FAULTING AND SEISMIC

ZONE IN THE PHILIPPINES

EARTHQUAKE
• The shaking or trembling caused by the sudden
release of energy.

• It occurs when rocks along a fault suddenly

move, due to plate tectonic movement and
volcanic eruption.
EARTH’S CRUST STRESSES
STRESS
• It is a force that squeezes rock together,
stretches or pulls them apart, or pushes them in
different directions.
• As tectonic plates move, they cause stress in the
crust, which in turn procedures faults and folds.
FAULTS
• A fault is a break in the Earth’s crust along which
significant movement taken place.
TYPES OF FAULTS
• Strike-slip faults: are vertical fractures where the blocks have
mostly move horizontally.

• Dip-slip faults: are inclines fractures where the blocks have

mostly shifted vertically.

• Transform faults: is a special variety of strike-slip fault that

accommodates relative horizontal slip between other
tectonic elemEnts, such as oceanic crustal plates.

FOLDS
• A fold is when or more originally bent surfaces are
bent or curved as the result of permanent
deformation.

4. Eastern Philippine Fault Philippine Sea
5. Southern of Mindanao Fault Moro Gulf, Celebes Sea
MARIKINA FAULT LINE
• It is the most geologically active fault line in the Philippines.
• It is located in East of Metro Manila and cuts through all the
modern and progressive portions of Manila, Rizal, Marikina
City, Quezon City such as Eastwood, Rockwell Ortigas Center,
Bonifacio Global City, Ayala Center, and Alabang.

• It was renamed to West Valley Fault.

MARIKINA FAULT LINE
• It renamed, because it caused panic to the residents of
Marikina, as wells as most of the business community within
the inclusive areas..
• According to Seismologist, once the West Valley Fault Line
moved, it can lead to the eruption of Taal Volcano just what
happened in June 1990 earthquake when the Central
Philippine Fault Move.

• It was renamed to West Valley Fault.

CENTRAL PHILIPPINE FAULT ZONE
• Philippine Fault Zone is a transition zone with slow slip and creep
activity.

• It comprises the Guinyangan Fault, Masbate Fault, and Central Luzon

Fault
• This is found to be the site and sources of fault creep activity, slow
slip event and great earthquakes in the archipelago
• Accd’g to Willis (1937) and Allen (1962) the PFZ is comparable to San
Andres Fault in California because on its geologic features, faulting
and seismic characteristics.
TRENCH
• It is an excavation in the ground caused man’s digging, river
erosion, earth movement and other environmental factors.
TRENCHES IN THE PHILIPPINE REGION
• Manila Trench
• East Luzon Trench
• Philippine Trench
• Negros Trench
• Sulu Trench
• Cotabato Trench
