MAWO BRIDGE HEHE

The philippines deatures a large number of bridges on both local and national highways.
The department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is in charge of national bridges on
behalf of the government. Bridges are critical interconnections in a road network and are
necessary for economic development.
The Mawo bridge is over the Manuo River also is located at Northern Samar it has 280
long the said bridge was completed in 1970. In The year 2013 the government of the Philippines
requested the Government of Japan to undertake the technical assistance study to improve the
durability safety of bridges against large-scale earthquake, Mawo bridge was included in this
project and other Bridges in Manila and outside of the manila. The project is to propose a plan
for bridge improvement that will have high durability and safety. The geological investigation
done by the JICA Study Team and basically comprised of boring with standard penetration
(SPT), laboratory soil test to know the soil mechanical properties and downhole shear wave test.

II. Design Data
1. Boring
The results of boring:
One of the two boreholes was MAW-L1 (left) MAW-L2 (right) banks of the Mawo bridge.

The boring is to determine if its safe or not to build a project. Borings are carried out in
such a way that a cylinder of material is obtained from the drill hole, allowing the material
removed to be analyzed also to identifying the sort of foundations required for a building or
elevated structure, or for subsurface constructions such as tunnels and deep foundations, where
knowledge of the earth is essential in selecting how to construct and the support system.
2. The geological profile of the Mawo Bridge is shown below:

3. The soil classification samples of Mawo bridge

The soil classification is important to various reasons, example for the soil of Mawo
bridge we need to construct the foundation in such a way that this bridge is retained having
sufficient strength we can provide shallow foundations, if we know the strength of the soil, we
can decide what type of foundation should be used if the soil is weak in strength, we must
provide deep foundations. It’s not only people that are going to pass that bridge also the vehicles
so the load will be heavier that the bridge can resist.
