Chapter I

Introduction

Background of the Study

Work Immersion program is a course requirement for graduation that Senior High

School students must undergo wherein they directly experience the environment related

to their specialized field (DepED, 2017). It is implemented to make the students prepared

for the real-world situations. This is by giving them a training that can prepare them when

they go through the career path that they want to pursue. It also improves and builds new

skills of students, and it helps students to gain new skills that can also improve their

existing capabilities. Moreover, communication skill is an important skill where in two

people interact with the purpose of transmitting information such as thoughts and beliefs

of a person (Kirst, 2017). Likewise, interpersonal communication skill is significant in

developing human relationships through verbal or non-verbal means. Every individual

uses it to interact with other individual or a group as it is said to be one of the most

important life skill because our personal, social, and professional life relies on it

(Maharjan, 2018). Effective interpersonal communication in the workplace is important to

a well-functioning, high-performing team. Interpersonal skills are the ability to

communicate important information and manage social interactions. According to Roubler

(2018), "Effective interpersonal communication in the workplace is significant for a well-

functioning, high-performing team". Interpersonal skills in communicating has a big role

in giving information and managing socialization effectively. Business Communication

Quarterly journal explains that difficult skills are the ones that helps an individual to be an

expert that is needed for a job, while social skills are interpersonal qualities, such as

interacting with people. These can often be complicated to distinguish and measure, but

can be just as essential for career development, personal and team morale, and business

success.

However, based on the study of Lopez (2018), if the work immersion program is

not well implemented to the students, it could be disadvantageous for them. Since the

students of this program are still young and just a fresh graduate from junior high school,

there is a big possible chance that this program will not be able to succeed. Furthermore,

the work immersion is an off-campus activity, so the students are not well monitored. The

administration will only base their performance according to the written reports submitted

to them. He also states that the students who are placed in high-pressuring environment

are prone to anxiety so the schools must choose the best program for their students. Plata

(2019) also states that insufficient availability of classroom can affect the progress of the

skill of the students because of the not comfortable workplace that withdraws their

attention. Based on the statements above, it is evident that interpersonal communication

plays an important role in the students' career life, therefore its development is a must.

Moreover, work immersion program plays a pivotal role in preparing students in real-life

workplace and if it is not well implemented it can affect one’s ability to be ready in the

chosen career path. In result, the researchers want to conduct a study to test the role of

work immersion in developing interpersonal communication skills regardless of the

hindrances that they might face during the work immersion program of the freshman

college students taking Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at Pamantasan

ng Lungsod ng Valenzuela.

Senior High School Department

On the study of Pope (2015), it was stated that having interpersonal

communication skills is really necessary in the future hiring or employment success,

especially if it was already learned when they were just students. In addition, Abao and

Enoc (2018) states that learning in classrooms are not enough, the students must

experience to learn better. This is supported by the experiential theory of Kolb wherein

he said that experience is significant for students to learn, improve or gain new skills in

the process. Unlike the other studies, this will find not just the effect of work immersion

but also test if the students’ interpersonal skill is influenced after undergoing work

immersion program in case hindrances are faced during the period of the said program.

At the end of the study, the researchers will provide an article containing the result,

conclusion, and recommendations based on study for the benefits of the students,

parents, institutions, companies, and future researchers.

Statement of the Problem

The study focuses on the role of work immersion program in developing the

interpersonal communication skill of the freshmen students taking Bachelor of Science in

Business Administration students in Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Valenzuela Academic

year 2019-2020 considering the factors that they can experience during the work

immersion period.

Specifically the study will focus on answering the following questions:

1. What is the status of implementation of work immersion program in the areas

of:

1.1. Age Classification

PAMANTASAN NG LUNGSOD NG VALENZUELA

Senior High School Department

1.2. Student Monitoring

1.3. Work Environment

2. What is the level of interpersonal communication skill of students in the areas

of:

2.1 . Teamwork

2.2 . Verbal Communication

3. Is there a significant relationship between the status of implementation of work

immersion program and the levels of interpersonal communication skill of the

respondents?

4. What is the proposed output of the study?

Theoretical Framework

The researcher will use the Social Cognitive Theory (Bandura, 1989) where in it

states that people can learn through observation and social interaction (as cited by

Behavioral Change Models, 2019). This theory will be use to assess if the students who

undergo work immersion program can affect their interpersonal communication skills by

observing and interacting among their co-workers that can result to the development of

the said skill which is an important skill a person should posses.

Experiential Theory of Kolb (1984) will also be use, for this theory states that

students are capable to learn through experience (as cited in McLeod, 2017). This is to

evaluate if experiencing work immersion program improves the interpersonal

communication skills of the students. Both theories seems to be connected because

students under work immersion program are experiencing interactions with co-workers

as well as observe and experience the actual workplace. The two theories will be use to

know the effect of the work immersion program in interpersonal communication skill of

the students but also test if the students’ interpersonal communication skill is developed

considering the status of work immersion program in the areas of age classification,

student monitoring, and work environment also the level of interpersonal communication

skill of the respondents in the areas of verbal communication and teamwork.

Hypothesis

There is no significant relationship between the status of implementation of work

immersion program and the levels of interpersonal communication skill of the

respondents.

It will discuss how the Social Cognitive Theory (Bandura, 1989) and Experiential

Theory (Kolb, 1984) assess how those theories affects the work immersion program.

This is to evaluate if experiencing work immersion program improves the interpersonal

communication skills of the students. Then the theories will be used to know the effects

of implementation of work immersion program in interpersonal communication skills of

the students and also to test if their interpersonal communication skills are developed

considering the status of work immersion program in the areas of age classification,

student monitoring, and work environment, also the level of interpersonal

communication skill of the respondents in the area of verbal communication and

teamwork.

the areas of age classification, student monitoring, and work environment. Also, survey

questionnaire to answer the level of Interpersonal communication skill of the respondents

in the areas of verbal communication and teamwork to be answer by freshman students

taking Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng

Valenzuela Academic Year 2019-2020 who are convenient to answer the questionnaire

provided by the researchers by the time the researchers are surveying. Next, researchers

will finally conduct the survey. Then, after answering the questionnaire, the researcher

will collect the filled up questionnaire. Following this, the data analysis will take place

where the research will analyze the answers of the respondents. Afterward, proceed to

the interpretation of data where the researchers will interpret the answers of the

respondents if the implementation of the work immersion program has a significant

relation to the level of interpersonal communication skills of the students. Finally, the

researchers will make the proposed output of making an article about the result,

conclusion, and recommendation of the study.

