Sian Ka’an currently has approximately 1,000 inhab-
itants, mostly lobster fishermen and tour-guide
operators organized in nine co-operatives. There are
also some Mayan peasant families inland, and
approximately sixty residents, fishing-club owners
and guides for sport fishermen living on private
coastal properties.
