CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Communication is a skill that you can learn. It is like riding bicycle, if you are willing to work at it then

you can rapidly move and improve every part of your life (Tracy)

Every people interact and communicate in every single day for we cannot stop expressing ourselves.

Having a good communication skills

Trade congress of the Philippines (2015), mentioned that work immersion is done outside the school

campus in a “Work Immersion Value” place. It is the place where work immersion of students is done. Offices,

factories, shops and project sites are the example of work immersion place.

According to DepEd (2017), the main goal of work immersion is to improve student’s competencies

with the help of their mentors, work ethics and values in joining the world of work. Students must not only

expose in working areas to improve their knowledge about their future careers but also to improve such

particular skills that they could use not only in the workplace but also in their life.

Base on Lucanus (2017), He said that communication is a dynamic process as it involve an interaction

between two or more people. Verbal communication and non-verbal communication are the major components

of communication. Oral communication can be express can be express through speech where it would be able to

help students in expressing their insight and it actually plays a crucial role in student’s life.

Background of the Studies

In accordance of DepEd Secretary (2017), stated that work Immersion are to expose students on the real

world of word help them to develop their skill and good work ethics. The work Immersion prepare students for

the real world by training them how to work in a company and eventually excel on a specific career Brace

(2018),
Work Immersion is the best training method since it was well organized and conduct in a place where

students will become productive and well developed (Ulanday 2019). This is because in their working area they

will learn how to manage their time and to be more knowledgeable on the task applicable at actual work. This

study is conducted because the researchers are too curious about how work immersion help students to develop

their communication skills that they can apply to their performance on their academic subject/s.

Statement of the Problem

What are the effects of Work Immersion in improving student’s communication skills on Grade 12 Student?

1.) What are the communication skills of grade 12 student?

2.) What are the effects of work immersion in improving student’s communication skills?

3.) Is there any significant difference between the communication skills of the student and

the effectiveness of work immersion?

Figure 1. Paradigm of the Study

The first box states that communication experience of Grade 12 student inside the workplace serve as an

input. The second box shows the level of work immersion effectiveness in student’s communication skills and

the researchers used survey questionnaire as a process. The last box indicate the correlational effect of student

communication skills in work immersion.

This study sought to attain Communication Skills development with regards on the perception of Grade

12 Learners on their Work Immersion.

It is supported by Forsman-Johnson (1916), theory that states that “through effective communication,

students can learn to acquire the right skill, and their ideas, concepts, and iniatives can be shaped by

communicating effectively it is supported by the theory of Eldler (2019) that started self-confidence will affect

the way they communicate”. Communication skill is part of the self-confidence so when a student have

mastered the way they communicate they will have a high level of confidence to participate in class and

improve their academic performance. Actual communication competence is measured by how well and to what

degree of interaction are achieved. Lane (2000) in improving student’s communication skill, they must have

improve some of their skills particularly in speaking skill. The effectiveness of work immersion reflect upon the

student’s ability. If a Student can easily discuss in front of the class with confident, then probably the workplace

he has been into was really effective for his growth. Work Immersion to the communication skills of student’s

perception and experience.

Definition of terms

1.) Communication Skills

- The ability to convey information to another effectively and efficiency. It is also an ability that you

can use in giving and receiving information. It involves listening, observing and speaking (Indeed,

2018)

- Communication skills will serve as the skill that will be the focus of study in the work immersion

sites.

2.) Work Immersion

- One of the subject that is required for grade 12 students before finishing their senior high school. It

specialized student’s working skill in their chosen field Briones (2017)

- Work immersion will serve as the main reason if student will improve their communication skills

or not.

- The ability to convey information to another effectively and efficiency. It is also an ability that you

can use in giving and receiving information. It involves listening, observing and speaking (Indeed,

2018)

- Communication skills will serve as the skill that will be the focus of study in the work immersion

sites.

Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of the study is to assess the overall effectiveness of Work Immersion in improving the

skills of the student in communication that will help them to develop their academic performance. This research

aims to know how work immersion can affect the communication skill of the student. To achieve purpose, this

study will examine the perception of Grade 12 students in improving the effectiveness of work immersions to

their communication skill as an aid source for their performance.

Scope and Delimitation

communication aspects.
CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

The review of related literature and studies include the general concept and views of the experts in

education and the summary of the findings of related studies, which are relevant to the present study.

Foreign Literatures

Child Success Center (2019), says communication skills academic success defend on communication

skills. Student must be able to communicate effectively. Recitation is one way students interact inside the

classroom. Answer to the given question needed to be communicated or delivered effectively so that the teacher

can see what knowledge a students have acquired.