Scope and Limitation

This study focuses on the answering if there is a significant relationship between

the implementation of work immersion program in developing interpersonal

communication skills of the students from Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Valenzuela where

in Quota Sampling will be used to identify the number of respondents needed. Also,

Convenience Sampling in the administration of the survey. The researchers will use Likert

scale to identify the status of implementation of the work immersion program and also

use this method to measure the level of interpersonal communication skills. The statistical

treatment will be used is the Pearson Correlation Coefficient to test if there is a significant

relationship between the implementation of work immersion and the level of interpersonal

communication skills. The research data is based on the survey questionnaire that will be

answered by the respondents. The study is limited only to the freshman Business

Administration students in Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Valenzuela Academic Year 2019-

2020 who experienced work immersion. The study will only include age classification,

CHAPTER II

Related Literature and Studies

This chapter deals with the review of related literature and studies both foreign and

local which considered relevant to the study.

Definition of Work Immersion Program

According to Acar (2019), the Philippine Department of Education (DepEd) is

undertaking the major reforms that anchored the implementation of a new K to 12 system

that needs to improve the basic education for Filipino children. The newest reform of the

department is the Senior High School (SHS) that has a goal to prepare the students to

pursue higher education; for the job or to manage a business. One of the requirements

before the graduation of SHS is the Work Immersion Program. The students familiarized

the work-related environment related to their field because through the work immersion

they are exposed in there. The focus of this is to let students gain relevant and skills under

the guidance of industry workers and experts; appreciate the importance of the lessons

that have been taught in the classroom, and enhance their knowledge and skills. In

addition, it has been revealed that the environment allows the respondents to appreciate

the tools and equipment in the workplace, also students were aided with learning

materials and perform hand-on tasks.

Importance of the Work Immersion Program

As stated by The Asia Foundation (2018) youth unemployment is a large problem

in the Philippines. Department of Education’s Senior High School (SHS) program is the

only way to address it and assist by the K-12 education reform. The work immersion

program provides students with real workplace experience, providing students with a set

Senior High School Department

of skills that can help them to inform and improve their skills. It tells how the Coalitions for

Change (CfC) program worked with local and international industries to address the policy

in SHS work immersions. It works well with a high passing rate in National Certification.

The work immersion program is a must because the students are faced with real-world

activities that will allow them to use the competencies they have learned in school.

Moreover, even if they can get a job, 80% of the students continue college education after

the K to 12 program, based on surveys (Gallarde, 2018). In addition, work immersion is

the highlight of Senior High School, it is important to the students for this experience will

help them to grow and improve themselves as a professional. Exposure to the actual

workplace using tools, equipment, and documents for a specific job. Therefore this

experience will help them in their current or future job (Lozada, 2017).

The work immersion program is important for it allows the students to gain and

improve their skill, as well as shapes the attitude of a student for better cooperation within

an organization for a better quality of working life because this program will serve as a

training ground that let student experience real workplace scenarios (Victory Christian

National High School, 2015; Basariya and Sudhakar, 2018).

Definition of On-The-Job Training

According to the Encyclopedia of Business (2011), as cited by De Jesus (2012), on-

the-job training is the oldest form of training that is located outside the school premises

wherein students are working alongside with experienced worker, professionals, just like

what is practiced during middle age where master craftsmen passed their knowledge to

their apprentice.

PAMANTASAN NG LUNGSOD NG VALENZUELA
Tongco St., Maysan Road, Valenzuela City
Senior High School Department

OJT or on-the-job training is a training that helps and makes the students improve

their performance specifically inside a workplace which involves hands-on experience of

the real job. Also, this training contributes to students’ experiences and abilities while

enhancing their acquired knowledge. Having training helps to lessen mistakes or errors

that might occur inside the workplace (Indeed Career Guide, 2019). Besides, De Jesus

(2012) stated that OJT program objectives are recognized on being a very good extent.

As the supervisors' evaluation, trainees did well on in their on-the-job training in terms of

job and behavioral attributes. Trainees enjoy the food that they received from their

supervisors but they do not receive any monetary l, medical support, and insurance while

they are having their training.

Besides, on the job training is a program of learning a skill, knowledge, and other

competencies that will be acquired in performing the given job or task in the workplace as

a requirement of their training (Heathfield, 2019).

Advantages and Disadvantages

On-the-job training happens inside the workplace and this training has its

advantages and disadvantages. Students must not take it for granted for a good

performance in the workplace may result in the employer hiring the student after they

graduate college, or give them monthly allowance as a return for their very good

performance. It will help the students to become confident in their chosen careers. And

not doing well can affect your application for a job because employers are also looking

for a person’s background during the OJT (PCdreams, 2016).

Hence, on-the-job training provides job experience to the college students that can

influence the student’s attitude towards the workplace. The problem comes in if the

PAMANTASAN NG LUNGSOD NG VALENZUELA
Tongco St., Maysan Road, Valenzuela City
Senior High School Department

institution poorly chooses training that will guide the students. It is not a practical move

considering that these students are the future employees and learning from a not well-

trained instructor can highly affect one’s perception of what a person should be an

employee (StudyMoose, 2016).

Definition of Age Classification

According to Wen-Bing, Cheng-Ping & Chun-Wen (2001), as cited by Prasad &

Yarlagadda (2015), age classification was formed which considered four different human

age groups. Infants, young adults, middle-aged adults, and seniors, are the four different

classification of human age.

Larkin (2019), defines it as the diversity in age inside the workplace. Nowadays

the age diversity in the workplace has become a challenge to business leaders for it is

hard to manage a team with people of different ages as well as have different needs and

wants in the workplace. Because these problems arise such as discrimination. But

research shows that the more diverse the age is the more successful a business is.

