Seed of Change

“The Earth does not belong to us. We belong to the

Earth.” This popular quote of Marlee Matlin rings with truth
as continued wreckage to the environment is committed by us
humans. The irony of it all is that we’re ruining the very thing
that’s keeping us alive. Although it has existed for centuries,
environmental pollution only started to make significant damage
after the industrial revolution in the 19th century. Pollution
happens when the environment harms itself when destroying a
foreign element that is not produced by nature. Human activities
such as deforestation, emission from power plants, building of factories and a lot more to
mention have seen to be of great contribution to the slow deterioration of our Mother Earth.

Take the Great Barrier Reef as an example. Once a

diverse place where hundreds of marine animals thrive
has now become a memory of the past as 93% of it is
ruined from coral bleaching. This is just the tip of the
iceberg. As of the moment, we are at the brink of global
warming; a sign that we may have just passed a point that
would decide the fate of mankind.

One of the four main values of every Filipino

citizen is to take good care of our nature and as such, the ZSNHS Supreme Student
Government (SSG) has been taking the lead in spearheading activities that raise more
awareness and eventually lessen the destruction we cause to the environment through proper
waste management. SSG encourages students to abide by
the proper waste management and also facilitates clean up
drive and make every student feel the importance of these
significant acts. The various non-academic clubs that the
SSG launched recently would also open more
opportunities to environmentalists to establish an
organization in the school where they would be able to
interact with the students in an easier manner. These
activities would help the students to actively engage
themselves and be the seeds of change.
