Overview

Oracle Shipping Cloud provides the ability to pack shipment lines into packing units prior to
shipment confirmation.

The packing functionality provides support to:

• Manually pack
• Automatically pack

Manually Pack

You can pack shipment lines manually by creating packing units and specifying the lines that are
packed in each of the packing units. Packing can be done for items as well as packing units. You
can pack items into a packing unit and also pack those packing units into another packing unit.
For example, you can pack items into a box and many boxes onto a pallet.

Automatically Pack

You can choose to automatically pack shipment lines into packing units by selecting the
Automatically Pack option for the specific lines. The selected shipment lines are grouped by
shared attributes, such as the ship-to location, and are then packed based on the preferred default
packing configuration. The setup task ‘Manage Default Packing Configurations’ must be
performed in order to automatically pack shipments.

Packing Unit Setup

Packing unit setup starts with the definition of a container item in Product Information
Management. The packing unit must be modeled as an item in Product Information
Management.

Navigation: Product Information Management > Create Item

Navigate to Specifications > Physical Attributes to set the container related attributes for the
item. The attribute ‘Container’ must be set to ‘Yes’ and the Container Type selected.

The container item defined in Product Information Management will be used to populate the
packing unit type list of values displayed when creating a packing unit. So, when the container
item is setup in Product Information Management and the physical attribute is Container = Yes,
this item will be displayed as Packing Unit Type in the Manage Shipment Lines page.

In addition to completing the container attributes the container item must also be Shippable.
Ensure that the ‘Shippable’ attribute is set to ‘Yes’. Navigate to Specifications > Sales and Order
Management to set the Shippable item attribute for the item.

The values for the field ‘Container Type’ are sourced from Inventory Management lookup type
‘INV_CONTAINER_TYPE’. You can add additional values to the Container Type list of value
by navigating to the setup task ‘Manage Inventory Lookups’.

Navigation: Tools > Setup and Maintenance > Manage Inventory Lookups

When automatically packing shipment lines, you must complete the setup task ‘Manage Default
Packing Configurations’. This setup task enables you to associate the item and item quantity with
a packing unit. The configuration defined will be used when invoking automatic packing for the
shipment line.

Navigation: Tools > Setup and Maintenance > Manage Default Packing Configurations

When creating a packing unit, the user is given the option to either have the packing unit name
generated from the inventory organization parameter setup or user-defined. If you want to
generate packing unit name from the inventory organization parameter, the associated setup task
‘Manage Inventory Organization: Parameters’ must be performed.

Manual Packing Process Flow

Manual packing allows the user to manually select the packing unit to perform packing. The
action ‘Pack’ is displayed under the Actions menu on the Manage Shipment Lines page.

When performing manual packing, the user has the ability to search for an existing packing unit
or create a new packing unit. To search for an existing packing unit, enter the packing unit name
and click the search icon.

To create a new packing unit, click the ‘Create Packing Unit’ button.

When creating a new packing unit, you will select the Ship-from Organization, Packing Unit
Type, and Name Generation (Use organization parameters or User-defined).

The values for the field ‘Packing Unit Type’ are sourced from Inventory Management lookup
type ‘INV_CONTAINER_TYPE’

Navigation: Tools > Setup and Maintenance > Manage Inventory Lookups

If you select ‘Use organization parameters’ for Name Generation, you must complete the
associated setup for the Inventory Organization.

Navigation: Tools > Setup and Maintenance > Manage Inventory Organizations > Parameters

Once you have created your packing unit, click the ‘Save and Close’ button.

Now you can search for your newly created packing unit and click the button ‘Pack’ to complete
the manual packing process.

You can navigate to the Edit Shipment page to view the packing unit association with the
shipment line.