According to Garver (2017), discrimination by age is not only affecting the eldest

workers in the workplace but also the young workers too. Even though there is a lot of

kind of discrimination happens inside the workplace, ageism is still the common one.

People see ageism in the workplace as a problem for the elder workers, but if you look

on the other side of that, the young workers inside the workplace are also experiencing

it. This is because of the stereotyping that workers at a young age seem to be lazy,

spoiled, unpredictable, unreliable, and unprofessional, which causes the companies to

doubt hiring them.

PAMANTASAN NG LUNGSOD NG VALENZUELA
Tongco St., Maysan Road, Valenzuela City
Senior High School Department

As stated in the study of Cho, Chung, Kim, Park, Park, Yang & Yang, (2015), the

age and the workability of an employee has no significant relationship with each other. It

also said that elder employees and young employees are the same when it comes to

productivity, skill, and speed.

On the other hand, according to Del Rosario (2015), younger workers have favored

greater participation by being able to involve in decision making in their workplace. It may

imply that those young workers favor organizations that can allow them to be empowered

and involved.

Definition of Student monitoring

Inside the classroom, it is the act of monitoring students to be able to identify the

students’ performance. It allows the teacher to spot if his students are doing their assigned

task and if progress is visible, and if not, they will be able to do something immediately to

help their students (Victoria, 2019). Just like inside the workplace, students who are

having immersion should also be monitored by their supervisors to see if the student

trainees do the assigned tasks to them effectively and also to evaluate their progress.

According to Cleal and Sell (2011), as cited by Sagun (2019), being available to

supervisors in the time of need, share their knowledge, and having the ability to interact

with employees and communicate well are some of the basic traits that supervisor should

have. It is said that having a well and effective supervision gives employees a high

satisfactory level while if they communicate less, employees’ satisfaction becomes less.

Moreover, according to the University of New South Wales (2020), facilitating and

helping the group works allow the individual to monitor the current situation of a group,

the progress, and also help when it encounters challenges. Hence, in group activities

PAMANTASAN NG LUNGSOD NG VALENZUELA
Tongco St., Maysan Road, Valenzuela City
Senior High School Department

even though some students were informed what to do there are still who are not cleared

about their task, this is when the adviser comes in as a guide to make sure that clarity

has been done. This allows the students to gradually improve through time, also builds

connections within its members.

With the use of technological advancement, monitoring employees is easier, an

example is the use of GPS in locating company vehicles, use of surveillance cameras to

monitor the employees inside the company which is a good thing to assure the rules and

policies are well implemented, as well as monitor their performance, also use for their

safety. But it has its cons such as the employees feel anxious about the company invading

their personal spaces and can also mean that they do not trust their employees (Miller,

2019; Alampaya and Mechanova, 2010).

Definition of Work environment

Work environment is where employees can interact with their peers, subordinates,

and managers. It also includes the physical condition of the workplace such as office

temperature, equipment, and the work processes or procedures (Money-zine. com,

2019).

Additionally, according to Anne, Esser, Holte, and Lane (2010), as cited by Sagun

(2019), the working environment consists of job security, safety to employees, good

performance, motivation to perform well, and participation in the decision making for the

sake of their firm. There are different factors within the working environment, wages, and

communication that may be effect job discrimination. Once the employees understood

the essence of the firm, they have a high possibility to commit and give loyalty to their

organization.

Importance of Work Environment

Building a good work environment is key to making your company successful and

have competent and happy employees. It helps to build solid teamwork, do a better job

and would improve their outputs that lead to a successful team (Philstar. com, 2016).

In the research study of Maulabakhsh and Raziq (2015) entitled "Impact of Working

Environment on Job Satisfaction", discussed that having a good working environment is

imperative in attaining job satisfaction of the employees. Employees nowadays were

concerned about their work environment especially in working hours, job safety &

security, relationships with co-workers, esteem needs and top management so the

companies have to ensure that employees were working in a conducive and friendly

environment. Also, creating a positive work environment the study tends to have a happy

employee who is more engaged, can do a better job, and lower the rates of absenteeism

and less stress that will result to the improved performance and productivity of a person

(Abun, Agoot, Lalaine, Magallanes, Paynaen and Pre, 2018; Blackman, 2018).

Moreover, according to Ilo (2018), as cited by Sagun (2019), it is estimated by the

Philippine Government that most of the employees were satisfied in the safety and health

protection and services of an enterprise even if it is a medium or large enterprise. But it

also stated that in 38.8 million of the nation’s workforce, there is only 1 out of 18 who is

experiencing safety and health protection and services in the workplace.

Definition of Interpersonal Communication Skill

Lim (2019) states that interpersonal communication skill is an act of interacting

effectively to a person as well as the ability to work well with other people, referred to as

social intelligence, interpreting signal to accurately identify the information a person wants

PAMANTASAN NG LUNGSOD NG VALENZUELA
Tongco St., Maysan Road, Valenzuela City
Senior High School Department

to convey. The exchange of information, ideas and thought, to another which includes

verbal communication and teamwork (Times Square Chronicles, 2019).

Importance of Interpersonal Communication Skill

The said skill is important to the life of a person, it is a life skill that helps a person

to succeed and developing it can prevent arguments, and misinterpretation between you

and the person you talk to (Terrell, 2019). Moreover according to the study by Hurst,

Nixon, and Wallace (2013) the data collected reveals that students agree that learning

through interaction enhances their knowledge and boosts problem-solving skills. An

effective way that allows students to engage in the discussion. Furthermore, Philippine

Business Social Progress conduct a study in Cagayan De Oro City wherein it states that

Senior High School (SHS) students should be skilled in problem-solving and interpersonal

communication skill to support the SHS program. One of the activities was the Job Market

study to determine the current labor demand and supply in Cagayan De Oro and nearby

provinces and how well SHS students respond. The result of the study provides

information and insights about industry and jobs available for the SHS students (Retunil,

2017).

Definition of Teamwork

Teamwork is an act of working with a group of people and doing your part

professionally and efficiently to achieve a goal or complete a task (Leonard, 2018).

