Abstract

In this study, the researchers discussed the results of the campaign entitled “I Like You

Veggie Much” on the food consumption of the grade 2 students from Colegio de Sta. Monica de

Angat. The conceptual framework was also included in the study to better portray or show the

connections of the independent and dependent variable by analyzing how effective is the

independent variable and the factors contributing to the dependent variable. The researchers used

the Experimental Design because it is the best design suitable that can answer the research

questions listed in the first chapter of the research study and it determines how effective it is to

have a campaign to the food consumption of the Grade 2 students. Cluster Design is a sampling

design that the researchers used since they chose the whole population as their respondents. And

they are planning to conduct a research for a month, which will be divided into the presentation

of campaign (every Monday and Wednesday) and the collection of data (every Tuesday and

Thursday).
Chapter I

The Research Problem

Introduction

Many Filipinos, especially the farmers, are working hard just to produce foods. Everyone

needs food to prevent different kinds of diseases. According to Abbas, over the 10,000 years since

agriculture began to be developed, peoples everywhere have discovered the food value of wild

plants and animals, and domesticated and bred them. The most important crops are cereals such as

wheat, rice, barley, corn, and rye; sugarcane and sugar beets; meat animals such as sheep, cattle,

goats, and pigs or swine; poultry such as chickens, ducks, and turkeys; animal products such as

milk, cheese, and eggs; and nuts and oils. Fruits, vegetables, and olives are also major foods for

people.

Food and beverages industry identified that children and adolescents are the major market

force, so they become the target of the marketing and advertising efforts. It also stated that food

marketers are interested in youth because of their spending power and purchasing influence. These

food marketing channels include television advertising, in-school marketing, product placements,

kids’ clubs, the Internet, toys and products with brand logos, and youth-targeted promotions, such

as cross-selling and tie-ins. It also shows that the food marketed to children are often high in sugar

and fats which fits the taste of the kids (Story & French, 2004).

“I Like You Veggie Much Campaign” is a creative campaign showing the different fruits

and vegetables including the nutrients that the children can get from eating it. The researchers want

to conduct the study because they noticed that the students always chose to eat meat and other

process foods than vegetables that contains more nutrition.

They want to conduct the study because they want to know the response of the children

after watching the campaign. The researchers also want to know the effect of the campaign to the

canteen, if the vegetable viand will consume more than meat. They want to know if the campaign

will help the children to consume a much nutritious food or if the children will just ignore the

content of the campaign.

Nowadays the parents are really careful in choosing the foods their kids are eating, but the

problem is that they cannot monitor the eating habits of their children inside the school. There are

variety of foods the canteen is selling that their children might buy. The children also prepare

eating meat than leafy vegetables which contains a much more nutrition. The media also prepares

different food advertisements that can affect the food consumption of the children. Creative

healthy foods campaign can help the children become aware to the nutrition that they can get in

eating vegetables and fruits and that is what advertisements should contain.

Everyone needs to eat healthy food like vegetables and fruits so that they can get the energy

that they want for a day without feeling dizzy. They might feel dizzy sometimes because they do

not eat that may lead to fainting. Eating the right and healthy foods can prevent diseases that may

affect the body. Promoting healthy habits to the children can make a difference when it comes on

being healthy.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to identify how the campaign entitled “I Like You Veggie Much

Campaign”, can affect the consumption of healthy foods of the children since the researchers

noticed that most of the children are choosing unhealthy foods. The study seeks to find answers to

the following questions:

1. What will be the possible outcomes of the campaign?

2. What are the possible changes than can happen to the children in watching the campaign?

3. How does the campaign help the children chose the right food?

Research Objectives

General Objective

• This study aims to identify if the campaign entitled “I Like You Veggie Much Campaign”

is effective with regards to the food consumption of the Grade 2 students from Colegio de

Sta.Monica de Angat.

Specific Objectives

• To determine the effects of having the “I Like You Veggie Much” campaign to influence

the children to eat healthy foods.

