HEARING/ENCOUNTERING THE WORDS
“UNEMPLOYMENT” AND “UNDEREMPLOYMENT”

Unemployment
● An individual has qualifications and the will to look for employment but still not hired for
work.
● A person looking for a job.
● In between jobs.
● It can increase the rate of poverty.
● It might lead to criminal activity in order for people to make money to get through their
daily life.
● Someone of working age without work or job.
● Unable to find a job or work.
● It is due to lack of qualifications for job vacancies.
● It is due to lack of job opportunities in the industry.
● Lack of education, specifically undergraduates.
● Unemployment refers to the people who are not working and do not get paid.
● Unemployment happens when there is an overpopulation or oversupply of labor force in
certain industries.
● Idleness or lack of motivation.

Examples:
● A worker has been replaced from work due to modern machines.
● A person is not accepted on any of the job applications he/she applied to because of his
or her medical condition.
● When a company requires an experienced employee but it was the laborer’s first job.
● When a pandemic arises, the rate of unemployment increases when workers are being
let go and businesses contract during a recessionary cycle.
Underemployment
● People that are forced to work with low-paying jobs.
● Skilled workers in low-skill works or jobs.
● Having the individuals to work “part-time” hours while they seek “full-time” employment.
● Inadequate job work.
● Income inequality.
● Minimum wage.
● Poverty cycle.
● Discrimination and unreasonable job requirements.
● Not providing the sufficient hours to work.
● Happens when a job does not fully exploit an employee's abilities.
● It refers to people who have jobs but are not getting paid sufficiently.
● The people are overqualified but their qualifications are not fully used.
● A condition where someone or something is not used as much as they should be.
● An individual may work many jobs in order to support their living expenses.
● A situation in which workers are employed below their education or skill level, or their
availability.
● Unable to put their professional experience or skills to use in their current position.

Example:
● An individual with an engineering degree working as a pizza delivery man as his main
source of income is considered to be underemployed.