Importance of Teamwork

According to the study made by Hisam and Sanyal (2018), it has been proved that

teamwork has a significant relation to the performance of an employee alongside

leadership and structure, group morale and results, assessment and incentives.

PAMANTASAN NG LUNGSOD NG VALENZUELA
Tongco St., Maysan Road, Valenzuela City
Senior High School Department

Developing these will result in a positive performance of a person in the workplace

regardless if it is organizational or individual. In addition based on Ogbonnaya (2019)

teamwork can be both beneficial and not in the workplace. According to the result of the

interviews positive outcome such as higher level of productivity and better quality of

products and services are seen but contrary to the positive idea that teamwork cause it

also leads to the increase in the anxiousness of the employees for the positive outcome

results to the pressuring environment where a higher level of expectation from the

management are set that makes them feel tense during work.

Moreover, a study made by Lucena and San Jose (2016) stated that cooperative

learning allows the students to express their ideas during the collaboration. A constructive

approach to develop speaking skills by cooperating with their peers. Performing it with a

group and let the fearful students boost their confidence standing realizing the

responsibility to discuss their concept. This is supported by social cognitive theory by

Bandura wherein interaction takes place to acquire knowledge.

In addition, developing a child’s ability to work with others allows them to develop

social and emotional skills, and also improves self-confidence. Experiencing working in

teams can make them feel like they belong to the community. Aside from gaining new

knowledge from other people it increases competitiveness as well as a good sport which

is a positive attitude that young one should have (The Freeman, 2017). Teamwork is the

ability to cooperate with other people.

From the study by Alafriz, Calleja, and Hechanova (2014) Filipino teamwork is

different because it does not only focus on being competent in making good quality

products and service but Filipino workers also include the attitude of their co-workers, to

Senior High School Department

feel like there is a greater bond between them that makes them feel like they are family.

Their social relation allows them to work together efficiently. Understanding the culture

that a person belongs to can affect the teams’ cooperation during tasks.

Definition of Verbal Communication

According to Lucanus (2017), Oral communication skills are substantial for every

student because it is a vital skill to be successful and to achieve future goals of the

students’ career choice. Oral communication allows students to productively

communicate stating their arguments, stand and doubts effectively. Additionally, in a blog

made by LookUpgrade (2018), it stated that verbal communication is the way a person

expresses ideas orally and Filipinos are good in doing so. Filipinos way of talking allows

the listener to understand the speaker for they express it with humility and decent while

keeping the respect while talking especially to older people to avoid conflicts or

misunderstanding that is why a person should develop his verbal communication skills to

avoid problems while communicating thoughts with other people.

Importance of Verbal Communication Skill

According to the findings of the study of Rahim and Tazijan (2011), an intern must

have good communication skill since it is part of their profession that includes interaction

with their supervisors, peers, and subordinates and having less exposure in

communication skills in the classroom is the main reason why interns have low ability

when it comes to verbal communication especially when it needs to have a wider range

of skills. An explanation for it is that the students only practicing it during their internship.

As Black (2018) said, the employees improve their communication skills inside the

workplace when they observe the way how their supervisor/s communicate professionally

PAMANTASAN NG LUNGSOD NG VALENZUELA

Senior High School Department

with others. This is because the supervisors’ role was not just to guide them but also be

a role model to be followed.

Synthesis

According to Acar (2019), the Philippine Department of Education (DepEd) is

undertaking the major reforms that anchored the implementation of a new K to 12 system

that needs to improve the basic education for Filipino children. The newest reform of the

department is the Senior High School (SHS) that has a goal to prepare the students to

pursue higher education; for the job or to manage a business. Thus, it was stated by

Lozada (2017) that the work immersion is the highlight of Senior High School, it is

important to the students for this experience will help them to grow and improve

themselves as a professional. Exposure to the actual workplace using tools, equipment,

On the other hand According to the Encyclopedia of Business (2011), as cited by

De Jesus (2012), on-the-job training is the oldest form of training that is located outside

the school premises wherein students are working alongside with experienced worker,

professionals. OJT or on-the-job training is a training that helps and makes the students

improve their performance specifically inside a workplace which involves hands-on

experience of the real job (Indeed Career Guide, 2019). Hence, the problem comes in if

the institution poorly chooses training that will guide the students (StudyMoose, 2016).

Age classification was defined by Larkin (2019) as the diversity in age inside the

workplace. Nowadays the age diversity in the workplace has become a challenge to

business leaders for it is hard to manage a team with people of different ages as well as

PAMANTASAN NG LUNGSOD NG VALENZUELA
Tongco St., Maysan Road, Valenzuela City
Senior High School Department

have different needs and wants in the workplace. Because of these, problems arise such

as discrimination. According to Garver (2017), discrimination by age is not only affecting

the eldest workers in the workplace but also the young workers too. This is because of

the stereotyping that workers at a young age seem to be lazy, spoiled, unpredictable,

unreliable, and unprofessional, which causes the companies to doubt hiring them. But it

was stated in the study of Cho, Chung, Kim, Park, Park, Yang & Yang, (2015), that the

age and the workability of an employee has no significant relationship with each other. It

also said that elder employees and young employees are the same when it comes to

productivity, skill, and speed.

Student monitoring, Victoria (2019) said that inside the classroom, it is the act of

monitoring students to be able to identify the students’ performance. And according to

Cleal and Sell (2011), as cited by Sagun (2019), being available to supervisors in the time

of need, share their knowledge, and having the ability to interact with employees and

communicate well are some of the basic traits that supervisor should have. Moreover,

according to the University of New South Wales (2020), facilitating and helping the group

works allow the individual to monitor the current situation of a group, the progress, and

also help when it encounters challenges. But it has its cons such as the employees feel

anxious about the company invading their personal spaces and can also mean that they

do not trust their employees (Miller, 2019; Alampaya and Mechanova, 2010).

Work environment is where employees can interact with their peers, subordinates,

and managers. It also includes the physical condition of the workplace such as office

temperature, equipment, and the work processes or procedures (Money-zine. com,

2019).In this case according to Philstar. Com (2016) building a good work environment

Senior High School Department

is key to making your company successful and have competent and happy employees. It

helps to build solid teamwork, do a better job and would improve their outputs that lead

to a successful team.

