Reading Enrichment Unit : Lesson #1

Grade: SECOND Date: Time: 45 minutes

Georgia Standard of Excellence:

ELAGSE2RL3 Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and
challenges.

AASL National School Library Standards:

III. Collaborate- B. Create- Learners participate in personal, social, and intellectual
networks by: (2) Establishing connections with other learners to build on their own
prior knowledge and create new knowledge.

Materials: Objectives:
-Walter the Farting Dog I can discuss how characters respond to challenges in
-Student devices the story.

I can use Padlet to recommend a book to a friend.

Lesson Activities: (Read aloud and discussion led by homeroom teacher, Padlet
led by media specialist)
1. Introduction: Introduce the book, Walter the Farting Dog, and discuss
reasons why the teacher recommends this book to readers (it’s hilarious,
illustrations are cool, etc). Today, we are going to be looking at how the
characters respond to problems within the story.
2. Read Aloud: Read the book, stopping to pause and think, turn and talk
about problems within the story and how the characters respond. Example:
Walter stinks, how do the characters respond? Mom and Dad want to get rid
of him. Betty and Billy can look past the smell to keep him.
3. Discussion: Ask students what responses to issues stuck out to them within
the story? How were the characters' responses different? (chart answers on
an anchor chart)
4. Padlet: Have students access the Padlet through the media center Canvas
course. It is linked to the second-grade button. Explain that this book is one
of Mrs. Clark’s favorite stories to read, and pose this question to students:
Can you think of a book where characters respond to a problem? Post a
book or two in the Padlet that you would recommend a friend to read.

Assessment:
- The teacher will assess responses from students on an anchor chart, and
from turn and talk discussions.
- The Media Specialist will assess the Padlet responses and use it to inform
following lessons.
Reading Enrichment Unit: Lesson #2
Grade: SECOND Date: Time: 60 minutes

Georgia Standard of Excellence:

ELAGSE2RL3 Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and
challenges.

AASL National School Library Standards:

V. Explore- C. Share- Learners engage with the learning community by: (1)
Expressing curiosity about a topic of personal interest or curricular relevance.

Materials: Objectives:
-Walter the Farting Dog I can discuss how characters respond to challenges in
Goes on a Cruise the story.
-Chart paper
-Sticky notes I can find my intended books in the media center.
-Pencils

Lesson Activities: (media specialist will lead entire lesson, with teacher supporting
learners during discussion and book search)
1. Introduction: Discuss with students the previous lesson, including Walter
the Farting Dog as well as the Padlet where students shared favorite books.
Share that we are going to read another Walter story, and will be looking out
for what kinds of challenges Walter will face this time, and how he responds.
2. Read Aloud: Walter the Farting Dog Goes on a Cruise - Read the book,
stopping to pause and think, turn and talk about problems within the story
and how the characters respond.
3. Discussion: Give each student two sticky notes. On one note, have them
write down a challenge from the story and post it on the chart paper. Review
the sticky notes with the class and discuss their thoughts. On the second
note, have students write down how the characters responded to the major
event or challenge, and match it up with the challenge on the chart paper.
Discuss the new sticky notes.
4. Book Search: Now we are going to hunt for books. Allow students to partner
up with a friend- it has to be only two students. In thinking about some of
our favorite books, students are going to pick out two books today from the
media center. Explain to the class that one book is going to be for them to
read, and one book for their partner. They must be very thoughtful in
picking out the books. For themselves, they can pick ANY book out that they
want to read. For their partner, they must think about a book that has
challenges like we have been discussing. Once they find their partner's
book, they will exchange them, and then check them out with the teachers.
Remind students of Destiny Discover for searching for particular books,
including eBooks ( we have learned this in previous lessons in media class).
The teacher will help students choose books for their partner to ensure
reading levels are appropriate (this is important for the following lesson).
5. Independent Practice: During reading times in their homeroom classroom,
students will read the book their partner chose for them.

Assessment:
- The teacher will assess students’ knowledge of how characters respond to
challenges by evaluating the sticky note responses.
- The media specialist will evaluate how students are navigating the media
center and searching for books for their intended purpose (using Destiny
Discover, Genre labels, etc.),
Reading Enrichment Unit: Lesson #3
Grade: SECOND Date: Time: 45 minutes

Georgia Standard of Excellence:

ELAGSE2RL3 Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and
challenges.

AASL National School Library Standards:

V. Explore- A. Think- Learners develop and satisfy personal curiosity by: (1) Reading
widely and deeply in multiple formats and write and create for a variety of
purposes.

Materials: Objectives:
-Student devices I can discuss how characters respond to challenges
-Library books in the story.
-Sticky notes
-Chart paper I can create a digital flyer about my library book.

Lesson Activities:
1. Introduction: Review previous lesson(s) and their importance to
understanding characters and challenges in stories.
2. Independent Practice: It is now time to show what we have learned
throughout the unit. Students will design a digital flyer using Canva (or if
they prefer another platform such as Google Slides) on the book that their
partner chose for them. The flyer should include:
a) Picture of the book
b) Title, author, and illustrator
c) Student’s favorite part of the book
d) Challenges in the story
e) How did the character(s) respond to the challenges?
3. Share: Allow students to share their flyer with the class or with their table
depending on time. The teacher will print flyers and hang them outside
their classroom. The media specialist will collect digital copies to display on
digital signs in the media center.
4. Self Assessment: The media specialist and teacher will give students a
sticky note. They will write a sad, happy, or meh face on it, and place it on the
chart paper to reflect how engaged they were during the entire unit. The
class will discuss the sticky notes and why they felt that way. What are
things we could do differently in the future? What are successes / failures
from the unit?
Assessment:
- The teacher will evaluate the students’ knowledge of characters and
challenges from the completed flyer.
- The media specialist will assess students’ knowledge of utilizing Canva by
observing how they navigate the platform and reviewing their final product.
