1. Summarize the attached environmental laws

R.A. 8749 - AN ACT PROVIDING FOR A COMPREHENSIVE AIR POLLUTION CONTROL POLICY AND FOR
OTHER PURPOSES

The State shall promote and protect the global environment to attain sustainable development. The
State recognizes that the responsibility of cleaning the habitat and environment is primarily area-
based. A clean and healthy environment is for the good of all and should, therefore, be the concern of
all. The State shall set up a funding or guarantee mechanism for clean-up and environmental
rehabilitation and compensation for personal damages. The right to participate in the formulation,
planning, implementation and monitoring of environmental policies and programs and in the
decision-making process is among the rights sought to be recognized.

R.A. 9147 - AN ACT PROVIDING FOR THE CONSERVATION AND PROTECTION OF WILDLIFE
RESOURCES AND THEIR HABITATS, APPROPRIATING FUNDS THEREFOR AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES

This Act is intended to conserve and protect wildlife species and their habitats to promote ecological
balance and enhance biological diversity. The provisions of this Act shall be enforceable for all wildlife
species found in all areas of the country, including protected areas under Republic Act No. 7586 and
critical habitats. This Act shall also apply to exotic species which are subject to trade, are cultured,
maintained and/or bred in captivity or propagated in captivity.

R.A. 6969 - AN ACT TO CONTROL TOXIC SUBSTANCES AND HAZARDOUS AND NUCLEAR WASTES,
PROVIDING PENALTIES FOR VIOLATIONS THEREOF, AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES

This Act covers the importation, manufacture, processing, storage, transportation, distribution, use
and disposal of all unregulated chemical substances and mixtures in the Philippines. The objectives of
this Act are to keep an inventory of chemicals that are being imported, manufactured, or used. a)
Importation means the entry of a product or substance into the Philippines (through the seaports or
airports of entry) after having been properly cleared through or still remaining under customs control.
Hazardous wastes shall include by-products, side-products and process residues. Nuclear wastes are
made radioactive by exposure to radiation incidental to the production or utilization of nuclear fuels.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources has the powers and responsibility to collect
and dispose of such wastes. A) To confiscate or impound chemicals found not falling within the
standard set by the rules and regulations; b) To monitor and prevent the entry, even in transit, of
hazardous and nuclear wastes and their disposal into the country; c) To subpoena witnesses and
documents and to require other information if necessary to carry out the provisions of this Act.

R.A. 9211 - AN ACT REGULATING THE PACKAGING, USE, SALE, DISTRIBUTION AND
ADVERTISEMENTS OF TOBACCO PRODUCTS AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES

The use, sale and advertisement of tobacco products shall be regulated in order to promote a
healthful environment and protect the citizens from the hazards of tobacco smoke. The main thrust of
this Act is to inform the public of the health risks associated with cigarette smoking and tobacco use.
"Cigarette" means a roll or tubular construction containing tobacco or its derivatives. "Mass Media"
includes print, broadcast, radio, television, cable television, and the internet. "Promotion" means an
event or activity organized by or on behalf of a tobacco manufacturer, distributor or retailer.

"Public Places" include enclosed or confined areas of all hospitals, medical clinics, schools, public
transportation terminals and offices. Smoking is also prohibited in buildings such as private and public
offices, recreational places, shopping malls, movie houses, hotels, restaurants, and the like.
R.A. 9003 - AN ACT PROVIDING FOR AN ECOLOGICAL SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM,
CREATING THE NECESSARY INSTITUTIONAL MECHANISMS AND INCENTIVES, DECLARING CERTAIN
ACTS PROHIBITED AND PROVIDING PENALTIES, APPROPRIATING FUNDS THEREFOR, AND FOR
OTHER PURPOSES

Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 amends the laws and policies of the State of
Guernsey to ensure the protection of public health and environment. It also provides for the proper
segregation, collection, transport, storage, treatment and disposal of solid waste through the
formulation and adoption of the best environmental practice in ecological waste management
excluding incineration. The aim is to retain primary enforcement and responsibility for waste
management with local government units while establishing a cooperative effort between them and
the private sector.

2. Based on the attached environmental laws, assess your community then write the current
environmental health-related problem/s of the community and give SMART solutions to address the
problem.

I believe that our community's current concern is air pollution; in order to prevent or address this
problem, we should restrict smoking in public, limit the burning of leaves and plastics, minimize the
use of wood stoves, and, if feasible, reduce the number of times you drive in a day. Waste disposal is
also an issue in our community; you can see garbage laying everywhere. I believe that we should have
proper garbage disposal by placing trash cans in each street and fining people who throw litter
everywhere. Finally, people in our community should be held accountable for keeping our community
and the environment clean.
