Skills level: medium.

You should already be familiar with crocheting in rounds; there are no basic
instructions included. (If you would like to get some more basic information I can
recommend the Amigurumi tutorials from PlanetJune:
J http://www.planetjune.com/blog/amigurumi-help.)
If you have any questions about this pattern or problems while making your Little
Witch, feel free to contact me! ☺

Materials Abbreviations
− 4-ply cotton yarn or any other yarn/wool you prefer - in the st stitch(es)
following colors: black, red, white, skin color, color of hair
sl st slip stitch
(amount: a half ball of the black yarn should be more than
ch chain
enough, from all other colors you’ll need fewer)
sc single crochet
− crochet hook in fitting size (I use 3 mm)
inc increase
− craft eyes (2 sc in next stitch)
dec decrease (2 sc
− filling
worked off together)
− for skirt: black lace/fabric, bordure/ribbon BLO back loops only
− for magic wand: small stick (about 12 cm / 4.7 inches long; FLO front loops only
I used a wooden skewer), brown yarn/wool, big bead FO fasten off
− sewing needle, tapestry needle
− for embellishment: e.g. security pin, yarn/embroidery floss,
beads, sequins, ribbons and so on
− scissors, stitch marker, craft glue (if needed)

Yarn
I normally use “Catania” from Schachenmayr (http://www.coatsgmbh.de) and sometimes “Cotton Quick” from
Gründl (www.gruendl-wolle.de). They measure 22 WPI* and have a specified gauge of 36 rows and 26 sts =
10 cm (about 9 rows and 6.5 sts = 1”) and recommended hook sizes of 2.5 to 3.5 mm.
I crochet pretty tightly, my gauge (for single crochets in round) is 8 rows and 7 sts = 1” with 3 mm hook.
WPI
*WPI – wraps per inch: To measure the WPI of your yarn, wrap it around
a pencil, a ruler or something else, until it reaches 1 inch. Then count the
number of wraps you have.

− I recommend beginning all rounds with an adjustable ring.

− All rounds are worked in a continuous spiral; do not join rounds with a slip stitch.
− You may find it useful to use a stitch marker for counting your rounds.

Magic Wand
When making the magic wand of your Little Witch
the sky’s the limit for your creativity!
I used a bamboo skewer and cut it at desired length.
Then I took brown yarn and knotted it with “half
hitches” (macramé) around the stick. With a big and
shiny bead at the top your wand it ready to perform
magic!
You can give your Little Witch a witches’ besom, too. ☺

Finishing
− Embroider face (e.g. mouth).

− Skirt: Take about 10 - 15 cm / 4 – 6 inches of the black cloth/lace and

sew ends together; sew it as a ruffled skirt to body. Then put some
bordure/ribbon around the waist of your Little Witch and stitch it down.

− Sew arms to body (with the wider part of sleeve facing down).

− Hair: (I recommend making the hair at the end of all your finishing
work.) Cut about 15 cm / 6 inches long pieces of yarn. To attach the
hair to the head, stick the crochet hook in one hole and out another on
the head (around a stitch). Grab the yarn with the hook and pull a small
loop of the yarn through. Keeping the hook in the loop, hook the two
sections of yarn, pull them completely through the loop and tighten the
knot. Repeat that with each hair. Then dress the hair of your Little Witch
and attach red ribbons.

− Decorate the witches’ hat, e.g. with a security pin, ribbons, beads, sequins, stars or whatever you like.

Abracadabra! Your Little Witch is finished!

If you find the time, I’d love to see a picture of
your magic Little Witch! ☺
