MESSAGE TO THE LEARNER

Good day! This module is wholeheartedly designed and crafted for you, our dear Grade 7
learners.
This module presents a systematic approach to learning English with the goal of achieving
and mastering the competencies specified under the Most Essential Learning Competencies
(MELCs).
You are expected to accomplish all the activities by yourself. However, if you need
assistance, feel free to ask your English teacher or your guardian at home.
Specifically, this will help you understand and further develop your writing and speaking
skill which are considered essential language macro skills. It will help you identify and use the
passive and active voice meaningfully in varied contexts.
Read the module carefully and answer the activities. Have fun learning English!

OBJECTIVES

Learning to express yourself both in writing and speaking is a necessary skill as you explore
more. There will be instances where you will need to speak and write, thus, knowledge of grammar
is important. As learners of English, you are then encouraged to pay attention to some grammar
rules so you could fully engage in a meaningful conversation. In this lesson, you will be introduced
with the Active and Passive Voice and how you can express yourself in using the two voices of
the verb.

After going through this module you are expected to:

• Use the passive and active voice meaningfully in varied contexts(EN7G-III-c-2)

Specifically, you should be able to:

a) distinguish active voice from passive voice;

b) familiarize how active and passive voice are formed;
c) change sentences from active voice to passive voice and vice-versa; and
d) construct meaningful sentences using active and passive voice.

1
PRE-TEST

A. Identify whether the sentence is in ACTIVE or PASSIVE Voice.

_______________ 2.Rosenda received a secret love letter yesterday.

_______________3. The cake was eaten by the kids.

2
I. LET’S RECALL!

Before we learn and explore the active and passive voice of the verb, let us recall our
previous lesson on genres of viewing. Write in your notebook the things you remember about
our previous lesson.

Genres of Viewing

Movie clip-

Movie Trailers-

News Flash-

Weather forecast-

Internet –based programs-

Documentary videos-

Try to answer this on your own. You may browse your notes for your reference. We believe
that you could easily recall our previous lesson. ☺

3
II. LEARNING SOMETHING NEW!

Most of the time, we will be asked to write essays or speak in front of an audience.
There are instances where we will discuss a certain topic, describe an object or
phenomenon, inform others on current issues, and a lot more. This sharing, written or
spoken, needs to follow certain grammar standards. Learning what needs to be emphasized
in your sentence-- the subject doing the action or the action itself-- would help you
construct meaningful sentences. Your knowledge of creating sentences in the active voice
or passive voice could help you a lot!

III. LEARNING TOGETHER!

As we go through the lesson on active and passive voice, take note of the following.
Your knowledge of subject, verb, and object will be needed as we go along the lesson on
active and passive voice.

Subject (S)- someone or something that is being

talked about in a sentence and the one that does the
action

Verb (V)- is an action word which the subject does

Object (O)- the receiver of the action

Ex. We submitted our modules on time.

S V O

Now, you are ready for our main lesson—the ACTIVE AND PASSIVE VOICE.

In grammar, voice means a verb form that shows the relationship between the participants
in a narrated event, subject, object, and the event itself.

4
Basically, we have two kinds of voices. These are the active voice and the passive voice.
You can express your thoughts in any voice depending on what you need to emphasize. You use
active voice when you emphasize the doer of the action. On the other hand, you may use passive
voice when you want to emphasize the action itself.

Study the following:

ACTIVE VOICE

In most English sentences with an action verb, the subject does or performs the action
denoted by the verb.

These examples show that the subject is doing the verb's action.

1. The students passed the learning modules.

The students (subject) are doing the passing (verb)

2. Michael sent the package.

Michael (subject) is doing the sending (verb)

3. The children play in the fields.

The children (subject) are doing the playing (verb)

The sentences are said to be in the active voice when the subject does or performs the
action or verb in the sentence.

How to Construct a Sentence in Active Voice

Remember this pattern: Subject (S) + Verb (V) + Object (O)

Example: Daisy writes short stories and poems.

Daisy = Subject (the one who does the action)

writes = Verb (the action that the subject does)

hort stories and poems = Object (the receiver of the action “writes”)

= An Object answers the question “what”

What are written? Answer: short stories and
poems

5
PASSIVE VOICE

One can change the normal word order of many active sentences (those with a direct
object) so that the subject is no longer active, but is, instead, being acted upon by the verb -
or passive.

Note in these examples how the subject-verb relationship has changed.

1. The learning modules were passed by the students.

The learning modules (subject) were being passed (verb)

2. The package was sent by Michael.

The package (subject) was being sent (verb)

Because the subject is being "acted upon" (or is passive), such sentences are said to be in
the passive voice.

How to Construct a Sentence in Passive Voice

Remember this pattern: Subject (S) + Helping Verb (V) + Past Participle + by + Object (O)

Example: The proposal was drafted by Rica.

The proposal (Subject) + was (Helping Verb) + drafted (Past Participle)

+ by + Rica (Object)

Note: There are cases where object is not needed nor stated in the passive voice.

Example: My phone was stolen. (No object)

My phone (Subject) + was (Helping Verb) + stolen (Past Participle)

6
How to Change Active Voice to Passive Voice

To change an active voice sentence to a passive voice sentence:

1. Make the object of the active sentence into the subject of the passive sentence.
2. Use the verb “to be” in the same tense as the main verb of the active sentence. If the tense
of the main verb is present, helping verb must be present, if past tense, the helping verb
must also be in the past tense.
3. Use the past participle of the main verb of the active sentence.

Study the following examples:

Active Voice: My mother cooks delicious adobo.

Passive Voice: Delicious adobo is cooked by my mother.

Note: The verb in the Active Voice (cooks) is in the present tense so we use the same
present tense (is) plus Past participle (cooked) plus by (by my mother) in the
Passive Voice.

Active Voice: My mother cooked delicious adobo last night.

Passive Voice: The delicious adobo was cooked by my mother last night.

Note: The verb in the Active Voice (cooked) is in the past tense so we use the same
past tense (was) plus Past participle (cooked) plus by (by my mother) in the Passive
Voice.

Active Voice: My mother will cook the delicious adobo.

Passive Voice: The delicious adobo will be cooked by my mother.

Note: The verb in the Active Voice (will cook) is in the future tense so we use the
same future tense (will be) plus Past participle (cooked) plus by (by my mother) in the
Passive Voice.

7
How to Identify Active Voice from Passive Voice

1. Identify the subject (the doer of the action).

2. Locate the main verb (the action that the subject does)
3. Examine the relationship between the subject and the main verb.

Note:
If the subject performs the action of the main verb, then the sentence is in Active
Voice. If the subject sits there while something else –named or unnamed—performs an
action on it, then the sentence is in Passive Voice.

IV. LET’S DO IT!

V. WRAP IT UP!

✓ With Active Voice, the sentence follows a clear and direct pattern: Subject
+ Verb + Object. The Subject is the doer of the action or the main verb.
You may not realize this, but most of our sentences are stated in Active
Voice.
✓ Passive Voice, on the other hand, has the subject being acted upon by the
verb. We usually use this voice when the doer is unknown, unimportant,
irrelevant, or vague. We also use this when we want to emphasize the
person or thing acted on.
