Young Explorers
Kings and Queens!

Dear Julie,

This week, find out if you've got what it takes to be a king or queen! Make a crown, craft a royal
seal and design your own family tree.

You can also find out about how Queen Elizabeth I showcased her power through portraits in a
short film!

Don't forget, you can email photos of what you make to youngfriends@britishmuseum.org -
you might even appear in our next email!

Have fun exploring!

Make a crown!

Crowns have been worn on top of the heads of rulers, royalty and monarchs across the world for
centuries. They typically act as a visual symbol of their power and status within the society or
kingdom.

Have a go at making your own version of a crown! We’ve gone for a more classic interpretation
here, but you could get as creative as you like!

A cylinder seal is an oblong object used for signing important tablets. The cylinder would be
rolled over wet clay to make an impression.

Have a go at making your own Mesopotamian cylinder seal!

Make a family tree

A family tree is a diagram or chart which shows family relationships. Having a record of royal
relationships was extremely important in deciding who was eligible to take the throne!