According to Adler (2010), in the process of self-fulfilling prophecy, they explained that self-confidence of

a study will affect the way they communicate and hence compromising they put in order to perform well in their

studies since communication skills are needed in classroom like in discussions and presentations.

Lane (2000), states that students with communication skills perform better in academics, thus this is hard

to measure on students because they are unable to judge their own academic performance since confidence can

be adjusted and differs according to the situation.

Victory Christian Work Immersion International School (VCIS) (2015), denotes that students can improve

and build new skills. Work Immersion can help students in gaining new skill especially the communication

skills which set and improve their existing capabilities. Work Immersion actually brings knowledge and skills in

making student’s capability possible.

Local Literatures

According to Karekar (2018), Students learn communication skills based on their development level.

Like when they are in the kindergarten level, these include listening attentively without any interruption,

speaking clearly. At this age, students learn through verbal and non-verbal communication through group work.

As they move through primary and middle level, students expand their acquired skills through presentations,

recitations and dramatizations. These activities improve their communication skills as they communicate with

other people while doing their assign tasks.

Department of Education (DepEd) secretary Briones (2017), reveal that work immersion is an answer

character in the Senior High Curriculum. The Work Immersion started in the guidelines that will help to develop

the skill, career and life of the students.

Foreign Studies

On the study of Garrido and Gahera (2018), work immersion must be really stressful for Senior High

School Students but as it is part of the k to 12 curriculum all strand is require to have it, Knowledge relevant

learning, experiences will be the things that they could gain inside the Work Immersion site through the actual

work.

To the work immersion study of Fadil, Sumarai and Ngadiso (2018), they agree that communication

skills from the environment it can improve even verbal or non-verbal communication skills. It has been

recommended that Work Immersion site must be involved in developing both English and Non-English

Immersion that the workplace could provide to students specially in speaking.

To the study of Fortune (2015), he mentioned that work immersion has a benefit to the student such as

academic achievement, language and even their cognitive skills. Inside the workplace, students learned on how

to be a language literature and it directly affected by the workplace, then it definitely because of the

environment, and people in the worksite that surrounds him.

As stated by Henry (2011), work immersion is a good thing for students since it is one way to experience

the real world of hard work in there, they can adopt or get some techniques on how to be a good employee.

Local Studies

According to the study of DepEd, immersion program is an opportunities for student knowledge, skills

and attitude that they can apply to their chosen field. Immersion is a subject where students will be deployed in

their sites, and in there they will learn some ethics that can be very useful someday. Also on their immersion

sites one of the employee will be their mentor and they will be graded their performance.

DepEd Secretary Bersamin Luistro quoted “We want our students to be aware of the importance of

choosing a track that should suites to their interest while at the same time the available resources, as well as job

opportunities that awaits them” to gain relevant and practical industrial skills under the guidance of industry

expert and workers because when it comes, you need to communicate to your co-worker just like in school. You

can use the skill that you’ve learned in work immersion to your academic exercise.

Synthesis

Work immersion is considered a one of the most stressful subject of grade 12 learners because in this

subject they are required to be in different field in which they will experience what a real employee are doing.

Work immersion may be very stressful for them. One of those useful skills is the skills in communication that is

said to be develop base on the environment.

In able for students to be successful in academics they need to have a better skills in communication

first. To achieve the better skills in communication, it is important to have self-confidence. Self-confidence is an

advantage because this will help you both with academic performance and in communication.

Immersion is a subject where students will be deployed in their sites, and in there will learn some ethics

that can be very useful someday. Also to gain relevant and practical industrial skills under the guidance of
industry expert and workers because when it comes, you need to communicate to your co-worker just like in

school.

The work immersion stated in the guidelines that will help to develop the skills, career and life of the

students. These activities improve their communication skills as they communicate with other people while

doing their assigns tasks.

There are effect and impact that work immersion are giving to students especially a way to improve their

communication skills. Aside from effects and impacts, Work Immersion still gives benefits in both academic

and non-academic performance of students.

In gaining new skill a student could engage in their Work Immersion site which it could help them in

gaining skills particularly the communication skills that would improve their existing knowledge. Speaking

skills in one of the biggest advantage that a person could have in developing his/her communication skills which

depends on where and what immersion site they are employed. Exposing students in work immersion sites was

really helpful especially because it is the right time for them to know what could be scenario that they could

experience in the near future.

