What is Data Visualisation?

The representation and

presentation of data that
exploits our visual perception
abilities in order to amplify
cognition.

Design Process (2012)

datasets designed to help
people carry out tasks more
effectively.

The ability to take data – to be able to understand it, to process it, to
extract value from it, to visualize it, to communicate it’s going to be
a hugely important skill in the next decades…

I do think those skills – of being able to access, understand, and

communicate the insights you get from data analysis – are going to
be extremely important. Managers need to be able to access and
understand the data themselves.

“There is no such thing as information
overload. There is only bad design.”
-Edward Tufte

Tufte’s Design Principles
Visualisations should be about the data
1. The visualisation should tell a story
2. The visualisation should have
integrity
3. The visualisation should minimise
graphical complexity

• The amount of information a human is trying to
process in working memory at any given time
• Goal is to reduce this!

• What is the message that the author is trying to