Lim (2019) states that interpersonal communication skill is an act of interacting

effectively to a person as well as the ability to work well with other people, referred to as

social intelligence. The said skill is important to the life of a person, it is a life skill that

helps a person to succeed and developing it can prevent arguments, and

misinterpretation between you and the person you talk to (Terrell, 2019). Moreover

according to the study by Hurst, Nixon, and Wallace (2013) the data collected reveals

that students agree that learning through interaction enhances their knowledge and

boosts problem-solving skills.

Teamwork is an act of working with a group of people and doing your part

professionally and efficiently to achieve a goal or complete a task (Leonard, 2018).

Moreover, a study made by Lucena and San Jose (2016) stated that cooperative learning

allows the students to express their ideas during the collaboration. And based on

Ogbonnaya (2019) teamwork can be both beneficial and not in the workplace.

According to Lucanus (2017), Oral communication skills are substantial for every

student because it is a vital skill to be successful and to achieve future goals of the

students’ career choice. According to the findings of the study of Rahim and Tazijan

(2011), an intern must have good communication skill since it is part of their profession

that includes interaction with their supervisors, peers, and subordinates.

CHAPTER III

This chapter presented the research method used, population and sample size,

sampling technique description of the respondents and also the data gathering procedure

and the instrumentation of this study.

RESEARCH DESIGN AND RESEARCH METHOD

A retrospective research design uses data that already happened and recorded

for other use than research (Hess, 2004). Since it tackles the events that happened in the

past then it can help the researchers to identify and analyze the experiences of the

freshman student, taking Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, after they

undergo the work immersion program, and to know how it affects their interpersonal

communication skills.

In order to collect the data needed, the researchers will use quota sampling and

convenience sampling in getting the respondents, also survey questionnaires will be

distributed to the students consisting of open and closed questions. With the use of the

Likert scale, Weighted Mean, and Pearson Correlation Coefficient the researchers will

determine the relationship of the work immersion program in developing the interpersonal

communication skill of the students.

This study uses Quantitative Research for the researchers will gather relevant data

that is numerical in form. Quantitative research deals with statistical, mathematical, and

numerical data gathered through survey questionnaires. Quantitative research gathers

information from existing respondents using sampling methods and survey using

questionnaires that depicted in the form of numerical (Babbie, n.d. as cited by University

of Southern California, 2020).

SAMPLE AND SAMPLING TECHNIQUE

The researchers will use quota sampling and convenient sampling to choose their

respondents. Quota sampling is a kind of non-probability sampling that gets a whole

population and divide it into different subgroups wherein the researchers will calculate its

proportions to have the correct number of respondents they should get in each subgroup

(Aprameya, 2016). In this study, the researchers will get 100 respondents from the

freshmen students of Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Department,

wherein the students’ population is 290. 117 students in Financial Management (40% in

total), 48 students in Human Resource Development Management (17% in total), and

125 students in Marketing Management (43% in total). While convenience sampling is a

non-probability sampling that chooses respondents who are available on the day where

the survey will be conducted (Crossman, 2019). This will be used because the researcher

will only choose who students that are available or who are able to answer the survey

questionnaire on the day they will conduct the survey.

RESEARCH LOCALE

This research will be conducted in Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Valenzuela

Dalandanan National High School Extension, Valenzuela City particularly in Senior High

School Department. The respondents of this study are the freshmen student taking

Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng

Valenzuela who experienced work immersion program.

Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Valenzuela is a state-owned public university in the

Philippines that is established to respond to the increasing need for Valenzuelanos for an

affordable and accessible learning institution on June 5, 2002. Its establishment was led

by Dr. Jose R. Vergara then Acting Division Superintendent Dr. Andres M. Leabres, City

Administrator Atty. Carmelita D. Lozada, Mr. Edison M. Nalo, Executive Director of

Valenzuela Polytechnic College and Mr. Erlindo C. Dionisio and Atty. Antonio M. Dalag,

the Vice-president and President of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Valenzuela in July

2001 and later principals of public and secondary schools in the city joined in a study to

form the school. In 2008 the school expanded from having eight courses to 19 courses,

also buy land near Children of Mary Immaculate College. Undergraduate courses, as well

as degree programs in education, are offered, it is also a K-12 ready that offers STEM,

ABM, GAS, HUMMS, and Arts and Design track to Senior High School students. The

school is originally located at the government building within the vicinity of the old

municipal complex of Valenzuela. Currently, a new campus was built located in Tongco

St., Maysan Road, Valenzuela City. This school is the response of the government to give

high-quality education to Valenzuelanos. As of 2020, it offers 19 undergraduate courses,

two graduate courses, and two special programs (Revolvy, n.d.).

INSTRUMENT AND TECHNIQUE

The survey-questionnaire will serve as the instrument on gathering the data that

will be answered by the freshmen students taking Bachelor of Science in Business

Administration in Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Valenzuela. The survey-questionnaire set

by two categories collects the data about the status of work immersion program in the

areas of age classification, student monitoring, and work environment and the level of

interpersonal communication skills (verbal communication and teamwork).

The survey-questionnaire are set by two categories: work immersion and

interpersonal communication skills, both categories containing specific areas where in

each area have five questions to answer. The first part of the paper is to determine the

status of work immersion program in the areas of age classification, student monitoring,

and work environment. And the second part is to test the level of interpersonal

communication skills of the freshmen student specifically verbal communication and

teamwork. These two variables will show how the work immersion program influences the

level of interpersonal communication skills of the freshmen students.

The modified questionnaire from Skill You Need, (2017), and self-made

questionnaire will be submitted for a content validation to four professionals to check the

validity of the survey questionnaire and give their recommendations to improve it.

Data Analysis

To answer the statement of the problem one and two about what is the status of

implementation of work immersion program in the areas of age classification, student

monitoring, work environment, and what is the level of interpersonal communication skill

of students in the areas of verbal communication and teamwork respectively weighted

mean will be used. Then to answer problem number three, is there a significant

relationship between the status of implementation of work immersion program and the

levels of interpersonal communication skill of the respondents?, Pearson Correlation

Coefficient is often referred to as Pearson R will be used.

