Our lesson for this module is the Intraclergy Conflicts and the Cavite Mutiny.

Cavite mutiny took place in the Arsenal of Cavite. It was an uprising of the soldiers

under the leadership of Fernando La Madrid. And there are two perceptions why this

mutiny happened. The point of view of the Spaniards, and view of the Filipinos who lead

the mutiny. Based on view of Filipinos at that time, Cavite Mutiny was happened

because of the worst Government system under Gen. Rafael de Izquierdo, for removing

the privileges and the personal benefits of the workers in Arsenal, and for requiring

them to pay monetary sum of taxes, and ordered them force labor, these was the

reason that led mutiny. Also, for them it was a response to injustice made by the

Spanish Government to the Filipinos at that time. But according to the view of

Spaniards, it was a big conspiracy among educated leaders, mestizos, native lawyers

and native clergy, not only the laborers of Cavite Arsenal. For them it was also a plan to

liquidate high-ranking Spanish officers to be followed by the massacre of the Spanish

friars. They believed also that the mutiny was powered by a group of native clergy led

by Fr. Mariano Gomez, Fr. Jose Burgos, and Fr. Jacinto Zamora, which is known as

GOMBURZA. But this mutiny was unsuccessful, causing all who supported mutineers

were arrested and executed, and caused Filipino soldiers to be disarmed and exiled in

Mindanao. Also this mutiny was used by the Spaniards to execute the three Priests,

which is GomBurZa by garrotte in Bagumbayan.

First I will explain its significance to our History and second its importance to the

Filipinos before until nowadays and why it is important to learn by the students. It was

said that it was the most significant event in our history. Because it’s the beginning of

the national consciousness of many Filipinos, and without the 1872 Cavite Mutiny there

will be no 1896 Philippine Revolution. For me, I think if there’s no Cavite Mutiny, the

Gomburza will not be executed. This death of these three priests had a significant effect

on many Filipinos because of their courage and the shadowy nature of the trials. Also

their death inspired the El Filibusterismo novel of Rizal. Which opens the mind and

consciousness of many people about the Governmental system of the Spaniards in the

Philippines and to their cruelty, that they can even kill priests, what’s more on ordinary

people like them. Also this writings of Rizal inspired the patriot of Andres Bonifacio

which led him to form the KKK, which is the Filipino revolutionary society and its goal

was to claim the Independence from Spain. Then the Philippine Revolution in 1896

sparked when Spanish Authorities discovered the KKK. Also GOMBURZA became the

battle cry of the propaganda movement.

While its importance to every Filipino and why it is important to study, is that it

shows Filipinos the importance of this event, that even though it was an unsuccessful

mutiny it gave a great impact and influence to every Filipino and mostly to Dr. Jose Rizal

which led to the 1896 Philippine Revolution. That this event is part, and it’s behind the

Philippine Revolution, and the Independence of the Philippines from the Spaniards

colonization. It is important to study by the students, for us not to forget the sacrifices of

people before for our Independence.