• To identify the foods that the children are commonly prefer.

• To determine if the parents of the students affect their food consumption.

Significance of the Study

This study aims to understand the effectiveness of having “I Like You Veggie Much

Campaign” in the food consumption of the Grade 2 students. It is important to identify the response

of the children to the prepared campaign since the campaign is a form of advertisement that can

affect the choices of the children. The study is important to promote a healthy living starting from

a toddler.
• The study will benefit the respondents or the students for them to better understand the

value of every food that they are taking. It also helps them to make the right decision in

choosing their food, it can also change their perspectives about the vegetables and fruits.

• The parents are also the beneficiaries of this study since they are the one who are

monitoring the overall health of their children. They also the one who is responsible for the

expenses of their children when they have sick because of the lack of nutrients in the body.

It can also give them some knowledge about the food that they should feed to their children

in order for their children to remain healthy.

• The study can benefit the teachers because if the students consume much nutritious foods

there is a tendency that they can participate well in the discussion and become active in the

performances. The teacher in Physical Education can also benefit because the children can

participate on the physical activities since they ate a more nutritious food that can help

them become physically fit.

• This study benefits the future researchers because the study can give them some

background about the influence of the food campaign to the children. It can also give

some ideas about the possible outcome of the study.

Scope and Delimitation

The researchers chose the Grade 2 students from Colegio de Sta. Monica de Angat as their

respondents. The researchers chose the location because in Colegio de Sta. Monica de Angat, the

Grade 2 students were eating in their own classrooms and they were given a chance to choose or

order whatever food they want and eat it with their classmates. The children also are innocent and

can do whatever they like honestly. The exclusion of the study is the Pre- Elementary Department,
and the Grade 3 and above students because they are eating in the canteen already and the

researchers cannot manage to monitor all the foods that they may consume.
Chapter II

Theoretical Background

This chapter of the study contains the review of related literature, conceptual framework

including its brief explanation and the different hypotheses that the researchers prepare for much

easier understanding of the research presented.

Nutrition

According to Ohlhorst, et al., (2013), proper nutrition is the most effective way to decrease

the risk of the possible diseases which include obesity and malnutrition. It also cost cheaper since

it may prevent any diseases that can turn into an expenses. Nutrition research are also one of the

key to better understand the causes of obesity and it also aims to influenced the health globally

that affect the economy.

The researchers study the attitudes to food, nutrition, and health of the member of the

European Union. Some students answered that they are physically fit and they are healthy without

concerning their diet. It is also stated that lack of knowledge about the healthy foods are not a

barrier in promoting healthy living but the nutritional guidelines itself. (Raimo Lappalainen ab,

1998)

In 2009, Monteiro determined that diet usually required to eat green leafy vegetables which

contains a lot of nutrients. US Food Guide Pyramid encourage the people to eat a healthy food

which should be more desirable. The high consumption of fast food and other unhealthy foods

caused obesity and other diseases, it is also stated that education disregard the food processing and

focused mostly in the product.

Olson (1999), explores how hunger and food insecurity are related to health and nutrition

outcomes. The study focuses on women and children, they identify poverty as one of the factors

affecting the food insecurity that is the main reason for a lack of nutrition. The food insecurity may

caused obesity and the increase in body index. This may conclude that aside from eating, hunger

and food insecurity can also be a reason for a lack of nutrition.

Junk Food

In 2012, Rajveer & Monika states that junk food is popular among everyone because of its

simplicity of manufacture, consumes, and also its taste and the packaging does not require

refrigeration. The researchers also state that food can be a form of a balanced diet, but research

shows that children consume foods that contains too much fat especially salt and sugar.