Likert Scale

A Likert Scale is a rating scale that estimates how people feel about something, it

is often found in survey forms. It entails a progression of questions that you request

people to answer. It is ideal for helping individuals answer complex questions about your

business (Liedke, 2018). This will be used to gather the needed findings of the study by

giving the respondents the survey-questionnaire for them to answer.

Weighted mean

Weighted mean is used to get the average of the data from the gathered survey

(BDictionary, 2020). The researchers will use the weighted mean to identify the status of

implementation of the work immersion program in the areas of age classification, student

monitoring, and work environment. Also, to get the level of interpersonal communication

skills of the students in the areas of teamwork and verbal communication.

Pearson Correlation Coefficient

Pearson Correlation Coefficient is often referred as Pearson R test it is a statistical

formula used to measure the strength between variables and relationships (Statistics

Solution, 2019). This will be used to determine how strong the relationship between work

immersion and interpersonal communication skills.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

First, the researchers will modify a questionnaire, and make use of a self-made

survey-questionnaire related to the study to know the status of the work immersion

program in the areas of age classification, student monitoring, and work environment and

also to measure the level of interpersonal communication skills of the student in teamwork

and verbal communication.

Then, the researchers will ask the main office of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng

Valenzuela to know the population of the students taking courses under Business

Administration. Then, provide a letter of administration to be able to conduct the survey.

The researchers will start giving out the survey questionnaires. The needed

respondents will be given a survey-questionnaires set by two categories to know the

status of the work immersion program in the areas of age classification, student

monitoring, and work environment and the level of interpersonal communication skills

(verbal communication and teamwork).

The researchers will collect the answered questionnaire from the respondents and

check the paper if the respondents did not leave blank in the questionnaire. Likert Scale

will be used to measure both the status of the work immersion program and the level of

interpersonal communication skills of the students.

After collecting the answered questionnaires, the weighted mean will be used to

measure both the status of the work immersion program and the level of interpersonal

communication skills of the students. Then the Pearson Correlation Coefficient will be

used to identify if there is a significant relationship between the two independent

variables.

Lastly, the findings of the study are ready to be analyzed and interpreted by the

researchers. They will also make recommendations and conclusions, and they will

provide an article about the study.

Based on the data obtained from freshman students of the Bachelor of Science in

Business Administration in the area of age classification, indicator number 2 has the

highest weighted mean, which is 3.38 with a descriptive rating of strongly agree. Followed

by indicator number 3 with a weighted mean of 3.07 and a strongly agree rating. Next is

indicator number 5 with a weighted mean of 3.02 and has a concise agreement ranking.

Then indicator number 1 has a weighted mean of 2.98 and an agreed rating. Finally,

indicator number 4 has the lowest weighted mean of 2.7 also has an agreement rating.

As you seen above, most of the students state that regardless of how young they

are, age is not a hindrance to effectively learn from work immersion program. In addition,

age is not a problem during work immersion program for most of the students agreed that

their skills are not belittled and they develop their skills for their workload are in

accordance with their age. They also agreed that their age does not affect how their co-

workers treat them. This is supported by the study made by Cho et.al (2015) where they

state that older employees and young employees are the same when it comes to

productivity, skill, and speed. Therefore, their age and workability have no significant

relationship with each other. Since students are treated like employees in the workplace.

Unlike what Garver (2017) said, discrimination by age affects the young workers in the

workplace. This is because of the stereotyping that workers at a young age seem to be

lazy, spoiled, unpredictable, unreliable, and unprofessional, which causes the companies

to doubt hiring them.

PAMANTASAN NG LUNGSOD NG VALENZUELA
Tongco St., Maysan Road, Valenzuela City
Senior High School Department

On the other hand, the data provided in the area of student monitoring, among the

five indicators, indicator number 4 has the highest weighted mean of 3.9, which has a

strongly agree descriptive rating followed by indicator number 2 with a weighted mean of

3.31 also has a strongly agree descriptive rating. Moreover, indicator number 1 was 3.27,

weighted mean, with a strong agreement rating, followed by indicator number 5 with a

weighted mean of 3.24 and a descriptive agreement rating. Lastly, indicator number 3

has the lowest weighted mean of 3.18 and has a descriptive agreement rating.

According to the data presented it showed that most of the respondents strongly

agree that they are supervised/monitored accordingly, and frequent monitoring allows

their supervisor to keep track of their performance, just like what is stated by Victoria

(2019) it allows the teacher to spot if his students are doing their assigned task and if

progress is visible, and if not, they will be able to do something immediately to help their

students, therefore both the statements support that monitoring is important for the

students during their work immersion. It has been also agreed that their work performance

is regularly checked by their work immersion teacher, frequent monitoring allows them to

be motivated, and they do well when their supervisor checks on them, these serve as a

support to the first two statements that student monitoring is well implemented and it is a

must for the students. In contrary to views of the most of the respondents, Miller (2019)

stated that monitoring has its cons because they feel anxious about the company invading

their personal spaces. They think they do not trust their employees.

PAMANTASAN NG LUNGSOD NG VALENZUELA
Tongco St., Maysan Road, Valenzuela City
Senior High School Department

In addition to the data presented in the area of the work environment, among the

five indicators, indicator number 5 has the highest weighted mean of 3.96 and a strongly

agree descriptive rating. Indicator number 1 comes next, it has a weighted mean of 3.29

and a descriptive rating of strongly agree, same with the indicator number 3 that shows

the same weighted mean of 3.29 and a descriptive rating of strongly agree. Besides,

indicator number 4 has a weighted mean of 3.17 with a descriptive rating of agree. Finally,

indicator number 2 has the least weighted mean of 2.89 and a descriptive rating of agree.

