EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Alan Smith, senior manager of sales at a medical device company has to promote an employee.
Two employees are shortlisted, Mita Anand and John Merriweather. They have commendable
performance record. So, Alan Smith decides to call a team meeting during an off-site for their
inputs. The whole team argues but the decision is at a standstill until Elliot Bowers comes up
with a statement against Mita Anand based on an incident that happened last night. Now the
discussion weighs in favor of John. Alan adjourns the meeting and takes the decision of
promoting John after studying very pros and cons.

SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS
Alan Smith, a senior manager of a marketing and sales team at a medical devices company has an
important matter in hand, he has to choose an employee to promote. So, he decides to discuss it with
his team and his boss about whom to promote. There are two candidates in consideration, Mita
Anand and John Merriweather, both of them are excellent performers and have their own strength
which are perfect for the position. During the meeting various team members spoke what they felt
but the discussion was not moving forward until Elliot Bower spoke against Mita Anand.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Alan Smith has to decide keeping everyone’s opinions and both the potential candidate’s
performance and strength which are almost same. The post for which promotion is being done
is an important post so the decision is very important. Elliot Bowers statement about MIta
Anand has to be considered. He has to make a rationalized decision.

OBJECTIVE

➢ To choose between Mita Anand and John Merriweather for the promotion.
➢ Look into the performance and strength of both the candidates.
➢ Take opinions of all the team members in the decision making.
➢ Consider the statement made by Elliot Bowers on Mita Anand.
➢ Choose the person who is best suited for the job and will benefit the company.

Mita Anand

Mita Anand is an important part of the company has been at top of her performance ever since
she got employed. She’s impeccable at her current post and takes her job very seriously.
There was a balanced opinion about her in the team meeting until Elliot Bowers spoke up about
her behavior from last time, though the comment was of no importance to the meeting but the
members picked up on the comment. This tilted the balance away from her. But this is due to
her out going nature.

3. Very outgoing
4. Willing to speak her mind

1. Gender Inequality
2. Outgoing nature
3. Time management as she’s a mother too
Option: 2
John Merriweather

Another employee in the race for the promotion is John Merriweather. He’s also a consistent
performer and an important asset for the company. He takes his job seriously and does it with
all his zeal. He has been part of the company for a long time and has been an ideal employee.
He also has great rapport with other employees of the company and is a team player.

Pros: -
1. Consistent strong performance
2. Great reputation throughout the company
3. Easy fit for the company
4. Team Player
Cons: -
1. Team members are biased towards him in the meeting.
2. Because of his rapport the decision making can become monotonous.

DECISION AND JUSTIFICATION


John Merriweather

Given the scenario John Merriweather seems to be the right choice. Both Mita Anand and John
Merriweather are almost similar one the performance matrix and are both hardworking and
have a positive attitude. But with John Merriweather it’s his reputation among the company
and his fraternity with his coworkers that can be fruitful for the company. It will help in creating
a positive environment in the company and also increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the
company. Also, one of the reasons is that he is a culturally easy fit for the company resulting
in efficient working again.

➢ Serious deliberation on both the options after taking everyone’s opinions

➢ Announce the decision
➢ John Merriweather takes the position

CONTINGENCY PLAN
Mita Anand should be given enough incentives that she does not get demotivated by this. She
can be promoted if John Merriweather fails to do his job effectively and efficiently. As she has
a broad thinking and is outgoing it can help company to recuperate if John fails. Also, her
quality of being out spoken can be of an advantage as she’ll give a straight feedback and not a
diplomatic one which will help in fast tracking the decisions.
