OBJECTIVE:
ONGC has planned to use Under Balanced Drilling Technology (UBDT) in 11 wells (indicative) in the
Western Offshore Oil Fields of Mumbai High (MH) and Neelam field (N&H) to drill horizontal drain holes
up to 1000 m length in depleted reservoir sections, completing the wells with UBDT to
Record/Assess/Evaluate improvement in well & field productivity.
The primary drivers for the application of UBD Technology are:
· Loss prevention and hence ability to drill longer laterals.
· Drilling undamaged wells.
· Enhanced productivity & Recovery.
In order to gain the long term objectives of the UBD Project, indicated above, it is necessary that the
proposed Project of UBD proceeds with the precise scope of work, closely coordinated with the service
provider for safe and cost effective selection of method & material by means of the necessary course
corrections between each well/ platform. The execution needs to be monitored closely with expert
inputs at each stage.
2.0 INTRODUCTION:
ONGC, The "Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited", an Indian E&P company which has the
Government of India as its main shareholder, operates of the order of nearly 125 drilling rigs in India as
well as in overseas which includes nearly 31 offshore rigs. ONGC has its drilling operations spread over
all of India as well as in the offshore areas like Western offshore and Eastern Offshore. ONGC has also
a significant Deep Water/ Ultra Deep Water Exploration program.
ONGC has planned to use Under Balanced Drilling Technology (UBDT) in selected wells in the Western
Offshore oil fields.

3.0. GENERAL INFORMATION:
3.1. (a) Mumbai High field
Mumbai High, the biggest offshore oil field in India, covering an area of around 1200 sq. km, is situated
in the western offshore in the west northwest direction from Mumbai city in India. It is a very large
anticline reservoir the northern and southern parts of the Mumbai High field are hydro-dynamically
separated by an E-W trending shale channel in L-III reservoir, with perceptible difference in gas oil
contact (GOC) level in L-III, in the North and the South Mumbai High. On this basis, the field is divided
into two blocks, Mumbai High North (MHN) and Mumbai High South (MHS). L-II and L -III are the two
main limestone oil reservoirs of Miocene age. The L-III reservoir is multilayered with shale, limestone
sequence and holds about 94% of the total initial oil in place of the field. The L-II reservoir consists of
ten main reservoir sub-layers designated as A 1, A2-I to A2-VII, B & C separated by shale or tight lime
stone bands. The reservoir is very heterogeneous with individual layers having varying pressures,
permeability and productivity. The development strategy is to maintain current reservoir pressures using
flank water injection.
3.1 (b) Heera field
Heera and South Heera fields are situated 70 km south-west of Mumbai city and 140 km south-east of
Mumbai High at an average water depth of about 50 m. Both the fields proved to be major hydrocarbon
bearing structures in Mumbai Offshore Basin with a number of reservoirs of commercial oil and gas
accumulations.
3.1.1. Reservoir information
(a) Mumbai High Field:
L1 & L-IIB reservoirs are targeted for Underbalanced drilling in MH Asset.
L1 reservoir has a thickness of approximately 10 m in TVD & has two segments viz. Carbonate &
Clastic. It has been observed that Clastic segment of L1 reservoir is a prolific producer in majority of the
wells but appears to be fragile as per core sample available from well N15-9. However Insitu conditions
may be different & needs to be deliberated in house from UBD perspective. L1 reservoir is having sub
hydrostatic pressures of the range of 700 -800 psi. Traversing a drain hole under UBD conditions in
Clastic segment of L1 may require a good understanding of Geomechanics. The upper segment of L1
reservoir is mainly Carbonate while the lower segment is Clastic. The effective porosity in the Clastic
segment is of the order of 36 % whereas the Carbonate Part of L1 has an effective porosity of around
24%. The acquired mobility at the probe position range from 1 mD/cP to 84 mD/cP in the clastic
segment & 1 – 5 mD/cP in the carbonate segment during the pressure testing in open hole during
drilling
L-IIB: L-IIB is a carbonate reservoir with lateral & vertical heterogeneity in the form of vugs & fractures.
The reservoir pressures in the targeted wells are sub hydrostatic in the range of 700-800 psi. The
acquired mobility at the probe position range from 1 mD/cP to 29 mD/cP during reservoir pressure
testing in open hole at the time of drilling. The effective porosities range from 24 -30 %
The wells are to be landed on top of L1 / L-IIB reservoir (as the case may be) with 8-1/2” open hole
section to be cased with 7” liner & thereafter 6” drain hole section through the target zone.
(b). Heera Field:
Heera is a multilayered reservoir with following pays: Basement, Panna sand, Bassein, Mukta, Heera
and Bandra formations (bottom to top).Major part of the in-place oil exists in Bassein Formation in both
Heera and South Heera fields and this pay is a prolific producer. Mukta Formation with a thickness of
10-12 m overlies the Bassein Formation in Heera and South Heera fields. It directly overlies the Panna
Formation in the crestal part of Heera field where Bassein Formation has been pinched out.
In North Heera and Mid Heera, all the pays are separated by intervening shales whereas in South
Heera the shale separation is much less resulting in connectivity of the pays at places. Due to this
many wells in South Heera are in commingled production. Except Bandra pay all other layers are oil
bearing with associated gas. Bandra layer is free gas bearing.
3.1.2. Well construction information
(a) Mumbai High Field:
In MH field, the 30' casing is piled up to about 125m, and the 20" casing covers up to about 250 m. The
13 3/8” casing landed on top of the shale above the pay zones of L-1 section. The 9 5/8” casing is
lowered at the top of the main pay (L-III limestone). The 7" liner is then lowered to the top of the
particular L-III sub layer where the horizontal drain hole is planned at 90° inclinations.
(b) Heera Field:
In Heera field, the 30' casing is piled up to about 150m, and the 20" casing covers up to about 300 m.
The 13 3/8" casing is landed on top of shale above the loss prone H 1 A limestone section. The 9 5/8"
casing is lowered at the top of the H3 limestone covering the Oligocene shale. The 7" liner is then
lowered to the top of the H3B limestone reservoir where the horizontal drain hole is planned at 90°
inclinations.
For wells in HM platform, 7” liner is lowered to the top of H3A limestone reservoir (Mukta since Bassein
is absent) and drain hole is planned at 90° inclinations.
3.1.3. Formation Pressure & gas lift availability (Heera Field):
Expected reservoir pressure in Bassein formation where HN platform is to be installed is of the range
900-1100 psi. In HM platform, the expected pressure of Mukta formation is 1000-1200 psi.
Note: Any other relevant/desired Reservoir information pertaining to UBD feasibility studies will be