The data showed that most of the respondents strongly agreed that they are

comfortable with the environment they are working to, feeling safe and secure while doing

their job, and it allows them to communicate freely with the people around them, which

results in the development of their interpersonal skill. The statements support that in the

work environment, students can develop their interpersonal skills by communicating with

their co-workers or colleagues without feeling the awkwardness and it can help the

company to grow in the future because building a good work environment is a key in

making your company successful and have a competent and happy employees

(Philstar.com, 2016). Most of the respondents also agreed that having enough facilities

can help them to do their work accordingly this proves that in a workplace it needs to have

enough facilities so that students can do their job properly. However, based on the study

by ILO (2018), the Philippine government estimates that 17 out of 18 employees do not

benefit from occupational safety and health from small and large enterprises.

Table 2. Summary distribution of computed weighted mean of the status of work

The data present from the table 2, among the three areas, the area of student

monitoring has the highest weighted mean which is 3.38 and have a descriptive rating of

strongly agree. Followed by the area of work environment having 3.29 weighted mean

and a descriptive rating of strongly agree. And the area of age classification got the lowest

weighted mean which is 3.03 and also having a descriptive rating of agree. The three

areas general weighted mean is 3.35 with a descriptive rating of agree.

The data revealed that most of the respondents agreed that student monitoring

plays the highest factor for them to perform well during the work immersion program. It

shows that most of the respondents were checked by the work immersion teacher and

supervisor, moreover motivate them to perform well in their designated tasks. Then Work

Environment ranked 2nd, which states that being able to move in the workplace feeling

safe and secure, enjoying the comfortability of the workplace allows them to communicate

and work without feeling too awkward with their older comrades, the staffs. Then the least

is age classification, wherein most of the respondents agreed to that age does not hold

too much effect on their performance at work and their skills are being developed inside

the workplace without being belittled because of their age. Hence, the reason why age

classification scored the lowest is because some respondents think that their workloads

were too hard or light for their age, also their age affects how their co-workers treat them.

Based on the given data, in the area of teamwork, the data show off among the

five indicators, indicator number 1 has the highest weighted mean which is 3.24 and have

a descriptive rating of strongly agree. Followed by indicator number 3 having a 3.16

weighted mean and a descriptive rating of agree. Next is indicator number 2 with a

weighted mean of 3.08 that reflects a descriptive rating of agreeing and then followed by

indicator number 5 having a 3.02 weighted mean and a descriptive rating of agree. Lastly,

indicator number 4 has the lowest weighted mean which is 2.81 and a descriptive rating

of agree.

These data above revealed that because of the work immersion program, most of

the respondents became more comfortable with other people, fit in their new group or

being able to team up with others. They also tend to develop their cooperation with their

groupmates that is why they did not avoid participating and have teamwork instead. Just

like what Hisam and Sanyal (2018) said, having teamwork inside a workplace has a

significant relationship with the performance of their employees. Where it makes their

employees do well in their jobs/tasks that were assigned to them. However, doing well

comes with its cons, which is higher expectations, wherein employees feel tensed and

pressured during work (Ogbonnaya, 2019).

In addition, the data showed that in the area of verbal communication, indicator

number 3 got the highest weighted mean valued 3.29 having a descriptive rating of

strongly agree. Then indicator number 1 with 3.17 weighted mean and a descriptive rating

of agree. Followed by indicator number 2 having a 3.01 weighted mean and a descriptive

agree. And lastly, indicator number 5 having a 2.8 weighted mean with a descriptive rating

of agree.

The data presented showed that most of the respondents agreed that because of

work immersion program most of the respondents tend to improve the way how they

speak ─ vary their tone, volume and pitch of their voice appropriately in conversation,

express their ideas clearly, speak fluently, uses jargon and technical languages when

possible, and generally not nervous when speaking to others. All of the statements agreed

that they can communicate and share their thoughts, ideas, or opinions to their co-

workers and even to their supervisors. These statements are supported by the thought

from LookUpgrade (2018) which states that the ability to share your thoughts and ideas

orally within the people around will help a person develop his interpersonal

communication skills.

The data shown that most of the respondents agreed to develop both their

teamwork and verbal communication skill during the work immersion program having a

slight difference between its weighted mean. As shown in the data above in the area of

teamwork, most of the respondents agreed they are able to work with other people

comfortably, fit into groups, and do not worry about talking to others, and they still dare to

be with groups rather than being alone. Moreover, in verbal communication, most of the

respondents agreed that their ability to express their ideas is developed, varying the tone

of their voice in different situations, and use jargon in conversations, and do not feel

nervous in speaking with other people. The improvement of their verbal communication

may be a result of working with other people, being able to develop the teamwork that

allows them to gradually improve their verbal skill.

Interpretation:

Since the r computed value of 0.456 is greater the r critical value of 0.195 with 0.05

It shows that there is a significant relationship between the perception of age classification

and teamwork. It implies that when the perception of respondents in age classification

changes, it is expected that the perception of teamwork also changes considering that it

has a substantial relationship.

Age Classification and teamwork has a significant relationship with each other.

Most of the respondents feel comfortable working with their co-workers and tend to freely

express their ideas because they believed that the work immersion program is effective

regardless of their age, and their skills we're not belittled, also the workloads are given to

them are in accordance with their age. It is because according to Cho et, al. (2015), young

Age classification and verbal communication has a significant relationship with

each other. It can be derived that verbal communication has been developed because

most of the respondents believed that the work immersion program is effective regardless

of their age. In contrary to what Larkin (2019) has said that diversity in age is a challenge

inside the workplace, most of the students believe that it was not. However, some of the

respondents believed that their age affects how their coworkers treat them which results

in them being nervous about speaking to other people. This is because of the way how

Filipino talks, keeping their respect, especially to older people to avoid misunderstanding

(LookUpgrade, 2018). In addition, according to the study made by Rahim and Tazijan

(2011) the incapability of the students to speak fluently is because of the less exposure

in communicative skills that should be practiced inside the classroom.

supervised which results in them becoming comfortable and confident working in teams.

This is because according to the University of New South Wales (2020), facilitating and

helping the group works allow the individual to monitor the current situation of a group,

the progress, and also help when it encounters challenges. Hence, allows the students

to gradually improve through time, also builds connect within its members. However,

even though their supervisors and work immersion teachers monitor them regularly that

made them perform well and feel motivated, some of the respondents are still worried

about how would they interact with others.

