Philip Guston
The Studio

I was originally attracted to Philip’s work because of the

color schemes that he used. I specifically liked ‘The Studio’

because I saw the canvas and thought the concept of a painting

within a painting is interesting.

I think that this piece is closer to Diego Riveria’s style

than Frida Kahlo. Philip’s artwork is more abstract than Frida’s.

Frida usually does portraits and Diego does a variety of subject

matter. Philip’s has a variety of subject as well.

These two pieces are very different, Philip’s painting

depicts a Ku Klux Klam member paining a self-portrait. Whereas

Diego’s piece is an appears to be a abstracted structure

landscape. Philip had very loose almost sloppy or childlike brush

stroke. It is very graphic and has few shadows. Diego's piece is

similar to cubism. It is blocky, solid colored, and flat. I feel

like Diego piece is likely more about cultural appreciation and

Philip’s is the opposite. He points out a terrible hate-based

group of individuals.
