Fault Code/ECAM Warning: SMOKE LAVATORY DET First Issue Date: 01-AUG-2002
FAULT
Model: Last Publication Date: 21-MAR-2016
Manufacturer:
Status: Closed

Issue Description
Some cases of "SMOKE LAVATORY DET FAULT" ECAM Warning associated to
Class1 "SMOKE DET LAV LOCATION XX" CMC Failure Message have been
reported on A340-600 before EIS. Each time, the triggering of the warning could
be associated to the related lavatory lighting selection (OFF/dim when not
occupied/full when occupied). Each time this warning could be cleared by a reset
of the SDCU.
Some similar cases have also been reported on A319/A320/A321, A330, and
A340-200/300.
Consequence
The smoke detection capability of the related lavatory is affected.
Investigation Status
Several tests have been carried out on production aircraft and in laboratory.
These tests have revealed that subject fault is caused by Electro-Magnetic
Interference (EMI) from the Lavatory light installation, especially when the light
is in dim-position.
Such an interaction can be experienced depending on the type of light installed in
the LAV compartment. As an example, this has been reported on some specific
'business' LAV installed on some SA aircraft.
Mitigation / Interim Plan
If a smoke detector PPA1202-00 is still installed, it is recommended to perform a
reset of the SDCU (channel 1 & 2) to clear the spurious warning. Reset is
performed by pulling the respective reset buttons (SDCU 1 and SDCU 2), and
pushing them back in after 30 seconds.
Note: If the warning is still present after 3 minutes, it is considered as a real
warning and the TSM should be applied.
Maintenance Information
Note that some operators have reported that the above mentioned warning is
only triggered when the aircraft is in the hangar. It has been evidenced that the
warning was actually linked to the aircraft lavatory light selection, hence
producing EMI on the OSD.
Solution
In order to improve the Lavatory Smoke Detector protection against EMI effect,
the internal bonding of the Smoke Detector has been improved by connection of
the Detector metallic grid to the ground of the metallic base plate.
This Smoke Detector modification has been introduced through MOD 51020 for
LR, MOD 34238 for SA, and is retrofitable. Refer to the IPC for more information
concerning the parts interchangeability. Note: for SA aircraft, Airbus SB 26-1062
has been specifically released.
At detector level, upgrade from PPA1202-00 into PPA1203-00 is covered by VSB
PPA-26-003.