Student monitoring and verbal communication has a significant relationship with

each other. Most of the respondents perform well because their supervisor and work

immersion teacher frequently check on them that motivates them to do better at their

tasks which results in why their communication skills were developed. Furthermore, Black

(2018) said, that employees improve their communication skills inside the workplace

when they observe the way how their supervisor/s communicate professionally with

others. Yet, there are still some respondents who felt nervous when speaking or talking

to other people thus affects their communication skills. Because according to Miller

(2019), and Alampaya and Mechanova (2010), even though supervision give positive

effects that make an employee have a good performance, it still bring anxiousness to the

employees because they think that supervisors invade their privacy when working and/or

the company do trust them that’s why they are being monitored.

work environment is key in making your company successful and have competent and

happy employees. It helps to build a solid teamwork, do a better job and would improve

their outputs that lead to a successful team. In contrary, some students still feel awkward

each other. Despite their agreement in indicator 5 in verbal communication, some

respondents are still nervous about speaking to others because there are still some

students who disagreed that they do not feel awkwardness with their coworkers.

Moreover, most of the respondents develop their verbal communication skills —speaking

fluently, varying tone in conversations, and the use of technical language, because they

are in the well-ordered workplace. And it helps the students to grow even more because

according to the study of Maulabakhsh and Raziq (2015), creating a positive environment

tend to have happy employees who are more engaged, can do better job, lower the rate

of absentees, and less stress that will improve the performance of a person like what is

presented in the data, this allow the students to improve their verbal communication skill

Work immersion program and interpersonal communication skill has a relationship

with each other. The work immersion program plays a role in the development of

interpersonal communication skills of most of the respondents, specifically verbal

communication and teamwork because most of them agreed that regardless of being

young, still work immersion is effective. Moreover, frequent monitoring of the supervisor

and work immersion teacher motivates them to do better on their designated task, also

having a safe and comfortable environment leads to the development of the said

interpersonal communication skills. This is supported by Acar (2019) wherein he states

that work immersion allows the student to experience real workplace scenarios that result

in the acquiring of relevant skills for their specific field. Additionally, according to Hurst,

Wallace, and Nixon (2013) learning through interaction enhances the knowledge of a

person as well as leads to the engagement of students in a discussion that will improve

the students' capability to communicate well.

CHAPTER 5

This chapter presents the summary of the findings of the study, the conclusion

made, and the recommendations offered.

Summary

The data revealed that most of the respondents agreed that student monitoring

plays the highest factor for them to perform well during the work immersion program. It

shows that the respondents were checked by the work immersion teacher and supervisor,

moreover motivate them to perform well in their designated tasks. Followed by the work

environment, which states that being able to move in the workplace feeling safe and

secure, enjoying the comfortability of the workplace allows them to communicate and

work without feeling too awkward with their older comrades, the staffs. Then the least is

age classification, wherein most of the respondents agreed to that age does not hold too

much effect on their performance at work and their skills are being developed inside the

workplace without being belittled because of their age. Hence, the reason why age

classification scored the lowest because some of the respondents think that their

workloads were too hard or light for their age, also their age affects how their co-workers

treat them.

The data also shows that most of the respondents agreed to develop both their

teamwork and verbal communication skill during the work immersion program having a

slight difference between its weighted mean. As shown in the data above in the area of

teamwork, the respondents agreed that they can work with other people comfortably, fit

into groups, and do not worry about talking to others, and they still dare to be with groups

rather than being alone. Moreover, in verbal communication, the respondents agreed that

their ability to express their ideas is developed, varying the tone of their voice in different

situations, and the usage of jargon in conversations, not feeling nervous about speaking

with other people. The improvement of their verbal communication may be a result of

working with other people, being able to develop the teamwork that allows them to

gradually improve their verbal skill.

The work immersion program has a role in the development of interpersonal

communication skills of the respondents specifically verbal communication and teamwork

because most of the respondents agreed that regardless of being young, still work

immersion is effective. Moreover, frequent monitoring of the supervisor and work

immersion teacher motivates them to do better on their designated task, also having a

safe and comfortable environment leads to the development of the said interpersonal

communication skills.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the status of work immersion in the areas of age classification,

student monitoring, and work environment was believed to be important said by most of

the respondents. Whereas in the area of age classification, the researchers concluded

that the staffs are not into the “what the students can do rather what the students can

learn from their task, even though they are not disregarding most of the respondents'

age”, thus giving them a task that they can do. On the other hand, student monitoring was

implemented accordingly, and the supervisors and work immersion teacher is doing their

job on frequently monitoring the performance of students in the workplace. Hence, in the

area of the work environment, the school partner institutions are providing a good work

environment to ensure that the students can do their job with comfortability and safety,

therefore allow them to work properly. Besides, in terms of the level of interpersonal

communication skills of the students, the researchers concluded that teamwork and

verbal communication skill of most of the respondents are developed because

experiencing real workplace scenarios allows them to do so. Furthermore, the work

immersion program was able to develop interpersonal communication skills most of the

respondents.

Recommendation

Based on the findings of the study, the work immersion partner institution should

enhance the tasks that will be assigned to every student to accord it with their age,

because the findings reflect that the some of the students were given tasks that may be

too hard or light for them.

Based on the findings of the study, work Immersion teachers and supervisors

should continue to monitor their students and further guide them to thoroughly learn the

essence of the work immersion program.

Based on the findings of the study, everyone in the workplace must practice

interaction with each other to avoid awkwardness inside the workplace considering the

diversity in age.

Based on the findings of the study, the government shall continue the

implementation of the K-12 program because it helps the student to gain and improve

relevant skills such as interpersonal communication skills; verbal communication skill and

teamwork.

Based on the findings of the study, future researchers should explore other

relevant skills that can be obtained in work immersion program such as other

interpersonal skills, job skills, analytical skills, and .etc

Based on the findings of the study, this study about work immersion program and

interpersonal communication skills can be a basis for future studies.
