Weightage 10
Wind load is more importantly considered in the design of steel structure as compared to
concrete structure. This is due to the fact that higher self-weight of concrete structure helps in
countering the overturning effects of wind loads. The calculation of wind load is discussed in
different design codes. It is required to work for the calculation of wind loads as per ASCE 7-16
for open steel sheds. As an example, open steel sheds are shown in the following figures.

• Review the procedure for the calculation of wind load as per ASCE 7-16 for open
industrial steel sheds. Make a flow chart to describe the ‘procedure for wind load
calculation’ (10points)
• Make a spread sheet in Excel (i) for calculation of wind pressure and (ii) for the
calculation of wind load on structures as per ASCE 7-16. It is required to automate it as
much as possible. (20+20Points)
• By using the spread sheet prepared in previous step, calculate the wind loads for an
industrial building. The plan dimension is 80x140ft. Here you have to reasonably assume
the height. The shed is open from all sides. (10 Points)
• Additional Part: compare the results with wind loads calculated by using a commercial
software. (10Points)
• The work is to be presented in a sequence in the form of a report along with Excel
sheets. (30points)