The researchers study that junk foods are rich in calories, salt and fats. A lot of healthy

disorders is caused by the excess consumption of junk food. The canteen mostly sells a food high

in fat and sugar which fits that taste of the children that may also can cause infections, food

poisoning and dental diseases. Consuming a lot of junk food can also affect the consumption of

the children of healthy meals either at school or at home. The high consumption of junk foods can

widely affect the healthy lifestyle of the children. It is also stated that most of the children

consumed fast food than fruits, vegetables, and dairy products (Arya & Mishra, 2013).

Jackson P (2004), says that the junk food consumption in Chile is increasing because of

the marketing economy and diseases. Junk food is considered to be a global phenomenon since

junk food is highly consumed globally. The low price of junk food is the main reason why it is

popular than formal meal. The high snack consumption can cause obesity, tooth decay, and other

diseases. Between the year of 1977 and 1996 the consumption of snacks gets higher of 30% in the
United States which also increased the risk of chronic diseases due to high in fat,

cholesterol, sodium, and sugar. It is also concluded that the right education about the junk food

consumption should be strengthen.

Food Habits

Siddiqui & Anusha (2012), determined that food is commonly from the animals and plants

that provide energy for the body. It contains essential nutrients, such as carbohydrates, fats,

proteins, vitamins, or minerals etc. Body strength and power are from the healthy foods and

vegetables that keeps the body healthy and prevent any infections and diseases. Most of the people

prefer to eat fast food than healthy food because they do not know its value that affects their health

and lives.

In 2011, Helle Hare-Bruun states that obesity become one of the problem arises because of

the television viewing. It is stated that the advertisement that can be found in the television affect

the food habits of the children. The children have the tendency to patronize foods that are featured

in the television but the problem is, the advertisements mostly featured junk foods and fast food

which less nutritious.

The researchers conducted a research in different countries and compared the result

afterwards. They found out the some countries has a high consumption in fruits and vegetables

while some countries still consumed more softdrinks and sweets. This may conclude that every

country has their own level of food consumption and every country needs to improve the food

habits of every adolescents (Carine A. Vereecken, 2007).

Based on A.Vermeersch (1979), there are three factors contributing to the food habits

which are the food preferences, dietary complexity, and school lunch participation. Those factors
affects the nutrition education program prepared for the students in school. It is also stated that

parental and social factors can also affects the food habits of the children. This may conclude that

the parents and the peers have a big influence to the food habits of the children.

Health Campaign/Promotion

The researchers identify that health education is important for promoting health policy in

the community in order to change their views on the healthy food and fast foods. Advertisement

about health is one of a helpful strategy in promoting a healthy lifestyle and communicate to every

member of the community. One campaign was made by the Health Promotion and Health

Education Department from Constanta which entitled “Living Healthy” which contains their

messages to the community about the importance of health education (Popescu & Verman, 2015).

Prof Melanie A Wakefield PhD (2010), identified that campaigns in mass media are used

to send messages about the different risk in health. The researchers also conclude that the mass

media can produce positive changes and prevent negative when it comes to the health. An exposure

to media can also benefit the children to become healthier.

In 2007, B.Snyder identify the effectiveness of health communication campaigns to give

some knowledge to the future nutrition campaign. The nutrition campaign increses the

consumption of fruits and vegetables. The campaigns can change the nutrition behavior of every

people in the community and affect their consumption of nutritious food.

The researchers conducted a study about the common content of the advertisements and

they found out that a large percentage of advertisements advertize food that is high in fat, salt or

sugar. This may conclude that because the TV commercials usually portray foods that are

unhealthy, it influence the children’s buying behavior. (Jean Adams, 2012)

Synthesis

The findings of the study are that the attainment of good nutrition depends on and

encompasses the entire food supply. Plant and animal foods and their various components are the

primary tools that provide nourishment to human beings. Nutrition is important, not only in the

growth and development of humans and animals but also to ward off disease. Nutrition is also

fundamental to the preservation of good health and functionality.

It is also stated that food is a substance usually of plant or animal commencement

consumed to give nutritional support for the body. It contains necessary nutrients, such as

carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, or minerals etc. Consuming healthy food like fresh fruits

and vegetables provides the body strength and power to remain healthy without any infections and

diseases. In spite of knowing the importance of healthy food, most of the people prefer fast food

which affects their health and lives.

