INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL DIZZINESS

➢ Digital dizziness, is a new type of dizziness that is becoming more and more
pronounced. When one feels dizzy, it is usually due to a malfunction of the nervous
system that is responsible for blood and oxygen flow to the brain and body.
Sometimes a person will feel dizzy when he gets up too fast from being seated. It is
the type of dizziness referred to in this article, and it is often put under the
category of vertigo.

Most people are familiar with motion sickness when the body detects
movement, but the eyes do not see it, making the person feel nauseous and
ill. Digital dizziness or cybersickness is the opposite, the eyes see movement
through computer screens or tablets, but the body does not feel it, creating
similar sensations to motion sickness. This is seen more often in people who
have had migraines or concussions. It is also seen more often in women than
men.
Five percent of the general population experience vestibular symptoms such
as Digital Dizziness each year. These symptoms generally become more
frequent, severe and prevalent with age. Dizziness is correlated with an
increased risk of falling and loss of functions which can lead to decrease in
independence and negatively affect the quality of life. Dizziness is more
prevalent in older adults and as the population grows older, the burden on
healthcare increases. Evidence indicates that internet based tools can be very
effective when treating vestibular symptoms. It has also been shown that
internet use is increasing among eldery. This brings an opportunity of making
healthcare more effective by developing digital tools that facilitate the work
for healthcare professionals.

This results from one study showed that patients that received internet based
treatment had greater decrease in vestibular symptoms compared to a control
group that only received usual care from a general practitioner.
