1. Scope:

1.1 This specification is for 2-1/4 Cr-1Mo (ASTM A182, F 22 modified) material sizes up to 20”
in diameter.

1.2 This material meets the requirements of NACE MR0175 /ISO 15156.

3. Requirements:

3.1 Material:

3.1.1 Melting Practice: The steel shall be made using fine grain practice using one of
the following methods.

3.1.1.1 Basic Oxygen Furnace followed by Vacuum Degassing (BOFVD) or Argon


Oxygen Decarburization (BOFAOD).

3.1.1.2 Electric Furnace (EF) or Electric Furnace followed by Vacuum Degassing


(EFVD) or Argon Oxygen Decarburization (EFAOD).

3.1.1.3 Vacuum Induction Melting (VIM).

3.2 Chemical Composition: Shall be as follows:

Note: *As residual elements, these need not be reported provided they comply with the
chemical requirements.

3.3 Heat Treatment:

3.3.1 Heat treating equipment qualification and calibration:

Furnaces shall be calibrated no less than once a year or when a furnace is moved,
repaired or rebuilt. The practice for qualification of heat-treating equipment shall be
one of the following:

3.3.1.1 API 6A annex for qualification of heat-treating equipment or other


equivalent internationally recognized standard.

3.3.1.2 Manufacturers’ written specifications including acceptance criteria, which


are not less stringent than the procedures identified above.

3.3.2 Temperature monitoring:

The material temperature shall be measured by use of either a contact surface


thermocouple or a heat-sink as described in API 6A, ISO 10423 or equivalent
international standard.

3.3.3 All heat treatment shall be carried out in accordance with written procedures.
Temperature, time at temperature and method of cooling must be reported for each
cycle.

3.3.4 The quench media shall be one of the following:

3.3.4.1 Oil
3.3.4.2 Polymer

3.3.4.3 Interrupted water, water or other water equivalent quench

3.3.5 The temperature of the water or the quench media with cooling rate approximately
that of water shall not exceed 400C (1040F) at the start of the quench. For bath
type quenching, the temperature of water or equivalent quench media shall not
exceed 490C (1200F) at the completion of quench.

3.3.6 The temperature range for other quenching media shall meet manufacturer written
specification.

3.3.7 If the heat treatment is carried by sub-supplier, heat treater shall ensure the
compliance of mechanical properties established in section 3.4.

3.3.8 Heat Treatment Procedure:

3.3.8.1 The material shall be supplied in the quench and temper or normalized
quench and tempered condition.

3.3.8.2 Optional: Normalize at 1725-17750F (941-9680C) followed by air cool or


faster.

3.3.8.3 Austenitize at 1675-17750F (913-9680C) followed by water or polymer
quench.

3.3.8.4 Temper at 1100-13000F (593-7040C) followed by air cool or faster.

3.4 Mechanical Properties:

After quench and temper heat treatment, a tensile test and three Charpy tests shall be
performed in accordance with ASTM A370 on each heat of material. The sample shall be
taken from mid-radius in the case of a solid bar or at the mid-wall in the case of a hollow.

Custom forgings require mechanical tests from a prolongation per API 6A. The results
shall conform to the following:

3.5 NDE:

3.5.1 All NDE instructions are to be approved by a Level III Examiner. The person
performing the NDE shall be qualified in accordance with ASNT: Recommended
Practice SNT TC-1A Level II minimum. A copy of the person’s qualifications

performing the NDE shall be on file at Supplier or a copy shipped with the parts.

3.5.2 Ultrasonic examination must be performed per NDE-31.

3.6 Material Quality:

The material shall be free of injurious seams, laps, or other visual imperfections, which,
due to their nature, will interfere with the use of the material in heat treating, machining,
or fabrication of suitable parts.

4. Documentation and Retention:

Supplier records involving this specification must be auditable / retrievable for a period of five (5)
years from the date that the raw materials were certified. Supplier should submit the copy of
following documents along with certification package.

4.1. Supplier should submit the copy of following documents along with certification package,
unless otherwise instructed by a Schlumberger specification.

4.2. Copy of the original mill test certificate from producing mill.

4.3. Copy of actual chemical composition (heat analysis) of the material which lists all of the
elements specified in paragraph 3.2.

4.4. Copy of mechanical properties. Test results must meet the requirements of paragraphs 3.4.

4.5. Statement of compliance of heat treatment as per 3.3

4.6. Statement of compliance of Ultrasonic examination per section 3.5.

4.7. Statement of compliance from mill or supplier conforming compliance with this specification
(by number) and the Schlumberger Purchase order (by number and line item number).

4.8. All documentation generated by this specification shall be retained in accordance with
procedure QA-31.