It is specified that media campaigns have been used in an attempt to affect various health

behaviors in mass populations. Such campaigns have most remarkably been aimed at tobacco use

and heart-disease prevention, but have also addressed alcohol and illicit drug use, cancer

screening and prevention, sex-related behaviors, child survival, and many other health-related

issues.

Figure 1: Conceptual Framework

The figure above shows the two main variable presented, the independent and dependent

variable. It shows the effectiveness of the “I Like You Veggie Much” campaign to the food

consumption of the students. The factors affecting the food consumption of the students are also

stated which are the price, kind of food, and the buying behavior. The kind of food is either healthy

or unhealthy but the researchers focused more on meat and vegetables. The buying behavior is one

of the factors taken into consideration in consuming, it can be the reason of the student in

purchasing the item. This framework clearly illustrates the factors involving the food consumption

of students and how the campaign affects it.

Hypotheses

Using the review of related literature as a basis the researchers assumed that after watching

the prepared campaign the alternative hypothesis will be, the pupils will know the value of eating

the right food which contains a lot of nutrients. They also have the capacity to choose eating fruits

and vegetables instead of meat if they will engrave what they watch in their hearts. They can also

gain knowledge about the different nutrition that they can get in eating nutritious foods as well as

the benefits that their body can get. On the contrary or the null hypothesis will be, the pupils may

also neglect the idea of the campaign and continuously eat fast food, junk food and meat. But the

researchers are still assuming that the campaign that they will prepare will be effective and can

change the perspective of the students to the leafy goods. They can also promote a healthy living

that should be starting from a toddler.

Operational Definitions

• Health – a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the

absence of disease or infirmity. Health may be defined as the ability to adapt and manage

physical, mental and social challenges throughout life

• Food – is any substance consumed to provide nutritional support for an organism. It is

usually of plant or animal origin, and contains essential nutrient, such as carbohydrates,

fats, proteins, vitamins or minerals.

• Nutrition - is the science that interprets the interaction of nutrients and other substances

in food in relation to maintenance, growth, reproduction, health and disease of an organism.

• Eating – is the ingestion of food, typically to provide a heterotrophic organism with energy

and to allow for growth

• Energy - the strength and vitality required for sustained physical or mental activity. A

person’s physical and mental powers, typically as applied to a particular task or activity.

• Food Choice – investigates how people select the food they eat. An interdisciplinary topic,

food choice comprises psychological and sociological aspects, economic issues, and

sensory aspects.

• Junk Food – is a pejorative term for food containing a large number of calories from sugar

or fat with little dietary fiber, protein, vitamins or minerals.

• Buying behavior- the sum total of a consumer's attitudes, preferences, intentions, and

decisions regarding the consumer's behavior in the marketplace when purchasing a product

or service.

• Campaign- is a planned set of activities that people carry out over a period of time in order

to achieve something such as social or political change.

• Disease- a disorder of structure or function in a human, animal, or plant, especially one

that produces specific signs or symptoms or that affects a specific location and is not simply

a direct result of physical injury.

Chapter III

Research Methodology

This chapter contains the methods, instruments, processes, and techniques that the

researchers will be using in order to find the effectiveness of “I Like You Veggie Much” in the

food consumption. This section allows the reader to identify the reliability and validity of the whole

research, this chapter also shows the process on how the data collected and how the researchers

will analyse the found data.

Research Design

The researchers chose the Experimental Design because it is the best design suitable that

can answer the research questions listed in the first chapter of the research. It is also determining

how effective it is to have a campaign to the food consumption of the Grade 2 pupils. The

researchers will test the independent variable to come up with the possible result. The study

became experimental because the researchers will test it by making the children watch the

campaign and gather the data about the food that they consumed after watching the campaign. The

time dimension that is suitable for the research is longitudinal since the researchers will be play

the campaign twice a week and will gather data trice a week.

