Adverbs of Frequency
Always - 100% Sometimes - 40%
Usually - 80% Hardly ever - 20%
Often - 60%
Read the following sentences:
1. Josh ALWAYS gets up at 7 o´clock.
Never - 0%
5. I NEVER go to school by bus.
2. He is NEVER late for school. 6. Does he ALWAYS wear a suit?
3. My parents don’t USUALLY work on Saturdays. 7. He HARDLY EVER goes to the cinema.
4. Do you SOMETIMES take a nap on Sundays?

Adverbs of frequency are used:

 before the main verb BUT after the verb “to be”
 between the auxiliary verb and main verb in negative
sentences
 after the subject in interrogative sentences

HOW DO WE USE THEM?

Word order can be tricky with adverbs. Where do adverbs of frequency go in a sentence? At the beginning
or the end? Do they go before or after the verb? Let’s take a look at some of the rules!
Most adverbs of frequency go in the middle of a sentence, before the main verb:

+ adverb of frequency + main verb
We usually go to the cinema on Saturdays.

Basic statement: We go to the cinema on Saturdays.  If I want to let you know about the frequency (how often) we do
this, then I need to use an adverb. The main verb is ‘go’, so we put the adverb before this.

“SOMETIMES” can be used in the beginning of a sentence!

Remember! Adverbs of frequency go after the verb to be (am, Is Are)

Subject + verb to be (am, is, are) + adverb of frequency
She is always tired

THE POSITIVE FORM

 Zara always  goes out on Saturday evenings.

 Jane’s boyfriend  usually  picks her up and they drive into the city centre.

 Ben and Emma often  go for lunch together.

 In the winter Sara sometimes  goes Skiing in France.

 James and Stephen hardly ever  go to the cinema in the summer because they prefer to stay
outside.
 As Marta is so busy she  never  gets home from work before 7

THE QUESTION FORM

To make questions about frequency, we normally use ‘How often…?’. For example:

 How often  do you watch films?

 How often  does he play tennis?
 How often  do the trains arrive late?

But it’s also possible to ask questions simply with an adverb of frequency. For example:

 Do you  often come here?
