Answer the following:

1. How can you apply the Principle of Utilitarianism in your own situation as a student ?

Considering the current setup of conducting classes, as a student no matter what kind of
mode of learning or setup is currently in used, I will always study hard and smart to aim for good
grades. Especially nowadays, there are so many distractions and the atmosphere at home
sometimes makes me feel less motivated and just want to procrastinate all day. But choosing to
study my lessons and accomplish my other activities is the better choice. Aside that, it might
increase my chance of having good grades, it will also make my family and other relatives
happy. This will assure them that their sacrifices and efforts just to sustain my needs in studying
will not be in vain. Instead of chilling all day, I still prefer to study because it produces the best
outcome not just for me, but also for my family.

2. If you were a front-liner, will you use your privilege to be served first at the Malls?

I will use it, but it depends on the situation. If I’m not in hurry and my agenda at the mall is
not really important and doesn’t need to be accomplish right away, I will not use my privilege to
be served first and will just wait for my turn, because there might be someone who needs to be
serve first. When having a grocery shopping, and I’m in hurry for duty or I need to do something
urgent, I will use my privilege to use the priority lane. I won’t deny it, but most of the time it is
convenient to use and will lessen my waiting time to be served, but I know that I will not always
use it.

II. Make a short reflection

Are all pains ethically bad? What about the pains of martyrdom and acts of heroism?

Not all pains are ethically bad. All pains will have a negative effect on us, but that doesn’t
mean that it is ethically bad. Like when we decide to do something that might hurt us but will be
beneficial for those people who matter to us. It is like sacrificing our welfare for the benefit of
others. These are the kinds of pain that for me, are not ethically bad. Because the very reason
why we experienced that pain is for the sake of the well-being of others, especially those people
who matter to us. From my standpoint, the pains of martyrdom and acts of heroism are not
ethically bad. For the pains of martyrdom, it is not experienced due to selfish acts or to harm
others therefore, for me I don’t consider it ethically bad. The pain caused by acts of heroism is
experienced for the betterment of a certain situation. This is when someone chose to sacrifice
their own well-being for the sake of others. For example, choosing to save someone whose life
is in danger, even though we know that it might cause pain to us.
