ASSESSING STUDENTS

Very Good: Between 90-100%


Good: Between 80-89%
Fair: Between 60-79%
Poor: Under 59%
SPEAKING
Fluency Very Good: Very easy to understand, both complex and simple sentences. Very effective.
Good: Most easy to understand, a few complex sentences, some hesitation but that does not
interfere much.
Fair: An effort needed to understand, a little confusing, hesitation sometimes interferes.
Poor: A lot of hesitation, cannot express ideas properly.

Pronunciation Very Good: No pronunciation and no stress mistakes.


Good: A couple of pronunciation or stress mistakes. They do not interfere with communication.
Fair: Several errors, some interfere with communication, some words are hard to recognize.
Poor: Numerous errors, several words hard to recognize, communication is very difficult.

Content Very Good: What the student says makes sense and is relevant to what is being discussed.
Good: Student says something related to the content but it is not relevant.
Fair: Student says very little in terms of content.
Poor: Student does not say anything related to the topic.

Grammar Very Good: Student masters taught grammar. Only one or two minor mistakes.
Good: A few minor mistakes (prepositions, articles, etc).
Fair: Major grammar mistakes which lead to difficulty in understanding.
Poor: Numerous serious mistakes, almost unintelligible.

Vocabulary Very Good: Use of wide range of vocabulary taught previously.


Good: Good use of new words acquired.
Fair: Restricted vocabulary, imprecise and vague, affects meaning.
Poor: Very restricted vocabulary, seriously hinders communication.

WRITING
Fluency Very Good: Very easy to understand, complex and simple sentences, very well organized.
Good: Most easy to understand, a few complex sentences, mostly organized.
Fair: Not too hard to understand, mostly simple sentences, fairly effective.
Poor: Hard to understand, cannot enjoy reading, almost all simple sentences, complex sentences
confusing, no organization and excessive use of ‘and’.

Spelling Very Good: No errors.


Good: One or two minor errors.
Fair: Several errors, some interfere with communication.
Poor: Numerous errors. Hard to recognize several words, very difficult communication.

Message Very Good: Content makes sense and is relevant to what is being discussed.
Good: Student writes a little in terms of content.
Fair: Student writes something related to the content but it is not relevant.
Poor: Student does not write anything related to the topic.

Details Very Good: Student is able to identify most relevant details.


Good: Student is able to identify some of the relevant details.
Fair: Student understands just a few details.
Poor: Student is not able to understand any of the relevant details.

READING

Homework Very Good: Student does all homework assignments well.
Good: Student does most assignments well except one or two.
Fair: Student does not do most of assignments.
Poor: Student hardly ever does homework.

Attendance Very Good: No absences.


Good: One or two absences a month.
Fair: 3 absences a month.
Poor: More than 3 absences a month.

Punctuality Very Good: Student is always punctual.


Good: Student arrives late one to two classes a month.
Fair: Student arrives late 3 classes a month.
Poor: Student arrives late more than 3 classes.

Participation Very Good: Student has a positive attitude and volunteers to activities.
Good: Student participates whenever asked to.
Fair: Student does not participate very often unless the teacher really demands his participation.
Speaks considerable amount of Portuguese.
Poor: Student refuses to participate, speaks Portuguese in classes and disturbs other students.
