Case Analysis in
Engineering Management
`
Laura has a demanding schedule that requires frequent travel; however, she supervises two
managers who in turn are responsible for five staff members each. Both managers have been appointed
within the last six months.
Manager 1: Kelly has a specific background in research. She manages staff who provide research support
to another department that delivers behavioral health services to youth. Kelly supports her staff and is
very organized; however, she often takes a very black and white view of issues. Upper-level leadership
values Kelly’s latest research on the therapeutic division’s services. Kelly is very motivated and driven
and expects the same from her staff.
Manager 2: Linda has a strong background in social science research and evaluation. She manages staff
that work on different projects within the agency. She is known as a problem solver and is extremely
supportive of her staff. She is very organized and has a wealth of experience in evaluation of family
services. Linda is very capable and can sometimes take on too much.
The managers are sensing that staff are becoming overworked as everyone takes on increased
responsibilities due to high staff turnover. Staff have also mentioned that Laura’s "glass half-empty"
conversation style leaves them feeling dejected. In addition, Laura has not shared budgets with her
managers, so they are having difficulty appropriately allocating work to staff. Laura said she has not
received sufficient information from the finance department to complete the budgets. The finance
department said they have sent her all the information they have available.
As staff become distressed, the managers are becoming frustrated. They feel like they are unable
to advocate for their staff or solve problems without key information like the departmental budget.
`
II. Objectives
The objectives of this case study are:
1. To be able to utilize both management and leadership skills effectively.
2. To improve leadership and management skills.
3. To build staff confidence and boost morale for better performance in work.
4. To improve communication between the head, managers and employees.
Plan A – Study different management and leadership styles and conduct leadership
training
I. Advantages:
Studying different management and leadership styles will help department
heads and managers to acknowledge their strengths and weaknesses as a leader.
This will help an individual to know how to use these strengths, and make use of
different leadership styles to make up for the areas of weakness. Leadership
training can help to increase productivity, implement effective leadership style for
better decision making, and also expand employee engagement for a clear and
precise communication around the work environment.
II. Disadvantages:
One of the main disadvantages of conducting training is it could cost a lot
of money because it is required to pay someone to be the trainer. Even if it will be
conducted internally or externally, spending money is still required. The other
disadvantage is it uses a lot of time. This could cause a temporary staff shortage in
a department due to the absence of the managers and department heads because of
the training.
II. Disadvantages:
One of the disadvantages of an employee incentive program is that it could
cause a conflict within the organization. Due to its selection process, some
employees might get jealous when they don’t receive an incentive when some of
their colleagues have received it. That will lead some of the employees to think
that there is favoritism among them. It could escalate unhealthy competition
among the employees because some incentives are limited only to a few
individuals of top performers.
II. Disadvantages:
The use of transparent tools could consume a lot of time and an additional
responsibility for the managers and heads because they are the ones who will
organize it for every new project and task assigned to their team or department.
Also, some transparent tool is not free to use; some require a monthly subscription
to be able to use all of its features, therefore it will be an additional expense.
IV. Recommendation
Prioritize accountability in conducting leadership training. This implies that employers
should hold their employees accountable to take part in leadership training. The training should
also encourage the employees to continuously improve themselves for better performance. The
course of the training should fit the situation. It is also important to emphasize the goals of the
training so that the participants will be aware of the purpose of the training.
In order to protect the integrity of the incentive, employers should set up parameters for
it. Such as setup a limit or cap on incentive payments. For example, the incentive payments are
three times the target or will not exceed 100% of salary. It is important to make sure that the
employees’ focus is not only on the incentive because this might affect the quality of their
performance and sometimes this will cause some employees to do unwise actions for the
attainment of the incentive award.
It is also recommended that Laura and both the managers to undergo an evaluation of
leadership and management styles. This will help them know their capabilities as a leader and
what is needed to improve for them to be efficient in managing their staff. This will also help the
two managers to understand each other capabilities and fully utilize it to help the manpower.
V. Conclusion
Leadership and management play a vital role in organizational success. These two must
be present in an organization because if there is only good management but no leadership, the
results might be bureaucratic. If there is only an efficient leadership but ineffective management,
the results might be meaningless. Also, interaction between head, managers, and employee is
required to build a better communication system within the workplace. Because effective
communication helps to resolve the organization’s issues faster and smoothly. Efficient
leadership inspires the whole team to strive for greater accomplishments, and effective
management serves to motivate them to not lose sight of the organization’s goals and objectives.

