Engineering SWL for

Falsework Systems
(Updated to Jun 2015)

CRAB 60 System (AES)

A. Basic Information

This guideline note is based on the AES – Crab 60 scaffolding system catalogue (attached in
Appendix A – Crab 60 Catalogue) and also the current design code in HK – COP for the Structural
Use of Steel 2011.

B. System Component

C. Recommend Working Load Capacity

The above recommended load is based on the system component size and steel grade as
specified in the catalogue and design according to the COP for the Structural Use of Steel 2011.
F.O.S. of 2 was applied to develop the safe working. Please note that the above SWL is also based
on the criteria as stipulated in Section E.

D. Bracing & Ledger Arrangement

As the diagonal bracing is built-into the vertical post, the bracing and ledgers arrangement of this
system should pay attention to the requirements of connection between scaffolding towers.
Falsework towers should be connected together to fulfill the height-width ratio of 3 in 1 and well as
the checking of minimum bracing requirements to cater for nominal horizontal load (2.5% of vertical
load).

E. Particular Attention

1. All falsework structures must follow the procedures as set-out in the PDS/06.

2. Do not use the SWL as stipulated in the catalogue. Refer to Section 3 of this guideline notes for
the recommend working load capacity.

3. Ensure all the component of the system delivered on site is same as those specified in the
catalogue. A clear identification of each component of Crab 60 system is required when
delivery on site in order to differentiate other system.

4. Ensure the jack diameter is compatible with the system.

Do not mix up with the small diameter jack particular for

this high capacity system.

5. Jack extensions, both head jack and base jack, are limited
to 300mm unless further justification by design.

6. Ensure the falsework system rests on solid ground or supported on a foundation. Pay particular
attention to the foundation design to support heavy scaffolding leg loads and ensure that the
allowable bearing capacity of the ground is not exceeded.

7. Horizontal ledge between towers must be installed at each layer before proceed to next lift
height.

8. Please refer the installation guideline as stipulated in the Catalogue. Ensure that plane bracing
is installed at the base of the structure.

9. Please also make reference to the Gammon Falsework Checklist and Gammon Formwork

Requirement Notes.
