the poor contact between the upper and lower half of a lemon_type journal bearing could be the cause of
its failure?

Mehdi Nouri engineer at Mapna Turbine Manufacturing Co. Top Contributor

there is a lemon_type journal bearing with the shaft diameter of 350 mm that its Babbitt layer has been
damaged after over-speed mechanical test, a 0.2 mm feeler gauge goes through its junction. Is it possible that
it is the root cause of bearing failure or not?

Mehdi Feizipour Sr. Rotating Equipment Engineer at CNPCI

Mehdi, you are right, already it has been happened for me during FAT mechanical run test, because of wrong
design of bearing it damage the shaft also thus the vendor changed the bearing and repaired the shaft.

i have designed it my self more than 100 rotors has been tested before successfully. We decided to build
another bearing as spare bearing, this one that has been damaged was tested with spare bearing with the
same drawing. My question:the poor surface contact in junction can itself cause the failure?

John Heulens Rotating Engineer at TOTAL

I believe it can ;because there will be loss of oil through the gap between upper and lower half and have
influence on the oil flow more important it will have influence (disturb) the oil film in the bearing and create
damage.

Mehdi Nouri engineer at Mapna Turbine Manufacturing Co.

I have sent you the bearing drawing. I supposed the dissipation of oil because of non contact in junction is
negligible because as the rotor rotates it swallows the oil from enterance oil pocket. Besides after disassembly
the bearing was merged in oil and the oil temperature and its flow was normal during the test.

Please check a clearance between bearing and shaft because as I understand from above comments the oil
system is normal and this fauiler is wear friction which occurs when low amount of oil (pressure &flow rate) or
improper clearance or high vibration.

If we talk about vibration may be there are also of things causes this vibration like unbalance, resonance, etc

Mehdi Feizipour Sr. Rotating Equipment Engineer at CNPCI

It's depend on the bearing temperature, if it is decreasing during the test the oil film has not been steady and
will damage the bearing and shaft; because of the friction between the closed side of the lemon bearing and
shaft.