Case Analysis 3
Case Analysis: PRETTY DOVE DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION: I'll follow the Boys
It was December when Engineer Milagros Abrera founded her own company, the Pretty Dove
Development Corporation (PDDC). The company was able to by a 51- hectare farmland along the
diversion road in Baliwag Bulacan. The land was developed in a residential subdivision with lot sizes
ranging from 300 to 500 square meters. Selling began as early as June.
Before founding PDDC, Engineer Abrera accumulated many years of experience working with
companies from construction to real estate development. The exposure helped her in managing the
activities of the company. As a general manager of PDDC, Engineer Abrera expanded its operations.
Rawlands were acquired in Cabanatuan City and San Jose City in Nueva Ecija, in Bataan and in Tarlac.
The marketing department of the company was able to sell the developed residential lots as quickly as
they should.
Engineer Abrera feels contented as the company's performance was beyond her expectations. As
she was reminiscing her graduation day at the University of the East in March, she remembers the word
of her close friend:
"Mila we have already finished our B.S. in Civil Engineering course. Someday, you and I may be
successful, but remember, nothing lasts forever. However, there is something you can do to delay the
inevitable."
Engineer Abrera suddenly thought that what her company is reaping now may not last forever.
They demand for residential lots may decline or there may be an oversupply of lots offered for sale.
In a recent meeting of the key officers of the company, the marketing manager hinted that the
company's sales growth may have already reached its peak and recommended that maybe it is time to
consider designing a new product.
After the meeting, Engineer Abrera sank in deep thought thinking of the relevance of a new
product design. After all, when she considered developing residential lots, it was as if she had a natural
feeling that households will require them. Years of observing keenly in the market gave her with
sufficient insights on demand and product specifications. Now, she feels so lost in deciding what moves
she should make.
`
On December 19, 1990, the Pretty Dove Development Corporation (PDDC) was founded by
Engineer Milagros Abrera. But it is inevitable when a company has reached its peak, and its sales will
decline. Just like what happened to the PDDC, they need to have a new design for their product because
nowadays, the companies that offer residential lots are increasing, therefore the customers have many
choices on which company they will choose, thus, this may lead to the decrease on sales of the PDDC.
The fishbone diagram for the root cause analysis of the case study is shown in Figure 1.
II. Objectives
1. To determine if designing and making a new product is the best choice for the company that has
reached its peak.
2. To come up with new marketing strategy.
3. To ensure that the products produce have excellent quality.
`
Plan A – Come up with a new marketing strategy and design new product
I. Advantage
In order to prevent the decline of sales, the PDDC must have a new
marketing strategy to attract customers, and design new product that will be
patronize by their customers. Thus, this will increase the sales of the company.
II. Disadvantage
I. Advantage
II. Disadvantage
Plan C – Engr Abrera should search and find a new location where there is high
I. Advantage
This plan will ensure that the company will hit the market share , thus
this will prevent its sales from declining.
`
II. Disadvantage
It this plan will not be successfully done, there’s a possibility that the
demand for the business might decline. This plan is time consuming and it
requires a quite large number of manpower.
IV. Recommendation
To prevent the possible decline in the growth of sales, they should come up with preventive
measures. This will help them to determine the possible cause and factors that affect the growth of sales.
This will help the company to come up with the right decisions and will reduce future expenditures. In
planning and designing a new product, it must be feasible to determine if it is effective or not. They
should also consider the price of the new product. It is recommended that it is not too expensive for the
target market, and must be in accordance with the taste and preferences of the customers. Since their
company is offering residential lots, they must ensure that its location is accessible and near to the market,
schools, and other establishments, because in getting a residential lot, customers always consider its
location.
V. Conclusion
It is inevitable when a business has reached its peak, and there’s a possibility that the success it is
experiencing will not last for a lifetime. Therefore, it is necessary that when building and managing a
business, they should always have a backup plan, in case things might get complicated or the business
growth will not sail smoothly. Also, being innovative plays a vital role in attracting customers. A business
must have a variety of products, and must not be fully confident that they will always stay on top. They
should be open for changes that will lead to the improvement of handling their business and its growth.
They should also have different preventive measures that may cause a reduction in the growth of the
business. This is where proper planning and operations management is highly needed. This will help in
choosing and implementing the best decision for the growth of the business.
