Specification for Cold Drawn, Butt
Welded Steel Mechanical Tubing

1. SCOPE

JDM A27 specifies the standard requirements for cold drawn, butt weldeda carbon steel round, square,
rectangular, and special shape mechanical tubing of the types shown in Table 1.

JDM A27 Annex A provides information on sizes and shapes for which the dimensional tolerances are
specified.

2. DESIGNATIONS

2.1 TYPE. The type of tubing conforming to this specification is designated by the JDM number
shown in Table 1. “”

2.2 SPECIAL PROPERTIES AND COMPOSITION. If special properties or composition are requlrecf,
the grade designation from ASTM A512 or the JDM number from JDM AO IS shown followlng the type
designation

NOTE: Tensile properties (or hardness) of round tubing are specified In ASTM A512 for a
selectlon of composition grades (e.g., Includlng MT 1020 and 1025) but not for all available
grades (e.g., not lncludlnj 1026j -

3. REQUIREMENTS

Unless otherwise specified, the standard requirements of the latest relevant ASTM standard shall
apply for all points not taken up In this JDM specification. Supplementary and special requirements,
if any, shall be as specified.

The tubing shall conform to ASTM A512, except that electric resistance weld may be substituted for
butt weld at the option of the supplier providing that all other specified requirements are met.

3.1 CHEMICAL COMPOSITION. The chemical composition shall conform to ASTM A512 or, when
so designated, to JDM AO. If no grade IS specified, grade MT 1010 per ASTM A512 shall be furnished.
The heat analysis or the product analysls and the methods used for analysis shall be reported to the
purchaser.

3.2 THERMAL TREATMENT. Unless otherwise specified, the tubing shall be stress relieved,

3.3 MECHANICAL PROPERTIES. Unless otherwise specified, round tubing shall conform to the
tensile requirements (and not necessarily the hardness limits) specified in ASTM A512. Any mechan-
ical properties requirements not specified in ASTM A51 2 shall be as agreed between the purchaser
and the supplier. The test data and the methods of testing for required mechanical properties shall be
reported to the purchaser.

3.4 FLARING TEST. Round tubing shall withstand the flarlng test described in Supplementary Re-
qulrernent S3 of ASTIM A512 without any surface cracking.

3.5 ENDS. Unless otherwise specified, ends of round tubing shall be square cut within the toler -
ante for squareness of cut specified in ASTM A513.

DIMENSIONAL TOLERANCES. Round, square, and rectangular tubing shall conform to the per-
missible variations in dmenslons specified In ASTM A5 12. For special shape tubing. and for tubing
outside the size range specified in ASTM A51 2, the dimensional limits shall be as agreed between
the purchaser and the supplier.

3.7 PROTECTIVE COATING. Unless otherwise specified, the tubing shall be coated to prevent ex-
cessive rusting for 100 hours when tested per ASTM D1 748. The coating shall be removable by an
aikallne or organic solvent cleaner.
