Functional urinary Incontinence

Definition
Inability of usually continent person to reach toilet in time to avoid unintentional loss of urine
Defining Characteristics
Completely empties bladder; early morning urinary incontinence; sensation of need to void; time
between sensation of urge and ability to reach toilet is too short; voiding prior to reaching toilet
Related Factors (r/t) Alteration in cognitive functioning; alteration in environmental factor;
impaired vision; neuromuscular impairment; psychological disorder; weakened supporting pelvic
structure

Overflow Urinary Incontinence


Definition
Involuntary loss of urine associated with overdistention of the bladder
Defining Characteristics Bladder distention; high postvoid residual volume, involuntary leakage
of small volume of urine, nocturia
Related Factors Bladder outlet obstruction; detrusor external sphincter dyssynergia; detrusor
hypocontractility; fecal impaction; severe pelvic prolapse; treatment regimen; urethral
obstruction

Reflex Urinary Incontinence


Definition
Involuntary loss of urine at somewhat predictable intervals when a specific bladder volume is
reached
Defining Characteristics
Absence of sensation of bladder fullness; absence of urge to void; absence of voiding sensation;
inability to voluntarily inhibit voiding; inability to voluntarily initiate voiding; incomplete
emptying of bladder with lesion above pontine micturition center; predictable pattern of voiding;
sensation of bladder fullness; sensation of urgency to void without voluntary inhibition of
bladder contraction
NOTE: Reflex urinary incontinence may be associated with sweating and acute elevation in
blood pressure and pulse rate in clients with spinal cord injury. Refer to the care plan for
Autonomic Dysreflexia.