Research Setting/Locale

The researchers chose Colegio de Sta. Monica de Angat as the research setting which

focuses on the Elementary Department because it is one of the school in Angat that has a huge

population of students that has a different way of consuming food. In CSMA also, the students

from lower grades are ordering their food and eating eat inside the classroom so it is easier to

collect the data.

Study Population

This study aims to test the effectiveness of the campaign to the pupils. As a causal

comparative research, the campaign will be tested in order to identify if it is effective. The

researchers chose the Grade 2 of the Elementary Department which is composed of 99 pupils as

their respondents. There are total of 93 respondents and it will be divided into sections, which is

composed of 4 sections. Grade 2A- St. Matthew is composed of 12 boys and 11 girls for a total of

23 students. Grade 2B- St. Mark is composed of 11 boys and 12 girls for a total of 25 students.

Grade 2C- St. Luke is composed of 14 boys and 11 girls for a total of 25 students and Grade 2D-

St. John is composed of 12 boys and 11 girls for a total of 24 students.

Sampling Design

Using the Cluster Design the researchers planned to use the whole target population which

is composed of 99 pupils. The respondents of the study are the Grade 2 students from Colegio de

Sta. Monica de Angat which composed of 99 pupils as they are suitable to participate in the study.

This kind of sampling design gives opportunities for all of those students to participate to the study.

Besides the number of the students are fewer compared to the other grade level and they only need

to watch the campaign which is an easy thing to do. The

Instrumentation

The researchers used structured survey questionnaire as their data collection instrument, this

will serve as a guide for the students to answer the following questions that are related to the study.

The questionnaire will be divided into two, the pre-test and the post-test. The pre-test questionnaire

has three sections, the first is the personal information of the respondents, second is the

instructions, and the main questions about the topic. On the third and last part of the questionnaire,

the researchers also used Likert Scale wherein they will choose between Almost Always (5pts.),

Usually (4pts.), Sometimes (3pts.), Rarely (2pts.) and Never (1pt.). The post-test questionnaire has
also three parts: the personal information, instructions, and main questions which is divided test

one and two, some of the questions in the post-test are same in the pre-test. The level of

measurement that is suitable for this scale is the ordinal because it will be rate by order and scored

based on the value of every answer.

Pre-testing of Instruments

The researchers chose one section from Grade 2B- St. Mark in the Elementary Department

for pre-testing that took a day. The first thing that they did in conducting a pre-testing is greeting

the respondents with a big smile in their face. After the greetings, the researchers introduced their

selves as well as the study that the researchers are conducting. The researchers also gave them

some instructions before they answer the given questionnaires. The researchers also observed their

way of answering the questions and if the respondents only copy the answers of their seatmate.

After the respondents answered the questionnaire, the researchers carefully collect it and count it

if the numbers of papers are correct. After answering the questionnaires, the researchers will now

play the first video campaign they prepared, the next day they monitored the food that the students

ordered. On the third day, the researchers play the second video campaign they prepared and

monitored the food consumption on the next day. The researchers end the pre-testing by giving

credits to the respondents by saying a simple thank you and by giving some candies as a sign of

appreciation. The pre-testing is important because it will serve as a test of what will happen in the

actual conduction of the research. The pre-testing will also show the possible scenario that will

arise while conducting a research, this will make the researchers readier.
Data Collection Method and Procedure

The researchers are planning to give a consent form to be signed by the administration of

the school and the coordinator of the grade level to find out if it is allowed to conduct a study. The

researchers will play a 2-3 minutes video containing a creative show portraying vegetable twice a

week and they will gather data trice a week.

Table no. 12: List of names from 2D- St. Luke

The researchers will get the list of the foods the pupils ordered from the assigned person,

either the teachers or the canteen staffs. After collecting all the data, the researchers will can now

determine the result of the study, if the study change the pupils’ consumer behavior or the

campaign did not influence the perspective of the students. The duration of the study will be two

weeks in order to gather a more reliable and valid data to come up to a much consistent result.

