Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

As a prerequisite to graduate in Senior High School under the new

curriculum also known as the K-12 Program of the Department of Education,
every student must complete eighty (80) hours of work immersion. Thus, a SHS
student has to undergo this said immersion in a business organization or
establishment with work requirements related to the specialization. Through work
immersion, the students are exposed to and are familiarized with the work-
related environment related to their field.

By the light of undergoing work immersion, students can gain

opportunities that will develop themselves in the workplace while they were in a
supervised setting and also allowing the employer to evaluate their performance
and management potential. More so, students will be able to demonstrate
specific skills related to their respective field of specialization that would be
essential application to their future work environment. It also provides ideas and
real picture of the corporate world including the atmosphere of the work place,
attitude of the work force and the organizational culture that the new employees
might need to adapt and live in.

Inquiring this chosen topic, the researchers which are currently Grade 12
students can be benefitted and acquainted about this K-12 curriculum and how
they can execute their learning in the actual field. They can also consider their

findings and can use this as their guide and reference when deciding about their
career.

The Philippine Department of Education (DepEd) is currently undertaking

a series of major reforms anchored on the implementation of a new K to 12
system as it seeks to improve basic education outcomes for Filipino children and
achieve its national Education for All commitments. The Senior High School
(SHS) is the newest reform of the department which aims to better prepare the
students to pursue higher education; for employment or to manage a business.
The Work Immersion Program is one of the course requirements for SHS
graduation. A SHS student has to undergo work immersion in a business
organization or establishment with work requirements related to the
specialization. Through work immersion, the students are exposed to and are
familiarized with the work-related environment related to their field of
specialization. It is the focal aim of the immersion program to let the students
gain relevant and practical industrial skills under the guidance of industry experts
and workers; appreciate the importance and application of the principles and
theories taught in the classroom; and enhance their technical knowledge and
skills (DepEd, DO 30, 2017).

The word “Immersion” is done outside the school campus where in

students are obliged undergo. The K-12 work immersion program as a means to
develop competencies and work ethics in preparation for the real world and it’s
challenges as a part of Department of Education (DepEd) Order No. 40 series of
2015 the Senior High School (SHS) curriculum existing of 80 hours of hands on
experience. The grade 12students will undergo the said immersion to expose

them to the actual work place setting and to enrich the competencies provided by
the school head and Designated Partner Institution.

Immersion has two meanings in K to 12. The first meaning refers to a

required SHS subject in the curriculum. The second meaning refers not to a
subject but to a preferred mode of delivery of Technical Vocational (Tech-Voc)
subject.

Magno (2018) stated that they will be competent to their respective field of
interests and will they be skillful and knowledgeable enough to help suffice the
economic needs of the Philippines especially in the man power field. The
government comes up to implementing work immersion that will be conducted
depending on what the learners’ purposes or needs. And before further
discussing, I totally agree on this stand for it will be one of the key practices on
improving student performances.

Trade Congress of the Philippines (2015) stated that immersion is done

outside the school campus in a “Workplace Immersion Venue,” defined as “the
place where work immersion of students is done. Examples of work immersion
venues include offices, factories, shops and project sites.

Immersion is focuses on education and its role in shaping the future of

students in K to 12Curriculum in response to global competitiveness particularly
in ASEAN Economic Community by 2015. Ramos (2015) stated that the literature
will also discuss issues about job market, job mismatch, competitiveness and
marketability or employ ability. At this pace of this changing society and economy
a lot of actions should take place. They have to face a lot of challenges
especially educators who are being asked to do more with less due to rapidly

evolving technologies and ongoing shifts in global economy and demography. A

successful education system will need to be of paramount importance if a
multicultural society to succeed and prosper in the future. Education is a gateway
to a better job and greater earning potential. One key to understand this issue is
an appreciation of the overall land scape education and training.

When process improvement knowledge and abilities are effectively utilized

within an organization, it results in better product/service quality, customer
satisfaction and loyalty, enhanced productivity, and ultimately a faster as well as
higher return on investment.

This research seeks to tackle the assessment of work immersion in

enhancing the students’ knowledge and skills to know what are the preferences
courses they take in college and what are the best courses fit to them
accordingly to their gained knowledge and skills.

Background of the Study

Based to the study of Valley (2015) Work Immersion Program the Willow
Valley Work Immersion Program (WIP) focuses on helping young adults with
disabilities make a successful transition from school to productive adult life. This
unique one-year immersion program serves students with disabilities who are in
their last year of high school. With the goal of competitive employment, each
student receives classroom instruction and hands-on experience through
internships in as many as three departments within the Willow Valley
Communities. Through their work immersion experiences, students also develop
employ ability, social, and independent living skills Educational institutions are
expected to prepare students for employment or practice of profession. For

instance, a study on employ ability skills of business students recommended that

educational practices and activities should include those that will enhance the
skills of students in critical thinking and problem solving, systematic information
management, group leadership and motivation, and plan or project development
and implementation.

President Aquino, the different government institutions involved in

education, and Congress have since made K to 12 a reality rather than a mere
ideal.

This means a lot to all students because of k-12 curriculum work

immersion to experience a job for the first time.

One of the goals of the K to 12 Basic Education Program is to develop the

learners the competencies, work ethic, and values relevant to pursuing further
education and/or joining the world of work. To achieve greater congruence
between basic education and the nation’s development targets, Work Immersion,
a required subject, has been incorporated into the curriculum. This subject will
provide learners with opportunities: to become familiar with the work place; for
employment simulation; and to apply their competencies in areas of
specialization/applied subjects in authentic work environments. To achieve the
said objectives, Work immersion is thus a requirement for graduation from
secondary education. Learners are immersed in actual work environments such
as workshops offices and laboratories in which their prior training is relevant.
(DepEd Order No. 30 S. 2017)

Qualitative Work Immersion Programs are considered a useful instrument

that bridge between school and professional life which can be used by the school

in order to develop appropriate skills among students aimed at increasing their

employability chances on the very competitive labor market.

According to Wood & Bandura (1989) as cited in Machmud (2018) states

that perception in completing a job is self-efficacy. Moreover, self-efficacy relates
to someone's confidence in achieving his/her duties in uncertainty. While
Bandura (1997) as cited in Domenech-Betoret et al. (2017) defined self-efficacy
as “an individual’s belief in his or her own ability to organize and implement
action to produce the desired achievements and results”. Self-efficacy is one’s
faith in accomplishing task successfully. Learners automatically adjust and adopt
the new environment they are in for them to finish the immersion program while
developing their efficiency.

The study was conducted to identify the level of self-efficacy and work
immersion satisfaction and determine the degree of their relationship.

The present study is anchored on the theory of Experiential Education

Theory which states that all programs that are designed to expand the setting of
learning experiences beyond the traditional school environment to occupational
and community settings and these programs use planned experiences to
promote cooperation between traditional educational institutions and business,
industry, labor, government and community groups to support learning. This
theory was first used in 1982 and was popularized by Juliet Miller. This theory is
the researchers’ guide in determining the Challenges faced by the students in
Work immersion, because this theory explained that all programs are designed to
expand the setting of learning experiences beyond the traditional scholl
