DQ: 4. What are the six key inputs to a healthcare HR strategic plan?

Introduction

Strategic planning is the base of the success of an organization to maintain and grow the

business. Every organization and industry wants to recruit and retain talented personnel to meet

the organizational vision in long run and mission and goal in near future or in short time span.

For this HR managers plan, organize, lead and control the activities to achieve the organizational

objectives to meet their goals. They work on the employee retention, settings of pay rolls,

compensations and rewards, employee relations, developing code of conducts policies and so on.

Acquisition of highly educated personnel is not an exception but in healthcare HR management

is a challenging factor. To recruit and retain experienced personnel is very expensive and time

taking tasks for being competitive in the healthcare industry.

In present competitive environment healthcare HR managers need to make a strategic

plan with having six key inputs i.e. become larger, be where the consumers are, customer/patient

satisfaction, focus on smart staff management, cultivate referrals and ability to invest to compete

and maintain the position in the healthcare industry by increasing revenue as well.

1. Become Larger
One of the most important inputs of strategy planning is to become larger in the

industry. In the healthcare industry to generate maximum revenue and maintenance the

growth of the organization by providing best services and patients satisfaction is very

important. For this healthcare HR manager are connecting to other healthcare providers

by making partnerships, signing joint venture and merger to enhance their economy of

scale and bargaining power to control the cost. This tactic gives them competitive

advantage in the industry.

2. Be Where the Customer/Patients are

To get competitive advantage now healthcare manager are occupying the geographical

space. Healthcare leaders have considered it as their strength not a thread. They are

providing services to patients through telemedicine and by creating small walk in

healthcare units to minimize the emergency visits.

3. Leave the Customer/Patient Satisfied

Healthcare HR managers are using marketing tool by publishing their patients

satisfaction using technology and IT software. By using diagnostic software and

technology healthcare practitioner can get ample time to coordinate with their patients.

For this awareness with the advance technology is the demand of the time.

4. Focus on Smart Staffing

To find expert and experience personnel in healthcare industry is a time taking and

costly process. So healthcare manager are using smart staffing techniques to gain the

competitive advantage. They are using job rotations techniques to train their personnel

for smart utilization at times of need.

5. Cultivating Referrals
One of the key inputs of strategy planning is cultivating the referrals for competitive

advantage. Healthcare HR manager transfer or refer patients to their other valuable

partners to streamline the patients flows. They use survey reports and feedback of

satisfied patients with quality patient care. Patients admission, scheduling appointments

and discharge procedures can be used for SWOT analysis to see the competitive

advantage of the healthcare organization.

6. Ability to Invest

A healthcare organization cannot invest in strategy planning for competitive

advantage without having more or surplus profit. More surplus and profit allows

healthcare HR manager to invest more for competitive advantage strategies but low

revenue decrease the ability to investment in business. Therefore, their competitive

advantage will start to go downwards. For large investments healthcare HR managers

focus at actual usage of expenses and cash flow. To minimize the cost and expenses they

should lease or rental some of their staff services can be an effective strategy for

competitive advantage.