Work Immersion somehow gave impact to the student’s communication skills. Particularly the speaking

skills. If a students can speak effectively then obviously he could communicate effectively. Work Immersion

somehow gave impact to the student’s communication skills.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter discusses and presents data that were collected and the procedure that were used by the

researchers in the study, it includes the research design, population and sample, demographics, sampling

procedure, research instrument and data gathering procedure.

Research Designed

The type of research design used by the researchers was the descriptive research design in order to

determine the effectiveness of Work Immersion in improving student’s communication skills. According to

Calderon (2008), as cited by Alberto (2011), descriptive method is also known as statistical research, it

describes data and characteristics about the population or phenomenon being studies. This research method is

used for frequencies, averages and other statistical calculation. Often the best approach prior to writing

descriptive research, is conducting a survey investigation. The characteristic of the method were used as a tool

to determine if the Work Immersion can affect the communication skills of student. This method is used to

gather information in order to test hypothesis or to answer question concerning the currents of the subject of the

study.

Population and Sample

In this study, the research have chosen the Senior High School Learners of Norzagaray National High

School, specially the Grade 12 students who are deployed in the Municipal area of Norzagaray. The Grade 12

Senior High School is composed of 278 Students. Among these 278 Senior High Learners, a total of 66 learners

were chosen to be the respondents of this study.

Demographics

The total population of Senior High School Grade 12 Learners is 279. It is divided into two genders, the

male the females. In this, there are 132 females and 146 males.

The respondents of this study are the Grade 12 learners of Norzagaray, National High school that were

deployed on the Municipal area of Norzagaray. With a total of 66 students among 278 are chosen. Using the

purposive sampling. For Adler and Clarck (2008), purposive sampling is a method of non-probability sampling.

In purposive sampling, the researches is the one who chose the respondents based on the judgment to be the

population that will be studied.

Research Instrument

The main research instrument that will be used by the researchers in this study is a questionnaire in order

to gather all the data needed about the effectiveness of Work Immersion in improving the communication skills

of the grade 12 students from selected immersion site. The researchers used the format with a number 1-5 and

they will put a check mark based on level of agreement.

Construction. The researchers made the contents of the survey questionnaire based on their collaboration

of ideas from the members and information from internet and other unpublished studies.

Validation. The 3i’s teacher will validate the written survey questionnaire made by the researcher. Work

Immersion Teachers will also validate the work of the researchers.

Administration. The research instrument used by the researchers was conducted to the grade 12 Learners

that were chosen as the respondents of this study. The questionnaires are given to students in order to collect the

information and data needed.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers first formulated the questions and asked the help of their 3i’s teacher to validate the

questionnaire. After the validation process, the researchers conducted the survey by giving questionnaire to the

chosen respondents. After the survey the researchers collect and analyse then interpret the data collected.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The data gathered were treated statistically using the proposed statistical tool shown in the statistical that

CHAPTER V

Findings, Conclusions and Recommendations

This chapter presented the summary of the findings, conclusions are discussed and recommendations are

presented.

Findings

1. “The Communication Skills of Grade 12 Student”. It shows in the result the statement number 1 “I

actively listen to the speaker / reporter” ranked as the highest with a weighted mean of 4.08. and the
statement that ranked as the lowest is statement number 2 “I used non-verbal communications to others”

with a weighted mean of 2.92

2. “Effects of work immersion to the communication skills of grade 12 students”. The result shows that

statement number 1 with a weighted mean of 4.06 “I became a good listener after the work immersion”

was ranked as the highest. And ranked as the lowest was statement number 2 “I am more aware when

people use non-verbal language” with a weighted mean of 3.39

3. “Significant Relationship between the Communication Skills of a Student and the Effectiveness of Work

Immersion”. The result shows that the two variables have the pearson r value of 0.97 and interpreted as

Strong Positive Relationship.

Conclusions

1. It concludes that the students improved in their respective work immersion, where they could actively

listen to someone they are talking with. It proves that they could easily improve their communication

skills by listening to someone they are talking with that using non-verbal language.

2. Students agreed that after the work immersion they are now a good listeners. That’s why the statement

number 1 ranked as the highest, where it states that “a good listener is also a good communicator”.

Students used verbal language more than nonverbal language

3. In the high light of the findings of the study, it concluded that work immersion are effective in enhancing

student’s communications skills. In developing students skills input in the classroom alone is not

enough; it has to be supplemented with outside environment that affords students with contextualized

and real life in communicating with different people and learning experiences.

Recommendation

1. The researcher recommended that students shall let their school teacher or work immersion subject

teacher know what are the things that have improve them inside the work immersion site. In terms of

communication skills.
2. The researcher propose for work immersion that they should listen and take note of everything important

that is ever said inside the work immersion sites.
