Grapevine
Client`s instructions
Position yourself in standing. Walk to the right. Cross with left foot in
front of right foot, take a step to the right with your right foot, cross
with left foot behind right foot and take another step to the right with
your right foot. Stay facing forwards and continue to end. Reverse the
order when moving to left.
Progressions and variations
Less advanced: 1. Place a line on the floor and instruct the patient to
walk along the line. More advanced: 1. Alter the pattern of leg
crossing. 2. Increase the speed of the task.

Leg lift backwards weight bearing on prosthetic limb


Client`s instructions
Position yourself standing with your hands resting on a chair in front of
you. Take your unaffected leg back while keeping your knee straight
and body upright.
Precautions
Ensure that the patient is stable and safe if using a chair for support.
A solid structure such as a table will provide more stability.

Leg lift backwards with prosthetic limb


Client`s instructions
Position yourself standing with your hands resting on a chair in front of
you. Take your prosthetic limb back while keeping your knee straight
and body upright.

Leg lift sideways weight bearing on your prosthetic limb
Client`s instructions
Position yourself in standing with your hand resting on a chair next to
your prosthetic limb. Lift your unaffected leg up sideways with knee
extended. Maintain a straight posture by aligning your nose, belly
button and great toe.
Precautions
Ensure that the patient is stable and safe if using a chair for support.
A solid structure such as a table will provide more stability.

Leg lift sideways with prosthetic limb


Client`s instructions
Position yourself in standing with your hand resting on a chair on your
unaffected side. Lift your prosthetic leg sideways with knee extended.
Maintain a straight posture by aligning your nose, belly button and

Weight bearing while throwing a ball


Client`s instructions
Position yourself facing a target on a wall. Throw a large ball at the
target and then catch it.
Progressions and variations
Less advanced: 1. Stand with the feet wider apart. 2. Stand with the
feet level on the ground. More advanced: 1. Stand with the feet closer
together. 2. Use multiple targets positioned higher/lower/to each side.

Standing balance on an unstable surface
Client`s instructions
Position yourself in standing with your feet slightly apart on an
unstable surface (e.g., balance ball, foam or wobble board). Aim to
stay steady while looking ahead at a fixed spot.
Progressions and variations
Less advanced: 1. Increase base of support. 2. Use a more stable
surface. More advanced: 1. Decrease base of support. 2. Decrease
upper limb support.
Precautions
Use upper limbs for support.

Side-stepping
Client`s instructions
Position yourself standing with your feet a few cms apart. Practice
taking a big step sideways making sure you move your weight in the
direction of the step. Ensure that your knees are kept straight and
your feet point forwards.
Progressions and variations
Less advanced: 1. Have upper limb support nearby. More advanced:
1. Increase step size. 2. Add concurrent cognitive and/or manual
task/s. 3. Begin with legs crossed and step sideways. 4. Reduce
upper limb support.

Single leg stance with foot on a small ball


Client`s instructions
Position yourself in standing. Place your unaffected foot on the ball
and balance on the prosthetic limb.
Progressions and variations
More advanced: 1. Remove upper limb support. 2. Move the ball
forwards, backwards and sideways. 3. Move the ball in circles. 4. Use
a skateboard instead of a ball.

Reaching for a target on the wall
Client`s instructions
Stand with targets placed on the wall on the side of your prosthetic
limb. Place the targets at varying distances, directions and heights
from you. Reach to touch the targets one at a time, while keeping
your feet still.
Progressions and variations
Less advanced: 1. Provide hand support for balance. 2. Position the
patient closer to the wall and/or the targets closer to the patient. 3.
Position the targets between waist and shoulder height. More
advanced: 1. Position the patient further from the wall and/or the
targets further from the patient. 2. Position the targets lower down and
higher up the walls. 3. Increase speed.

Offset sit to stand


Client`s instructions
Position yourself sitting on a chair with both feet on the floor. Place
your unaffected leg forward and practice standing up and sitting down.
Ensure that your shoulders move forward when you move between
sitting and standing.
Progressions and variations
Less advanced: 1. Increase the height of the chair. 2. Provide hand
support for balance. More advanced: 1. Decrease the height of the
chair. 2. Position the unaffected leg forward. 3. Use a stool with
wheels.

Marching on the spot


Client`s instructions
Position yourself in standing between two chairs or at a table for
support. March on the spot. Hold each leg up for 3 seconds.
Progressions and variations
Less advanced: 1. Decrease duration of leg elevation. More
advanced: 1. Increase duration of leg elevation.
Precautions
Ensure that the patient is stable and safe if using chairs for support. A

Walking while rotating to side
Client`s instructions
Position yourself in standing, holding onto a ball with both hands.
Practice walking whilst rotating the ball to the side of the leg that is
stepping forward.
Progressions and variations
More advanced: 1. Increase the size of the ball. 2. Increase the size of
the sideward movement of the ball.
