , of the axis of the
bent column away from the
chord joining the ends of the
column.

P−∆ moments result from lateral

deflections, ∆, of the beam–
column joints from their
original un-deflected locations,
