CAUSES AND EFFECT OF HOMELESS IN LONDON

INTRODUCTION:

- In recent years, and especially, during the economic recession in Spain the rate
of homeless in this country has increased at an alarming speed.

- Homeless are people who has suffer social, economic or family problems and
who wander the streets because they do not have a home or haven. parents,
friends or relatives unwilling or unable to continue to accommodate them
relationship breakdown, including domestic violence
loss of an assured shorthold tenancy.

- Effect on education (there is also children homeless):  Many children living in

temporary accommodation face long, exhausting journeys to school, and are so
tired they can’t concentrate in class. Moving into and between temporary
accommodation can cause severe disruption to schooling.
- Develop anxiety, depression and behavioural problems along the way that
has a negative effect on society as a whole because they can be aggressive
because of alcohol and drug problems.
- Long-term health problems affect employment opportunities later in life.
- They are poor, they cannot afford a living.
- Barrier to work: Poor qualifications and high support needs make it difficult for
homeless young people to find work. Welfare benefit rules also mean that young
people can be no better off in work than on benefits. Finding a job can be
particularly difficult for refugees due to the language barrier and a lack of
experience of English recruitment procedures.
- Crimes: Poverty and desperation means some homeless young people turn to
crime. This further decreases the chances of them finding work and escaping their
situation.
Homeless support service program such as homeless shelters, day centers, etc. are
costly ventures. These programs come in the form of taxpayer dollars and private
donations. Most of these programs are unfunded so not a lot are offered. The
meaning to this is that most of the homeless have to find another way for getting
their basic needs. The homeless that can’t get jobs are going to turn to the recycling
methods so they could have money in their pockets.
- Bad image to cities; they are depicted as dirty.

The cost of homelessness to the public purse is very high. This is due to a number of factors
including:
 Higher use of acute health services and the criminal justice system
 Expensive temporary accommodation
 Prolonged periods on welfare benefits
