Tsunami
The word tsunami comes from the Japanese language meaning great waves. As for the definition
agreed upon by many people, a tsunami is a large water waves caused by disturbances on the seabed, such
as earthquake or due to a volcanic eruption at sea. This disturbance forms waves that spread in all
directions with wave speeds reaching 600 900 km per hour. Initially the waves have a small amplitude, so
they are not felt on the high seas, but their amplitude increases as they approach the coast. There are
several causes of tsunamis and they cause tsunamis with different mechanisms. The first is an
earthquake. Underwater earthquakes occur due to the meeting of two earth's plates that collide with
each other. When the two plates collide and there is an up and down fault pattern, this is a sign of a
tsunami. When the plate moves vertically, this will trigger the water above it to form waves in all
directions, including towards the mainland which will cause a tsunami. This is what happens for water to
regain its balance on top of the colliding plates and change their position.
The second is a Volcanic eruptions, both above and below sea level, can cause tsunamis. Volcanic
eruptions that can cause a tsunami only occur if the vibration strength is large enough, which is
equivalent to a tectonic earthquake that occurs under the sea. One example of a tsunami due to a
volcanic eruption is the Banten tsunami in 2018 which was caused by the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau.
Another example is the eruption of Mount Krakatoa in 1883 which killed more than 36,000 people.
The third is meteor, tsunami caused by meteor hit are rare and there is even no documentation that
mentions a tsunami caused by a meteor strike. However, this may happen. A simulation from a
sophisticated computer shows that if there is a large meteor with a diameter of more than 1 km, it
will cause a catastrophic natural disaster. The effect is the same as when a ball or heavy object hits
the water in a pool or tub of water.
Characteristics of a tsunami is if the sea water recedes suddenly and the salty smell is very strong
for the sense of smell. In addition, another characteristic is the sound of a roar that is so big from a
distance. The roar is so big and loud.
Although it cannot be prevented, there are several things that need to be done when facing a
tsunami, first, move quickly to higher ground and quickly move away from the coast. If you can't find a
high place, look for a building with a strong construction. It consists of at least three floors. Avoid
choosing buildings that look fragile and old. Better to take cover on a safe floor and wait for things
to improve. If you have already been carried away by the tsunami waves, look for floating objects
that can be used as rafts, such as tree trunks.
