Cavity Mutiny
Cavity Mutiny is one of the most significant historical accounts in the

Philippine History. It is the uprising of the 200 Filipino troops and workers
at the Cavite arsenal, which became the excuse for Spanish repression of

the embryonic Philippine nationalist movement. Ironically, the harsh

reaction of the Spanish authorities served ultimately to promote the
nationalist cause.
Cavity Mutiny
The mutiny was quickly crushed, but the Spanish regime under the
reactionary governor Rafael de Izquierdo magnified the incident and used
it as an excuse to clamp down on those Filipinos who had been calling for
governmental reform. A number of Filipino intellectuals were seized and
accused of complicity with the mutineers. After a brief trial, three priests—
José Burgos, Jacinto Zamora, and Mariano Gómez—were publicly
executed. The three subsequently became martyrs to the cause of
Philippine independence.

The Spanish version of Cavite
Perspective
Mutiny of 1872 is narrated by Jose
Montero y Vidal. His account
anchored on the thesis that the fateful
event of the 2oth of January 1872
happens due to the
concerted effort of disgruntled native
soldiers and laborers of Cavite
arsenal who willfully
revolted to overthrow the Spanish
rule, and thus, guilty of rebellion and
sedition.
Filipino Perspective
The Filipino version is told by Trinidad H.
Pardo de Tavera. For him, the so-called Cavite
Mutiny
is a mere incident of mutiny orchestrated by
native soldiers and laborers who reacted to the
harsh policy of the new governor-general,
Rafael de Izquierdo, who whimsically
terminated the
old-time privileges such as exempting them
from paying annual tribute and from rendering
forced labor or polo.
As accounted, it is made clear that the mutiny
is blown-up by the Spanish
officials and friars into a revolt as a way for
Filipinos to gain independence from Spanish
monarchy.
How Gomburza was executed?

Mariano Jose Burgos Jacinto

Gomes Zamora
• It was a major catalyst that pushed the events
forward leading to the failed reformist
agenda among Filipino liberals in Spain.

• It was against this charged environment that

GOMBURZA were accused and found guilty
of allegedly orchestrating the Cavite Mutiny of
1872, and charged with treason and sedition by
Spanish authorities.
How the Gomburza
contribute to the Filipino
concept of nationalism?
• The martyrdom of the three priests apparently
helped to inspire the organization of the
Propaganda Movement, which aimed to seek
reforms and inform Spain of the abuses of its
colonial government.
• And because of Gomburza, Jose Rizal
creat a book which is called "El
Filibusterismo" that it was dedicated to
the 3 Priest who was executed by the
Spanish.
WHAT IS
CONNECTION OF
THIS
REVOLUTION?
• The Cavite Mutiny of 1872 was the
beginning of Filipino nationalism that would
eventually lead to the Philippine Revolution
of 1896.

• It was also caught to the attention of every

filipino to join the revolution because, they
believe that the book of "El Filibusterismo" is
to defend Filipino people from foreign
accusations foolishness and lack of
knowledge. That was also inspired by Andres
Bonefacio.
