All the Bright Places

By Jennifer Niven

Violet Markey is quiet but popular student in her school. Theodore Finch meanwhile is a
total freak in their school. They never would’ve met if it wasn’t because of Theodore’s guts.
They both are willing to end themselves anytime and at the same time.

Ever since her sister died in a car accident, Violet finds it hard to get back on track and love
everything as she used to be. Before, she loves people, nature, riding a car and herself. But now
is the exact opposite. As for Finch, he uses jokes and dark humors as a coping mechanism from
his suicidal thoughts. While they’re both in the midst of ending themselves, they find their way
to each other as a starting point. It is when Finch tried to get Violet off the ledge the day he is
taking a run as one of his coping mechanism. The second time was when their U.S Geography
teacher asked them to pick a partner to wander places in their hometown. They developed an
intimate relationship in between their wanderings. Everything’s wonderful when they’re
together. Finch is one of a great partner, whenever you’re going uphill or downhill. During their
outings, Finch serves as therapist to Violet and talk about the traumas she had that has never
been said and talked about. Her blogs, her sister’s death, and her adventures in a car seems to be
getting healed with Finch. However, as Violet gets better the worse Finch is. It was never easy
for him to deal with his own problems but easy to deal with Violet’s. He is undiagnosed of
bipolar disorder caused by the beatings of his father before, and the beatings of his schoolmates
now. It was all the same now and then. The only escape he have is whenever he’s wandering
with Violet and writing in sticky notes. One of the journeys in their wanderings didn’t turn out as
they wanted it to be, they accidentally fall asleep until morning. Her parents didn’t like the idea
of them being together in a late night, now, they’re forced to be apart and not to meet again. This
situation adds more to Finch’s grudge. His lows are low, hiding and sleeping in his cabinet is his
sanctuary. He’s still seeing Violet, at least, but secretly. Their secret meetings developed a
grudge on Violet too. She thinks that Finch is losing interest in her, but the truth is, Finch is
losing interest in him. In one of Finch’s episode, he tries to kill himself using a bunch of sleeping
pills. So, he ends up attending a therapy session along with one oh his bullies, Amanda Monk.
As an act of human decency, Amanda told Violet what she encountered and knew in that session.
Now Violet's worried. Eventually, she confronts Finch, and they get into a huge fight. She wants
to help, but he's not having it. Violet tries to enlist the help of her parents, but it's too late. Finch
runs away from home, but his family doesn't care. No one's looking for him except for Violet,
and Finch doesn't want to be found. Secretly, he goes to see the remaining "wanders" for his
project with Violet. He even sends her texts about it, but she won't make sense of them until after
his death.

It happens after Finch sends emails to almost everyone, he knows one morning, more than a
month after he vanishes. All of them are saying goodbye in some way. Violet is terrified and digs
through his belongings, concluding that he drowned in the Blue Hole. She goes there to
demonstrate that she is correct. It's a complete nightmare.

As it always does, life carries on. Violet deciphers Finch's mysterious notes and travels to all the
sites he visited alone in his final days. She discovers a song written for her on the final "wander."
It makes her feel less terrible about his death, which she had largely blamed on herself up until
this point.

Despite her sadness regarding Finch, Violet graduates and continues to work on her magazine.
