MATERIAL SPECIFICATION
API 5L HIGH STRENGTH SEAMLESS PIPE
WITH SUPPLEMENTAL IMPACT REQUIREMENTS

1.0 SCOPE
This specification controls API high strength seamless line pipe. API 5L, PSL 2, grades X42,
X46, X52, X60, X65, X70 and X80 to the applicable “N” and “Q” conditions are represented in this specification.

Pipe to dash -17 of this specification includes requirements to comply with Total specification
GS PLR 201 Rev 02 and NG50-3-200-ENG-SP-AB-00-2013 Rev 1

2.0 MANUFACTURING CONTROLS

2.1 Method of Manufacturing


The different grades of seamless pipe shall be produced in accordance with this specification. The pipe shall
conform to the requirements specified in API 5L, PSL 2 including manufacturing, hydro testing, inspection,
qualification testing and non-destructive testing as modified by this specification.

2.2 Heat Treatment


The supply condition of the pipe shall be in accordance with this specification and shall either be normalized,
normalized and tempered, or quenched and tempered, with the exception of all grade X56, X60, X65, X70 &
X80 which shall be quenched and tempered only.

3.0 MATERIAL PROPERTIES

3.1 Chemical Composition


The pipe shall possess the appropriate chemical composition as listed in Table 2, except as modified by the
dash number. Composition based on heat and product analyses (% maximum). See Table 4a for dash
number -17 chemistry requirements.

The CEIIW max. = 0.43%; CEPcm max = 0.25% unless otherwise dictated by specific dash numbers.

NOTE (1): For each reduction of 0.01% below the specified maximum of Carbon an increase of 0.05%
above the specified maximum of Manganese is permissible up to a maximum of 1.65% for X42
thru’X52; 1.75% for X56 thru’X65; 2.00% for X70 and 2.20% for X80.

3.2 Mechanical Properties


In accordance with this specification, the various grades of pipe material shall have the mechanical properties
as represented by Table 3.

Specific requirements for Dash -17, with respect to Total specification requirements are detailed in
Table 4b.

3.3 Dash Number -17 Chemical Composition


The following lists the appropriate chemical composition requirements for dash -17 X65Q pipe only.
Composition based on heat and product analyses (% maximums shown).

The CEIIW maximum shall be 0.39%. The CEPcm maximum shall be 0.22%.

NOTE (1): For each reduction of 0.01% below the specified maximum of Carbon an increase of 0.05%

3.4 Dash Number -17 Mechanical Properties


The following lists the specific mechanical and hydrostatic test requirements for dash -17 X65Q pipe only.
Tensile, Charpy Impact and CTOD testing will be performed in both longitudinal and transverse orientations.

NOTE (1): Charpy impacts and CTOD fracture toughness to be tested in both longitudinal and transverse
orientation.

NOTE (2): Longitudinal % Elongation shall be derived from a full thickness strip using API gauge length. The
transverse test will be derived from a round bar specimen.

NOTE (3): The average shear value of the fracture appearance of three specimens.

NOTE (4): The actual yield stress in the longitudinal direction shall not exceed SMYS by more than
120 MPa.

NOTE (5): Each pipe shall withstand a test pressure that produces a fibre stress equal to 90% SMYS based
on the nominal wall thickness. The hold time will be not less than 10 seconds and the water de-
aerated.

NOTE (6): Longitudinal tensile yield stress at 100°C test temperature shall show a maximum de-rating of 30
MPa from the minimum room temperature SMYS.

3.4.1 CTOD testing (at -18 C test temperature)
CTOD testing shall be carried out on pipe with wall thickness greater than 13mm. Testing shall
comply with DNV OS-F101 (2010) Appendix B A900. The measured fracture toughness of the pipe
shall as a minimum have a CTOD value of 0.2mm when tested at the design temperature indicated
above.

3.4.2 Macro Examination


Two macro-sections shall be cut, one from each end of the pipe. They shall be polished and etched to
show the metallurgical microstructure. Photo-micrographs shall be taken at a magnification between
100x – 500x from just below internal surface, at mid-thickness, and just below external surface and
supplied with the certification. No banded structure, untempered bainite, or untempered martensite
shall be present in the steel microstructure.

3.4.3 Hardness Testing


On each macro-section, three Rockwell C or Vickers 10 Kg hardness measurements shall be carried
out (one 2mm below outer surface, one 2mm below inner surface and one mid-wall). Hardness shall
not exceed 248 HV10 (22HRC).

4.0 CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


Whenever "if applicable" appears below, verify that the operation/test is required by the material specification - if it
is, then certification is required.

 Certification of Compliance - Certification shall include certification to the requirements of the material
specification and the heat treat requirements. The MS and revision shall be included on certifications.

 Material Description - Certifications shall include description of the material including: material grade,
product configuration, size and quantity.

 Material Heat Number

 Material Chemistry - Certification shall include actual chemistry per heat or remelt ingot.

 Chemistry Carbon Equivalency - Certification shall include actual CEIIW or CEPcm results (as applicable).

 Material Heat Treatment - Certifications shall include actual temperatures and times at temperature for each
heat treat cycle, quench media type and temperature monitoring method.

 Heat Treat Lot Identification - Certification to include heat-treat load identification. If serialization marking of
material is employed instead of heat treat load, certifications shall indicate the serial numbers included in
each heat treat load.

 Test Results - Results of all mechanical testing.

 QTC Description - Certifications shall include the configuration and size of the QTC, and location of test
sample removal.

 QTC Heat treatment - Certifications shall include actual temperatures and times at temperature for the QTC
heat treat cycle, quench media type, and temperature-monitoring method.

 QTC Hardness - Certifications shall include the actual hardness of the QTC after final heat-treating and prior
to cutting the tensile and impact specimens.

 QTC Tensile Test Results - Certifications shall include ultimate tensile, yield, elongation and reduction in
area. It is required that the tensile specimen size be included only if the specimens were other than standard
0.500" dia. with 2" gage length.

 QTC Impact Results - Certifications shall include impact test results for each specimen and include the
orientation (if other than longitudinal) and test results. It is required that the impact specimen size be included
only if the specimens were other than standard 10mm X 10mm.

 Hydrotesting – Certification shall include a statement of hydrotesting conformance (as applicable) according to
APL 5L requirements. The statement shall include the actual test pressure and test duration.

 Dash 17 Certification Requirements – Certification for all material according to the Dash 17 requirements shall
be in accordance with the stated testing in Section 3.2 Table 4 of this specification. All required testing and
results shall be stated on the certification.
