1.0 Introduction

Zoo Negara Malaysia is the first local zoo for Malaysians, which was founded and managed by a
non-governmental organization called Malaysian Zoological Society. Zoo Negara first opened its
doors on 14th November 1963 and has eventually grown into a well-known zoo all over the world.
There are approximately 5137 specimens representing 476 species of mammals, birds, reptiles,
amphibians, and fish have been collected. Zoo Negara is located about 5 kilometers from Kuala
Lumpur and comprises 110 acres of land. The zoo has evolved into an open concept zoo, with over
90% of its species housed in large exhibits with naturalistic landscapes (zoonegaramalaysia, 2021).
Due to the occurrence of COVID-19 pandemic, the team is required to design and create an
interface walkthrough prototype that represents the application in this project to assist Zoo Negara
in restoring their normal operation.

2.0 Problem Statement

The national zoo of Malaysia known as Zoo Negara is undeniably one of the national treasures
and tourist attraction locations of the country. However, the occurrence of COVID-19 pandemic
has directly influenced the economies of several industries in Malaysia, especially the travel
industry(Razak, 2020). In this situation, zoo negara is considered as one of the affected industries
because it is one of the famous tourist attractions in Malaysia. Due to the enforcement of movement
control order (MCO) in 2020, zoo negara is facing difficulties in paying the operating costs. In
fact, the relevant authority of Zoo Negara has mentioned that they are using emergency funds to
cover their operation costs during MCO (Bernama, 2020). Hence, Zoo Negara may reduce their
staff to reduce the operating costs in the meantime. In this case, they may face another issue which
is lack of staff when the zoo is reopened. However, the financial status of the Zoo Negara may not
afford to employ new staff to restore the previous operation style. Besides, social distancing will
be another concerned issue if the staff is increased. Therefore, Zoo Negara can approach the new
operation style by utilizing the zoo navigation mobile application that provides interactive
navigation for the tourists to resolve the issue of lack of staff and maintain the operating cost.

Besides, tourists and visitors are unable to get a hold of complete information of Zoo Negara
regarding the exploration environment as well as what it has to offer. Although the visitors have
the options of accessing the online website and mobile application that are being made available,
several flaws can be pinpointed based on these internet-based mediums. From the online website
standpoint, the current layout design is being perceived as less user-friendly and appealing because
all the wordings and majority of the graphical images and video clips for display are very compact,
making it hard for the users to view the information clearly and being required to make hassle
attempts of zooming in and out of the website. As for the mobile application that is presently
available for download in the Google Play Store, the information relating to the Zoo Negara is
even lesser as compared to the online website, consisting only of the basic particulars such as
opening hours, location address and social media details (GooglePlay, 2022). Visitors are also
unable to book their zoo entrance ticket via the mobile application and must go through the online
website, which may be difficult for certain users who are accessing the website via their small
screen smart devices. Additionally, the present interactive walkthrough does not provide a
satisfactory interactive navigation experience as the process of viewing and rotating the 3D

location view of the zoo is very cumbersome and the lack of GPS location tracking will lead to
visitor users from not being able to identify their current location or halfway through their journey
instantly even with the use of the zoo location view.

3.0 Objective of the application

The objectives of developing this application are:

● To provide the tourist an opportunity to virtually interact with the animals through
interactive walkthrough.
● To present the information of facilities and animals in a structured and more user-friendly
way.
● To present the detailed information of each facility and animals with the operating hour
and its own description.
● To assist the tourist in discovering their desired destination with the interactive navigation.
● To reduce the operation costs of Zoo Negara.

4.0 Solution

Today, smartphones are owned by most people in society. Hence, the team has proposed a zoo
navigation mobile application for Zoo Negara Malaysia. The team should ensure that the
application can be used to interactively navigate the way around the area by knowing the layout of
the zoo. Below are the proposed functions for the zoo navigation mobile application.

● Show Event
○ Users will be notified through the application when there is any live event or
activity that is held by the zoo.
○ Any videos or photos of the live events and activities that are taken by the users
could be uploaded and downloaded through the application in order to attract more
users who are interested in animals.
● Operation Hour
○ Allow users to view the operation hours of Zoo Negara
○ Allow users to distinctively view the visiting hours of species type or a particular
wildlife.
○ Allow users to view the opening hours of other necessity areas such as Restaurants,
Souvenir Shops and Surau.
● Ticket Booking
○ Allow the users to choose a date
○ Allow the users to select numbers of visitors
○ Allow the user to select a payment type
○ Allow the user to access online ticket details
● Map Navigation
○ User will be suggested the route when they choose the particular destination
○ Check the current location of the tourism
○ Calculate the distance from the tourist’s current location to the chosen destination
● Gallery
○ Allow the users to search for types of animal
○ Display the photo and video of the animal
○ Display the animal details (Example: Type, Age, Brief Description)
