3.1.3 Heat treatment:

3.1.3.1 Heat to 1550-1600F (843-871C) and hold for one hour/inch of

heaviest cross-section or wall.

3.1.3.2 Oil, water or polymer quench to below 300F (149C). When water
quench is used, 100% ultrasonic inspection per NDE-31 is required.

3.1.3.3 The temperature of the quench medium shall not exceed 100°F (40°C)
at the start of the quench cycle and shall not exceed 120°F (49°C) at
the end of the quench cycle.

3.1.3.4 Temper at 900-1200F (482-650C) for one (1) hour/inch of heaviest

cross section or wall.

3.1.3.5 For mill and supplier heat treatment: Austenitize, Quench and Temper
per the vendors internal practices to meet the mechanical properties
described in 6.1.3 (Minimum tempering temperature 900°F). Water
bath quenching shall be followed by appropriate NDE practices to
detect and reject any cracked material.

3.1.3.6 Forging and heavy wall stock under following conditions must be rough

Schlumberger Private
machined (trepanned) before heat treatment (quenching & tempering)

3.1.3.6.1 4140Mod: solid bar diameter greater than 7.0 Inch (178 mm)
3.1.3.6.2 4145Mod: solid bar diameter greater than 8.5 Inch (215 mm)

3.1.3.7 To ensure mechanical properties through entire section, the maximum

recommended wall thickness during heat treatment is 2.75 Inch (70
mm) for 4140 Mod and 3.0 Inch (76 mm) for 4145 Mod.

3.1.3.8 For bars that will trepanned after heat treatment, if mechanical
properties meet at the ID location of the component to be made, then
re-heat treatment of the trepanned bar is not necessary.

accordance with ASTM A-370 and shall conform to the following:

Property Requirement

Tensile Strength, ksi (MPa), min 140 (965)

Yield Strength, ksi (MPa), min 125 (862)

Elongation, % in 4D, min 16

Reduction of area, %, min 35

Hardness, (HRc) BHN, Range 30-36 (285-341)

using ER (Equivalent Round) model as described in API 6A section 5.6.2 and
tested per ASTM A370. Some rough-out or forging drawings may detail a
prolongation for extracting the test sample. For bars or tubes produced at a
mill, samples shall be taken as stated in paragraph 3.1.4.1 below.

3.1.4.1 The hardness and tensile specimen shall be taken from mid-radius for
solid bars or mid wall for hollow bars.

3.1.4.2 Raw material inspection hardness test shall be taken on the surface.

3.1.5 Material Quality:

The material shall be free of injurious seams, laps, or other visual

imperfections, which, due to their nature, will interfere with the use of the
material in machining, or fabrication of suitable parts.

3.1.6 NDE Requirements:

Prior to final machining, material must be inspected by Ultrasonic Inspection

per ASTM E428 or ASTM A388 in accordance with the requirements of API
14A section 6.12.5.e (or NDE-31 is UT performed at mill). All NDE instructions
to be approved by a Level III Examiner. The person performing the NDE shall
be qualified in accordance with ASNT: Recommended Practice SNT TC-1A
Level II minimum. A copy of the person’s qualifications performing the NDE
shall be on file at SRC or a copy shipped with the parts if a contract forger
produces material.
