Bridging
Therapist`s aim
To strengthen the hip extensors.
Client`s aim
To strengthen the muscles at the back of your hip.
Therapist`s instructions
Position the patient in crook lying. Instruct the patient to lift their
bottom off the bed.
Client`s instructions
Position yourself lying on your back with your knees bent. Lift your
bottom off the bed.
Progressions and variations
Less advanced: 1. Decrease the height of the lift. More advanced: 1.
Sustain the lift. 2. Perform the exercise using one leg.

Hip abduction in sitting with theraband


Therapist`s aim
To strengthen the hip abductors.
Client`s aim
To strengthen your hip muscles.
Therapist`s instructions
Position the patient in sitting with their feet on the floor and a
theraband around their thighs. Instruct the patient to push out against
the theraband.
Client`s instructions
Position yourself in sitting with your feet on the floor and a theraband
around your thighs. Push out against the theraband.

Hip extensor strengthening in standing


Therapist`s aim
To strengthen the hip extensors.
Client`s aim
To strengthen the muscles at the back of your hip.
Therapist`s instructions
Position the patient in standing with their hands resting on a table in
front of them. Instruct the patient to extend their hip while keeping
their knee extended.

More advanced: 1. Progress using strength training principles.

Knee extension in sitting


Therapist`s aim
To increase strength in the quadriceps.
Client`s aim
To strengthen your thigh muscles.
Therapist`s instructions
Position the patient in sitting in a chair or with their legs over the side
of a bed, thighs supported and feet on the floor. Instruct the patient to
slide their knee backwards bending their knee as much as possible.
Instruct the patient to tighten the muscles in their thigh, lift their toes
and straighten the knee.
Client`s instructions
Position yourself in sitting in a chair or with your legs over the side of
a bed, thighs supported and feet on the floor. Slide your knee
backwards bending your knee as much as possible. Tighten the
muscles in your thigh, lift your toes and straighten your knee as able.
Progressions and variations
Less advanced: Straighten your knee through less range. More
advanced: Increase resistance.
Precautions
If you have pain in your calf or foot, adjust your foot position (ie. Relax
your ankle).

Quadriceps and hip flexor stretch on a chair


Therapist`s aim
To stretch or maintain length of knee extensors.
Client`s aim
To stretch or maintain length of the muscles in front of your knee.
Therapist`s instructions
Position the patient in standing with their back to the chair seat.
Instruct the patient to flex their affected knee and rest their foot on the
chair. Instruct the patient to gently push their hips forwards.
Client`s instructions
Position yourself in standing with your back facing the seat of a chair.
Place the foot of your affected knee on the chair behind you. You will
feel a stretch in your affected thigh and knee. Gently push your hips

Progressions and variations
Less advanced: 1. Lower chair height. 2. Decreased knee bend of
unaffected leg. More advanced: 1. Raise the chair height. 2.
Increased knee bend of unaffected leg.