Ethical Consideration

One of the ethical standards that the researchers should consider is honesty; they should

make sure that the content of the study is truly the result that they get from the study. Openness in

criticism should also take in consideration so that the other people can advise something to the

researchers to make the study more reliable. The references should also contain the author’s

personal information to give credits. The researchers should also submit a consent letter to Ms.
Gracia Villamor the principal of the Senior High School Department and the administrator of the

Elementary Department to ask permission to conduct the research for a period of time. The ethical

standards are indispensable because it contains the traits and attitude that the researchers should

consider and the study should portray.

Plan for Data Analysis

To determine the effectiveness of “I Like You Veggie Much” campaign to the Grade 2

Elementary pupils. All the scores will be calculated with honesty and carefulness in order to come

up to the result that will answer the specific objectives of the study. The statistics that the

researchers will use are both descriptive and inferential statistics; the descriptive statistics is

suitable for the study because it can define the mean to determine the effects of the food campaign

to the students. The Inferential Statistics can also use by the researchers because this statistic is

used to compare two things. The researchers will compare the answers of the students to the pre

and post-test that will determine if the campaign worked. T-test formula will used to determine if

there is a difference between the answer of the pupils in the pre and post-test.
Chapter IV

Presentation, Analysis and Interpretation of Findings

This chapter presents, analyses and interprets the data gathered in order to answer the

research questions that is mentioned in Chapter 1. The chapter will be divided into two parts: the

first part presented the possible outcomes and changes that help the children in choosing the right

food. The last part discusses if there is a significant difference between the pre and post-test

conducted in the Grade 2 pupils of Colegio de Sta. Monica de Angat.

Chapter V

Summary, Conclusion, and Recommendations

In this chapter presents the summary of findings or the research work undertaken, the

conclusion drawn and recommendations made us an outgrowth of this study.

Summary

This research aims to identify if the “I Like You Veggie Much” campaign is effective on

the food consumption of the grade 2 pupils of Colegio de Sta. Monica de Angat. In summary, the

answer in their pre-testing has a lot more different when they answer the post- testing

questionnaires, the researchers observed and knew that the the “I Like You Veggie Much”

campaign is effective on the food consumption of the grade 2 pupils. The campaign video is all

about vegetable and the nutrients that they can get from a particular vegetable.

Conclusion

As the result of this study, in two weeks of data gathering, the campaign about vegetables

is very effective to the food consumption of the grade 2 pupils of Colegio de Sta. Monica de Angat.

“I Like You Veggie Much” campaign is a creative campaign showing different kinds of

vegetables including the nutrients that the children can get from eating it. Nowadays the parents

are really careful in choosing the foods their kids are eating, but the problem is that they cannot

monitor the eating habits of their children inside the school.

Recommendations

From these findings based on the conclusion of the study, the researchers drawn the

following recommendations for the school:

1. The school should prepare a campaign about eating healthy foods like flyers or clubs.

2. The school canteen should offer food that has less oils.

3. The school canteen should offer viands with many vegetables as one of their ingredients.

4. The school administrators can read the research to the students so that the students will be

convinced to eat healthy foods in or outside the school.

5. The parents should encourage their children to eat healthy foods like vegetables.

6. The students should know that eating healthy foods can make them energetic and healthier.

7. The future researchers should conduct a research like this because it is important to the

children to eat healthy foods so that they will not get sick and also to prevent different

kinds of diseases.

8. The researchers recommend that for the next students who plan to continue this study about

the effectiveness of “I Like You Veggie Much” campaign perceived by the Grade 12

General Academic Strand should provide their own questionnaire to differentiate the

answers from their questionnaire if the campaign is still effective to the respondents. 9.

9. Future researchers recommend to introduce another research study with factors regarding

to the effectiveness of a campaign.
