GRIT MODULE NO. 1: Functions, Nature and Processes of
Communication

Greetings in the oneness of Heart of Jesus and Mary! Peace

and all good my dear! How’s your day? I hope it is always fine as
you always embrace the beauty of life through God’s grace and
mercy. Be silent for a while and say a little prayer. (Pray the
Prayer of Blessed Bartolo to St. Joseph.)
Today, we will go on a journey. A journey that will allow us
to see how people interact to convey their thoughts and ideas to
others. So as we go along, always remember to communicate with
me. Before we begin our journey, first, read and remember the
following standards and targets that will motivate and guide us in
completing this journey.
Learning Standard: You will understand the nature and elements
of oral communication to design and perform effective controlled
and uncontrolled oral communication activities based on context.
Compassion Standard: You will observe prudence and
circumspection in various communication situations.
Now read these learning targets. These will tell you what
specific knowledge and skills you need to master for the entire
week.
Learning Targets:
1. Explain the five functions of communication (Information,
Regulation or Control, Motivation, Social Interaction, Emotional
Expression)
2. Determine the nature and process of communication
3. Use various strategies in order to avoid communication
breakdown

Are you ready to begin the journey? Don’t worry in this
journey, you will not be alone. I will be there to guide you but of
course you have to do your part. It looks like you are so excited to
learn today. I hope your books and other learning materials are
there beside you. Nice! Let’s start!
Let us now open the first door on our journey. We can’t deny
that this pandemic brought a lot of changes to us and we can’t
control it. What we can do is to continue life and adapt on it. With
this, I know you have been missing your friends, relatives,
classmates and even your teachers and I know they do the same
too. Now, I will give you a chance to initiate a communication.
Send a personal message to the person you have been missing a
lot. Can you do it? Have you done it? Congratulations for having
the courage to initiate a communication and for making someone
happy in this time of distress.

Communication is usually defined as the process of giving

and receiving information between a human source and a
human receiver using words, symbols, or actions.

Communication is indispensable to human life. Without it, we

cannot function properly, we cannot advance as people, and we
cannot live our lives.
One of the primary ways to communicate is through oral
communication using language. We take communication for
granted because we do it so frequently, but it’s actually a complex
process. It involves at least seven elements: source/sender,
message, channel, receiver and feedback. (To learn more about these
elements, you may open your book

For you to easily understand how communication process occurs
here are the three basic types of communication models:
1. Linear Model- it is a one-directional- information process. The
speaker sends a message and the receiver serves as the
audience. There is minimal to no response from the receiver in
this model.

NOISE

SENDER MESSAGE RECEIVER

2. Interactive Model- the sender and the receiver exchanges

messages. The field of experience of both communicators affects
the communication process.

Aside from those three, here are other specific models that describe
the communication process.
1. Jacobson’s Model
2. Saussure’s Model
3. Shannon’s Model
4. Berlo’s Model

You did it! Now you are already aware how the communication
process works. Definitely it is not a “one size fits all” thing. The
way that we communicate and how we do it vary according to the
age, gender, ethnicity, status among others of the people we do it
with. Of course, we don’t do it for nothing. Communication as a
human activity always serves a function or purpose.
(To learn more about these functions, you may open your book and
refer to page 17 – 21.)

I want you to share here sample situations when you or any of your
family member has employed the functions of communication. You
are to give three situations per function.

You see, we definitely communicate for different purposes! When

we communicate with others, it

does not often go well. There are times when we are
misunderstood, misquoted, misheard, seen zoned, or “ghosted”.
These are possible effects of communication breakdown.
Communication breakdown does not mean the complete
stoppage of communication; rather it refers to the distractions or
noises in communication which affects the success of the
communication process. Communication is not totally broken, just
bent due to some internal or external factors.
Communication breakdown has four types. Come and let us study
them.
a. Physical Noise. This type of communication breakdown usually
comes from the environment. Examples of this are unbearable
weather, may be too hot or too cold, and the unnecessary noises
around you (i.e. the loud music from your neighbors).

b.Psychological Noise. This are the state of a person that

compromise his/her the ability to send or receive messages
(depression, anger, suspicious, paranoia, biases, etc.)

c. Physiological Noise. This are physical bodily conditions

(hunger, stomach ache, etc.)

d. Semantic Noise. This refers to the meaning of words that

distorts or masks a message and confuses the listener (e.g. a
speaker’s use of foreign language; a listener’s limited
vocabulary)

The success of communication process does not happen
automatically. You have to cope with these communication
breakdowns and think of ways/strategies in order to surpass them.
Now here are examples of situations that you may have
encountered before. Read and analyze them. List down the
possible communication breakdown/s that may occur in the
process. Afterwards, think of strategies that may be used to
overcome each breakdown.

We’re about to reach the final phase of this journey. Are you
learning? That’s good! Now, ask your family to join you in a
“red table” session. (A red table is a session of family members usually
conducted to talk about a topic. They gather around a table ‘specifically a
red one’ and share their idea about a topic. The mother or father usually
is the one who facilitates. Example of this are the red table sessions of
“the Smith”.(You can seat together in your living room or dinner
table.) In the first part of your session, present all your realization/s
about COVID-19. Let them listen to you. On the second part of the
session, talk about COVID-19 Vaccination. Observe how the
communication process happens.

On the first part of your session, what are the things that you used to
ensure the effectiveness of the communication process?

“The biggest communication problem is we do not listen to

different in the way we perceive the world and use this
understanding as a guide to our communication with other” (Tony
