Anterior chest, neck and chin stretch
Client`s aim
To stretch tight tissue over the front of your neck, chest and chin.
Client`s instructions
Position yourself in sitting. Look towards the ceiling with your mouth
open. Slowly close your mouth with your chin thrust forward.

Ear to the shoulder
Client`s aim
To stretch tight tissue over the side of your neck.
Client`s instructions
Position yourself sitting with good posture. Tilt your head to the side
with your opposite shoulder lowered. You may need to adjust your
position to find the maximal area of stretch by rotating or tilting your
neck or a combination of both as instructed by your physiotherapist.
Progressions and variations
More advanced: 1. Increase the stretch by taking your ear closer to
your shoulder. 2. Use your hand to assist the stretch.

Frown
Client`s aim
To maintain or improve your frown and to re-establish normal facial
movement.
Client`s instructions
Practice frowning. Ensure that the right and left sides of your face
move equally.
Progressions and variations
A mirror could be used to ensure equal movement on the left and right
hand sides of the face.
Head turn
Client`s aim
To stretch tight tissue over your neck and shoulder.
Client`s instructions
Position yourself in sitting with good posture. Turn your head to the
side with your opposite shoulder lowered. You might need to adjust
your position to find the maximal area of stretch by tilting, extending or
turning your neck or a combination of all as instructed by your
physiotherapist.
Progressions and variations
More advanced: 1. Increase the stretch by turning your head further.
2. Use your hand to assist the stretch.

Horizontal mouth stretch
Client`s aim
To maintain or improve the horizontal opening of your mouth and to
re-establish normal facial movement.
Client`s instructions
Stretch your mouth as wide as possible into a smile to reveal your
teeth. Increase the stretch by using one or two fingers on each side of
your mouth to improve opening. Ensure that the right and left sides of
your mouth move equally and that you apply petroleum jelly or
lubricant as recommended by your physiotherapist. This is to avoid
the lips cracking.
Progressions and variations
Variations: A mirror could be used to ensure equal movement on the
left and right hand sides of the face. Progressions: More advanced –
Complete the exercise without manual guidance of the fingers.

Neck stretch over the edge of the bed
Client`s aim
To stretch tight tissue over the front of your neck and chest.
Client`s instructions
Lie on your back with your shoulders in line with the edge of the bed.
Close your mouth and thrust your chin forwards. You might need to
rotate or tilt or a combination of the two to find the maximal area of
stretch as instructed by your physiotherapist.
Palm down
Client`s aim
To stretch tight tissue over your forearm.
Client`s instructions
Position yourself standing with your elbow bent 90 degrees. Turn your
palm facing downwards. Ensure that you keep your elbow tucked into
your side.
Progressions and variations
1. Use your other hand to increase the stretch.
Palm up
Client`s aim
To stretch tight tissue over your forearm.
Client`s instructions
Stand with your elbow by your side and bent 90 degrees. Turn your
palm facing upwards. Ensure that you keep your elbow tucked into
your side.

Posterior shoulder stretch
Client`s aim
To stretch tight tissue over the back of your shoulder.
Client`s instructions
Use one hand to apply a stretch to the back of the opposite shoulder.
You may need to adjust your position to find the maximal area of
stretch as instructed by your physiotherapist.
Pucker lips
Client`s aim
To maintain or improve your ability to move your mouth and to re-
establish normal facial movement.
Client`s instructions
Practice puckering your lips. Ensure that the left and right side of your
mouth move equally and that you apply petroleum jelly or lubrication
to the lips as recommended by your physiotherapist. This is to avoid
your lips cracking.
Progressions and variations

Table-top stretch
Client`s aim
To stretch tight tissue over your knuckles.
Client`s instructions
Position yourself with your wrist extended. Bend at your knuckle
joints. Ensure that your fingers are kept straight maintaining a table-
top position.
Thigh stretch
Client`s aim
To stretch tight tissue over your hip and thigh.
Client`s instructions
Position yourself in standing with one knee bent. Hold onto the ankle
of your bent knee and pull it towards your bottom. Ensure that your
thigh remains vertical and as close to the other thigh as possible.

Trunk flexion stretch
