ASSIGNMENT (Tragic story – All the Bright Places) Dr. Gresila Alburo
Ins: Individual task to do. Please be guided on these questions:
1. Who are the lovers in the story?
- Theodore Finch and Violet Markey are two teenagers who badly want to escape from their small
Indiana town of Bartlett. Violet is a popular girl who is secretly dealing with survivor's remorse, and Finch is
a boy obsessed with death, labeled a freak by his peers

2. What are their family background or the characteristics they have?

- Violet has been dealing with the death of her sister, Eleanor, who died 9 months previously in a car
accident after Violet suggested the route home. As a result, Violet feels responsible and has not been in a
car since the accident and struggles with survivor's remorse and thinks she should have died instead of
Eleanor. As for Finch, he suffers from depression and experiences near-constant thoughts of suicide during
his so-called "Awake" periods. Finch's family does not understand his depression, making him feel isolated.
Morbidly, he writes out fun facts about other people's suicides on his computer, as well as methods of
suicide and the best way to die.
3. What forbids their love?
- In All the Bright Places, Theodore Finch’s internal conflict leads to self-destruction and ultimately to the
emotional ruin of Violet, his girlfriend and character opposite. At the start, their opposite traits prove the
scientific principle of opposing polarities being drawn to each other: positives attract negatives and vice-
versa, but as the story progresses it becomes apparent that their differences push them away from each
other rather than bring them together.
4. Reason of committing suicide, etc...
- Finch never stopped considering committing suicide. Surely, he was happier with Violet, but their project
was just an excuse for him to see new things and discover “All the Bright Places” to brighten Violet's days as
well, but also just for him to have one last adventure before finally realizing his plan. Finch portrayed that
even when things are good, even if someone "has it all", that depression can still be too much. Sometimes
that "suddenly happy, doing better" is a major warning sign that a plan has been made. He was either facing
the flames or jumping from the burning building, which is worse? On the inside, Finch faced tipping point
and he made the choice to escape the flames.
5. One sentence as an ending to the story.

- Despite still mourning the death of her lover, Violet gave a presentation on her project with Finch, explaining
that even though he was suffering, he helped her grow and see that there are many “bright places". (hence
the Title)
