Helping your child with reading and writing

Enjoy taking an active part in helping your child learn and practise essential reading
and writing skills with Letts Phonics. Your support will get your child off to a good |a
start with those early reading and writing skills being taught at school.
Understanding phonics will help your child learn that letters and groups of letters have
different sounds that can be blended together to make words, the building blocks of
all education, and open up new learning opportunities both at home and school.

The Letts Phonics Series

There are 6 workbooks of increasing difficulty for children aged 4-7 in the series.
The books gradually introduce and develop phonic skills in gentle steps.
Stage 1 —_—introduces the sounds of the individual letters of the alphabet. It
helps your child to hear and discriminate each letter sound at the
beginning of words and recognise each letter shape.
Stage 2 _ revises the alphabet sounds and shapes. It helps your child form and
write each letter correctly.
Stage 3. introduces word-building with simple words.
Stage 4 _introduces the idea that two or more letters may represent single sounds
€.g. ea as in seat.
Stage 5 continues with more essential common combinations of letter sounds.
Stage 6 — deals with more difficult phonic skills.

Using Stage 5 of the scheme with your child

Helping your child at home will give him or her valuable support in their education.
Here are some simple suggestions to help you make the most of the experience:
e At the foot of each page a Parent Tip has been provided to explain the main idea
of the activities. Read these before looking at each page together and discussing
it with your child. Read the simple instructions with your child and demonstrate
what to do if your child is at all uncertain.
The activities in this book develop further the idea that often two or more letters
combine together to make one sound e.g. ‘oy’ as in ‘toy'. Many of the activities
involve learning and practising such sounds.
Always give plenty of praise and encouragement and try not to do too much at once.
Regular, short enjoyable periods of learning are the most effective way to learn.
_ Enjoy the book together and have fun with Letts Phonics!
